Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
I don't normally send advertisements to this list, however I decided that
this was such an important message that it was worth taking the change of
sending it out to everyone I knew.
The Genealogy program that have been using for the past 4 years and
currently use (Family Origins version 10) is being discontinued and is
reportedly being replaced by the developer as a new program called : RootsMagic
Recently there was an email blasted out from the makers of "Family Tree
Maker" to all old registered users of "Family Origins" version 7 or 8
telling them that there was no alternative but to upgrade to Family Tree
Maker.
There is still hope and within the next few weeks a new genealogy program
called "RootsMagic" will be available directly from the developer (from a
company called Formalsoft) who designed and wrote the past 10 version of
"Family Origins". It is reportedly being re-written so that he can take
back the control and distribution rights to his software.
The new RootsMagic software is reported to be able to run successfully
under Windows 95, 98, ME, NT, 2000, and XP.

Although RootsMagic is scheduled to ship in late January, Formalsoft is
offering it for those who want to order it early (for yourself or a
friend). It is available at the introductory price of $19.95 plus
shipping/handling (the price of RootsMagic will be $34.95 after February
28th, 2003).

Subject: [FO] A favor, and thanks
I received an email from Genealogy.com (directed to registered Family
Origins
users) stating that their support for Family Origins will end June 30,
2003
(they already list Family Origins as discontinued on their website).
They then continue by asking the Family Origins user to switch over to
Family
Tree Maker.
We (FormalSoft) cannot do the same thing with RootsMagic (even though
we
wrote Family Origins), since we do not have access to the list of
registered
Family Origins users (which was passed from Parsons Technology to
Genealogy.com).
So I am asking a favor <enter grovel mode>...
If you ever recommended Family Origins to a friend or relative, or if
you
know someone else who is using Family Origins (like in a genealogy
society or
club), we would be grateful if you would mention to them that the
Family
Origins developers have written a new program called RootsMagic, and
that
they might want to take a look at it before switching to another
program. <

And finally, I would like to express my personal appreciation for all
the
great Family Origins users who have been so loyal and made it such a
pleasure
working on Family Origins these past 12 years (over a quarter of my
life). I
don't know most of you personally, but the contact we have had over the
years
on this list and through emails make me feel like I do.
But be assured, we aren't going anywhere. We will strive to make
RootsMagic
every bit as friendly and powerful as Family Origins (and more).
