Regarding Charlie SMITH, I am so happy to finally hear someone with a bit of information about him. His grandparents were Charles McLAIN and Pelina A. UNKNOWN ... who came from Weakley Co TN to Lawrence Co AR before the 1850 census...They are my ggg grandparents and their daughter Chrisitiana / Christeny born about 1830 TN married James SMITH b abot 1830 KY. Polina Anna / Perlina A. SMITH who married John Thomas TEWELL 1879 AR was their daughter.
Now ..all these postings have given me a bit of info about Christeny McLAIN and James SMITHs chldren, Polina Anna and brother Charlie.
Does anybody know what happened to the other SMITH siblings ....Nancy C. SMITH who married E. Wesley LINGO and sold land after the Christmas 1883 shooting to Charles McLAIN's son Squire McLAIN ...or David W. SMITH and also a brother James C. b about 1866 and John S. born about 1865?? All these kids were born in Lawrence Co / Walnut Ridge Arkansas in the 1850s or 1860s. The last evidence I have of them is the 1880 census and the land sale records of Nancy C. and spouse E. Wesley LINGO. Charlie, b about 1859 also sold land in 1884 during the trial. I presume the family were trying to raise money ...or making their plans to leave AR.
David W. SMITH might have been married to Arabella or R. Belle FRASIER / FRAZIER .....and later on perhaps his brother James married her (so did David die?) ....or do I have the right SMITHs??? All help to these riddles appreciated.
Audrey in TN

All of this checks out! Good job! I knew from Grandpa's stories that they lived in a soddy on the plains of Kansas, but I had no idea where and for how long. You just cleared up a long time question! Keep in touch and hopefully our other cousin will too!

Where were these two located in 1900? What state, county and township? Where they listed under their father, John T Smith & Anna and were there any other names listed. I have been unable to locate this family before 1910. Very interested in what you have.

On the 1900 census there is a John N, a Leaner and other names that don't seem to fit. I think it a case of being able to decipher the hand writing of the numerator that did the census, when the data was entered.

On a 1910 Census in Harper Co., Kiawa Twp., OK the following sons are located:
Therman, age 22
Constine, age 14
James M, age 28
Richard E, age 26
John A., age 19
Lee, age 16
I could find no Norris or Grover at this time, but who is this John A.? He is listed as a son. On this record it shows that John and Anna had 7 sons. Would anyone know?

This, as well as Sandra's postings made my day. I've been at this since 2000 and you all my first family link! I am Charles Thurman's grandaughter that lived in Blackwell. Grandpa used to tell a few stories about the rough Younger brothers and I wonder if this might be the grouop Red hung with. Seems like there was a story about Kaw City another horse stealing story, but I can't remember for sure. He told about living in a soddy and a gang coming by.
I would love to have a photo of greatgrandfather John. I have one of Anna, which you probably have but I will post to you. It would be fun to see family photos and share stories. My email is mljmgor(a)sbcglobal.net If you can scan your photo and email this will continue to make my day! It's been a long time in coming to make contact with you all!

John Thomas is also my great grandfather, Grover was my grandpa, 4th of the 7 sons. I could only remember Babe & Red until I saw your message, and Thurman is one of the brothers. I don't know the birth order yet but, they were Judah Grover, Charles Thurman, Norris, Richard(Dick), Otto Constantine (Babe) because he was the youngest, Lee Omar (Red)he had red hair, and your grandpa Jim. John Thomas's grandmother was Delia Ann Cissell, but I haven't figured out Lewis's relationship yet. I have only been looking for about a week, but you are the 2nd greatgrand child I have been in contact with. It seems like I knew about the name change forever but not the story behind it, I didn't learn that until about 10 years ago. The other cousin and I are trying to coordinate picture sharing, and would love to include any you may have. Please feel to contact me directly sandra.scarborough(a)yahoo.com

Sandra, I would love to know what you know about the Tewell/Smith family. My great-grandfather was John Thomas Tewell. I have a picture of him with Otto Constantine and Lee Omar, whom my dad called Uncle Babe and Uncle Red. Are these John Thomas' sons?
John Thomas died sometime after 1917, and was buried under an oak tree outside Buffalo, Oklahoma. According to our family story, Charlie Smith spent his life and traveled with John Thomas and his family, but I don't know if he married or had children. The story goes that, late in life, he wanted to clear John Thomas' name, so the family started out across northern Oklahoma toward Arkansas. Charlie became too ill to continue and died of cancer, apparently in Kaw City, Oklahoma. My grandfather is James M. Smith, son of John Thomas. He told the family that their name is actually Tewell in the mid-1950's. Some of my uncles were scandalized by the news and very embarrassed to talk about it. My dad, though, seemed to have relished the story and told it to us all my life.
James M. married Olive King from Kinsley, KS, although I have no idea how they met. I believe they lived for awhile with the rest of the Smiths in/around Buffalo, OK, and moved to Kaw City. My father, James King Smith, was born in Kaw City in 1923.
I assume Lewis Cissell was a relative/inlaw of John Thomas? My understanding of the Tewell family is one of hard-working, hard-drinking fellows, and the shooting was just a matter of time. Does anyone know about this aspect of their life?
He said Uncle Babe or Uncle Red was a professional gambler, ran with the eastern Oklahoma outlaws and was shot dead. He also gambled often in Whizbang, the red-light district 5 miles south of Webb City, OK, in the Burbank field. One night, he won $3,000 in a saloon there but lost it when he was rolled and beaten upon leaving the saloon. Lends credence to the lifestyle story.
My dad also talked of Uncle Grover and Uncle Thurman. Not sure who they were.
