Marilyn - William Cissell's father is said to be John Baptist Cissell. The William Cissell that died in Daviess Co., IN in 1846 was b. ca. 1765 so we can exclude John Cissell b. 1790 as a possible father of William. William's father would have had to been b. ca. 1745 or earlier.

Do you know who this William belonged to and did he have a son named William who Thomas Cissell b. 1790/1793 served as administrator to his estate? I did not know there was a William who died in Daviess Co., Ind. in 1846...Do you know the names of his children...Please Reply: Claw(a)charter.net

No, Sir Robert Cecil was not exiled. One book that might be of interest for information on the family is "The Cecils of Hatfield House" by David Cecil. Published by Houghton Mifflin Co., Boston 1973, ISBN 0-395-17120-2.

There are several connections in this line between the Cissell and
Edelen (the preferred spelling) families. Joseph Edelen (son of Edward
Edelen and Susannah Wathen) married his first cousin Catherine Wathen
(daughter of John Barton Wathen and Mary ___). They were originally from
Charles Co. (and other counties), MD, but were living in Nelson Co., KY, by
the 1810 census. They settled on Pottinger's Creek near the New Church of
the Holy Cross. Joseph Edelen died in Nelson Co., as his will was probated
there on April 13, 1840. Catherine survived him and died soon before May
8, 1841, when her death was recorded at age 77 in the Catholic Advocate,
making her birth year 1764. Joseph Edelen was 70-80 in the 1830 census, so
his decade of birth was 1750-1760.
Among their several children were Louis Edelen, born MD Feb. 6,
1793, who married Dorothy Cissell; Leonard, born 1789, who married Janet
Cissell; and Elizabeth who married James S. Cissell. Both Dorothy and
Janet were daughters of John Cissell and Susannah Thompson. Their birth
and baptism records survive from St. Mary's Co., MD. This John Cissell
bought land in Nelson Co., KY, on Pottinger's Creek in 1796, and died there
in 1835, his land being appraised on Oct. 26, 1835. John was the son of
John and Henrietta Cissell and the grandson of Arthur and Mary Cissell.

I think it's likely James & Elizabeth Cissell who appear in the 1870 Martin Co., IN census are in fact James S. Cissell & Zelpha Robbins. Zelpha is likely a middle name or nickname.
I think the 1870 census is in error by showing James being b. in IN ca. 1790. The earliest births in Martin & Daviess Co., IN occurred around 1815-20 when the migration from Washington & Nelson Co., KY started.
A James L. Cissell appears in Nelson Co., KY on the 1820 census (pg. 164). James is residing next to Lewis Edelin. A Joseph Edelin also appears on page 164. My guess is this is the same James S. Cissell that moved to Daviess Co., IN between 1830 and 1832. The letters "S" and "L" often looked alike on the early census records.
I have the following as either confirmed or possible/ probable children of James S. Cissell and Elizabeth Edelin:
- James Ambrose - b. ca. 1819 in KY. m. Lucinda A. Shircliff 5/28/1840.
- Delia Ann - b. ca. 1821 in KY. m. Richard Tewell in DCI 1/6/1840.

- Joseph Able - b. ca. 1835 in IN. m. Anna Maria Bellwood in DCI 11/27/1855.
- James G. - b. 4/20/1844 in Daviess Co., IN. (his mother was Martha Dinkins).
The two most likely to not be children or James S. Cissell (in my mind) are Minerva who is said to have been b. in IL in 1826 and Mary A. who is said to have been b. in IN in 1829.
Do you know if any of the above possible children of James S. Cissell should be assigned to other Cissell's such as Thomas Cissell b. ca. 1790, William Cissell b. ca. 1765 or Ignatius Cissell b. ca. 1764?
Do you now if there were any ties between James S. Cissell and the other early Cissell families from Martin & Daviess Co such as the previously mentioned Thomas, William and Ignatius?

Hello,
Early this week I learned that an aunt married a Sissel. This is how the name is spelled in the Civil War papers dated 1895.
My great grandfather is listing his living siblings. He states that Annie is married to Thomas Sissel and that they resided in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
My Fery family came to the US in 1847 and settled in Wisconsin. Annie was born to Claude and Agnes (Lotter) in about 1837 in France/Germany, depending on the year and the boarder changes.
I have been searching the census records and I have figured out pretty quickly that there are several spellings of the name Sissel.
In 1860 I found a Thomas Ciscel family in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Thomas was born in about 1825 in London, England. He is married to Annie, and they have a son, John. born in 1859, Nothing for 1870, but I found them again in 1880 with the children of John, Mary, Joseph, Agnes and Flora, still in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. I have noticed that my Fery family named their children after family members. Her mother was Agnes and she had a brother named Joseph.
I was hoping to find a family connection somewhere and learn about my aunt and share her family with others.
Thank you very much for your time,
Blessings,
Deborah

Hi,
Reading some Civil War paper work from my great grandfather, I learned that an aunt was married to a Thomas Sissel. I have noticed many spellings of the name and I am having a hard time finding any info. Her name is Annie Fery, born in 1837 in Gernany/France (the boarder kept changing); came to America in 1847, settling in Wisconcin. Her parents are Claude and Agnes (Lotter) Fery.
I found a Thomas Ciscel family living in Wisconcin in 1860, with a son named John, born in 1859, Cannot find anything for 1870. Found the family again in 1880, still in Wisconsin with the children John, Mary, Joseph, Agnes and Flora.
On the LDS site I found the parents names of Anges as Thomas Cisell and Annie Fany. I am thinking that the it is Fery and that is was transcribed incorrectly.
I found a death date for Thomas as June 11, 1892 and for John November 27, 1906, both in Wisconsin.
The Civil War papers are dated June 25, 1895 and state that Annie was in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
Thanks so much for your help with this line.
Blessings,
Debbie
