Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
I enjoyed your blog. I didn't know so many CW books were available. Since
I am also from the Plymouth, MA Churchills, I would be interested to know
which of them joined the 18th. I didn't think I had ancestors in the CW but
perhaps I do. Thanks Priscilla

Bill -
Thanks for jumpstarting the forum with your question - it is great to see
some new emails coming in.
I have taken a break from the Plymouth Branch and have been working on my
other hobby - The Civil War. Several members of the Plymouth Branch served
in the 18th Massachusetts and I have been working with two other researchers
to write a history of the regiment.
Because we keep finding new information, we ended up writing a book on how
to research the Civil War (The Civil War Research Guide - Stackpole Books)
and now write an (almost) daily blog on the Civil War and researching it. If
interested, you can read it at www.18thmass.com/blog .
Of course, I'll probably get bored and come back to the research of the
Churchill Family soon - then you can expect some more emails!
Tom

Hi Bill,
I know that - Arthur is a descendant of Joseph and Mary Churchill who immigrated from England and settled in Ohio early to mid 1800's. My post was in response to a prior post looking for information on the family of Arthur. It has been good to see so much activity on this list the past few days.
Marcia Briggs

Marcia,
Neither CFA nor the Churchill Common Database has an Arthur with that
birth date.
Sorry
Bill

Elaine,
Calvin doesn't seem to have had a surviving son from his first marriage.
Apparently you have other information. Who was the son?
Sorry no information in CFA on Francis Marion Churchill save that below.
You could ask Don Churchill (the ggrandson of Asaph) if any notes
survive but I would doubt it. The CFA Index Number "591h" indicates (as
the text reads) that Francis Marion was Calvin's 8th child. The "They
live in Missouri" with regard to Francis Marion would probably mean the
authors knew they were living in Missouri in the late 19th or very early
20th Century when the book was finally published.

Response to Bill Churchill:
I'm looking for Calvin Webster Churchill married to 2nd wife Johanna
Rafferty Churchill. They lived in Hamilton County, Nebraska from
the 1880's to their deaths. He died Dec 1898 she died May 1899.
Actually, I've found them there but don't have a lead on their
children. I would like to find living descendents of Calvin's son
from first marriage, a Frank or Francis Churchill. He may have moved
to Kansas before 1912. I believe he owned a drayage business and may
have been in or near Treece, Kansas. I would also like to find
living descendents from the marriage to Johanna - there were 3 or 4
children I believe.
Is anyone familiar with these names?

This message is for Faye Leonard:
You will find the informaton you're seeking in the book "The
Churchill Family in America," compiled by Gardner Asaph Churchill and
Nathaniel Wiley Churchill published about 1904. There is also a book
titled "Genealogy and Biography of the Connecticut Branch of the
Churchill Family in America." In this second book, Eliza is listed as
Sgt. Joseph's child married to Richard Butler. I have copies of some
pages of each book going back to the immigrant ancestor, Josiah,
father of Joseph (1649). She is also mentioned in "Genealogies and
Biographies of Ancient Wethersfield" by Henry R. Stiles published
about 1904 I think. ( I don't read Roman numerals well.) Reprints
of both Curchill books and possibly Wethersfield book may be
available from Higginson's Books - do a google search.
In the meantime, if you want me to copy what I have, please send an
e-mail to erietz(a)comcast.net. There aren't too many pages so I won't
charge you for them
I hope this is helpful.

Response to Bill Churchill:
I'm looking for Calvin Webster Churchill married to 2nd wife Johanna
Rafferty Churchill .

Do any of you American Churchills descend from William Henry and his family
in Fitchburg MA yet? He had at least 6 children from 1873 - 1887 in the
Quebec area of Canada before emigrating to MA in the 1880s/early 1890s. His
sister Jessie Golby also emigrated to Fitchburg with her 2 Hutchings
children from a former marriage.
Anyone recognise the name Charles Frederick Churchill b 1881 Canada, known
as CFC, and his wife Jennie who lived in Schenectady, NY ca 1920-30 and he
poss died in Florida, or his daughter Ruth who married a Mr
Jurlinden/Gurlinden or similar in the 1940s or poss 50s? We have photos here
in England of this family.......sent by American relatives.

You can also get a CD of "The Churchill Family in America" from Richard
Bingham:
40 Seneca Place
Oceanport, NJ 07757
732-571-0552
HYPERLINK mailto: bingham(a)monmouth.com
I've got the Book and the CD. I've got no interest in the CD but an
advantage of the CD is that one can open a volume in Word, then use FIND
to quickly go to individuals by searching for their given and surnames.
The CD was apparently made by using an automated text recognition
program. I have discovered a few small typos in the CD text but nothing
significant. Word's spell checker picks them out and corrects them.

Faye, the genealogy of the family is in the book THE CHURCHILL FAMILY IN
AMERICA by Gardner Asaph Churchill and Nathaniel Wiley Churchill. The
original publication is long out-of-print but is probably in larger
collections around the country.
In any event it was reprinted by Heritage Books out of Bowie, MD. You
can
check on bookfinder.com for used editions of either the original or
reprint
if you want your own copy. The reprint was in two volumes in paperback
and
you line is in the second volume (pp.323-327, for your first two
generations) which concerns the "Connecticut Branch" or the "Descendants
of
Josiah Churchill of Wethersfield". Your Joseph is the son of the above
Josiah & Elizabeth FOOTE. In the book Joseph's wife Mary's surname had
not
been identified at the time the book was written.
Of course, if you don't want a copy of your own try inter-library loan
or
see it is available through your local Family History Center.
Good luck, Jim.

Bill -
Thanks for jumpstarting the forum with your question - it is great to see
some new emails coming in.
Tom

I have a Sgt Joseph Churchill born about 1649 married to a Mary Catlin of
Wethersfield, CT.
They had a daughter Eliza born about 1676. Later she married Richard Butler.
I am from the Butler line.
Does anyone have more on the Connecticut line of Churchills that might fit
these people?

Judy,
Don't know if I can help you there, the only Erasmus I know about is
Erasmus Darwin born in Mayfield, NY 7 Nov 1815. He was of the
Connecticut line and the son of Roswell6, Amos5, Nathaniel4, Nathaniel3,
Joseph2, Josiah.
If you know any living males of Erasmus' line using surname Churchill
steer them toward the Y-DNA Geneses Project. We would certainly like a
swab from them.

Bill Churchill
