This is a status of our Churchill Y-DNA Genesis Project. The purpose of
the project is to help Churchills looking for their roots determine
their families of origin through Y-DNA testing and analysis. If you are
interested in the project or have questions about Y-DNA testing contact
me off-list.
Presently the project is working to determine the origin of the American
Colonial Connecticut, Plymouth and Manhattan Churchill families. The
American progenitors of these families arrived in America in the 17th
Century but, except for the Virginia family, the English identity of
their progenitors is unknown.
Currently 8 individuals have completed testing and we have DNA results.
The individuals who tested were:
Of the ancient English family of Oxfordshire Churchills;
Of the Colonial American Virginia Churchills;
Of the Colonial American Connecticut Churchills, and
Of the Colonial American Plymouth Churchills.
Two men from the American Colonial Manhattan Churchills are in the
process of testing but we do not have results.
TEST RESULTS ARE:
The results show that the English Oxfordshire Churchills match the
American Virginia candidates verifying that the Virginia Churchills were
Oxfordshire descendants. There is no match to the Connecticut or
Plymouth Churchills.
The test determined that the Oxfordshire and Virginia Churchills belong
to Haplogroup R1b. Haplogroup R1b is the most common Haplogroup in
European populations. It is believed to have expanded throughout Europe
as humans re-colonized after the last glacial maximum 10-12 thousand
years ago.
A second finding is that the American Plymouth and Connecticut
Churchills are closely related. Y-DNA results indicate a common
ancestor. John and Josiah were not brothers but they were cousins.
The Plymouth and Connecticut Churchills are in Haplogroup I1a.
Haplogroup I1a lineages are almost completely restricted to northwestern
Europe and are most common within Viking populations. One lineage of
this group extends down into central Europe.
Our next milestone will be receipt of the American Manhattan Churchill
test results. It will be interesting to learn if they match either the
Oxfordshire or the Connecticut/Plymouth results.
We are now looking for English Churchills to test who either know or
think they are of the ancient English Devon Churchill family. If anyone
can help in that regard please contact me. We need Churchills who have
ancient English pedigrees or are of the ancient Devon family. Again,
please contact me or have the individuals contact me.
Finally, if you know of ANY Churchills who are looking for their roots,
please tell them about our Y-DNA Project. We may be of help. The
purpose of this project is to help individuals find their families of
origin.
Best Regards,
Bill Churchill
