Your Delia CISSELL was mother to John Thomas TEWELL who married a Perlina Anna / Polina Anna SMITH 1879 in Lawrence County AR. Perlina / Polina was the daughter of Christeny / Christiana McLAIN SMITH b about 1830 Weakley Co TN and James SMITH b about 1830 KY. Christiana McLAIN was a daughter of my ggg grandparents, Charles McLAIN b about 1809 IL or TN and Perlina A. UNKNOWN b about 1811 TN. They left Weakley Co TN and came to Lawrence County Arkansas near Walnut Ridge before the 1850 census and were in Strawberry township 1850.
This line has intrigued me for awhile as it ties in with my McLAIN line that was in Adair Co KY (and probably Hardin Co for sure), in IL for awhile, and in Warren Co TN, as well as Henry and Weakley Co TN ...came out of VA to the Carolinas. One reason it intrigues me is that the above Charles McLAIN who is my ggg grandfather, had a son (brother to Christiana) named John Henry McLAIN b about 1835-37 Weakley co TN, married 1857 Lawrence Co AR to Sarah Catherine AGEE b about 1842 TN (EAst TN) ...and their son William David McLAIN b 1859 Lawrence Co AR is my great grandfather.
William David McLAIN was married twice. His 1st wife was Cordelia MOSIER for Loogootee, Daviess Co, Indiana. There is a bio on him that says he moved there for awhile to learn the lumber / sawmill industry, moved there before he 'had reached his majority' ...and brought Cordelia home to Lawrence Co AR. They married October 1878 in AR. William David's grandfather was Charles McLAIN ...just as Polina Anna SMITH was granddaughter to Charles McLAIN ..and she and John Thomas TEWELL from the same area of Indiana (Martin Co) married 5 months later in 1879.
My question has long been: Did the McLAINs and the MOSIERs, TEWELLs and CISSELLs have some long knowledge of each other ...perhaps in Kentucky?
Then there is this story. Back to John Thomas TEWELL and wife Polina Anna SMITH. Dec. 23, 1883 in Lawrence County AR at a dance, Lewis CISSELL apparently pulled a gun on TEWELL in an argument over a horse and Polina Anna's brother Charley A. SMITH jumped to his defense and shot to death Lewis CISSELL.
The story goes that Charley was always in trouble and the family feared for his life, so TEWELL took the blame (maybe thought self defense would save him) ..but he was tried and convicted and sentenced to 15 years in prison. (I have some of the court records, either sent to me by Lucy Gordon, and/or I found some myself in Walnut Ridge, AR). Feeling quite responsible apparently, Charley and the SMITH brothers (so goes the story told to me) busted TEWELL out of jail before he could be moved to prison in Little Rock and they all went on the run for the rest of their lives.
Lucy Gordon told me this story and sent me some records, but I also went to Lawrence Co AR and found some of the court records. Polina Anna died in Kaw OK, but she and John Thomas TEWELL used the SMITH surname while on the run. It was her son, before he died many years later, that told his children the story as he knew it ...and that their family name was really TEWELL, not SMITH.
Soooo, to my knowledge I do not have a blood connection to the CISSELLs or TEWELLs, but I do to Polina Anna SMITH who married John Thomas TEWELL.
I think that knowing where the TEWELLs, CISSELLs and MOSIERs lived and migrated may be of some help in pinning down my McLAIN / McCLAIN, McLANE ..by any spelling ...line.
Interested in hearing from anybody researching the CISSELLs, TEWELLs, etc. ...and also T.J. SHARUM (also from Martin IN, mother was Rosa CISSELL, sister to Delia Ann CISSELL, and I do have HARMON marriage also ...2nd wife to above mentioned Charles McLAIN. Sarah HARMON FRY RILEY married 1866 to Charles McLAIN in AR (daughter of Phillip and Catherine who left northeastern TN and went to MO, and I have some research on the HARMON and FRY lines, but nothing to be found on her brief RILEY marriage)......so also interested in anybody with info relating to HARMON, etc.
