The date of death is recorded just as I transcribed it, with only a day and
year recorded. Looking at other entries from the same time frame, it would
appear that the clerk omitted stating the month if it was the same as the
month of birth; thus, Samuel, b 9 Jan 1753, son of Barnabas and Lydia
(Holmes) Churchill deceased 31 [Jan] 1753. There is no mistaking that this
date of death applies to Samuel, son of Barnabas and Lydia Churchill. It is
included with his record of birth in the listing of the children of
Barnabas and Lydia (Holmes) Churchill in Plymouth VR.
I believe Elizabeth Totman is Betty, b 9 Jan 1756 Plymouth, dau. of Joshua
and Joanna (Scarrett) Totman; Sarah Thomas was b 18 Jan 1752 Plymouth, dau.
of John Thomas Jr. and Abigail, his wife.
In the Ancient Landmarks of Plymouth, Part 2, Genealogical Register, this
Samuel is listed but not referenced to a father. He is listed twice, once
for the marriage to Sarah Thomas and again for the marriage to Elizabeth
Totman.
I was aware of this Samuel Churchill and his wife Elizabeth because some
researchers have incorrctly assigned their dates of death to Samuel
Churchill b 10 July 1754 Plymouth, son of Josiah and Patience (Harlow)
Churchill, and his wife, Elizabeth Churchill b 3 Jun, 1722 Plymouth, dau.
of Amaziah and Elizabeth (Sylvester) Churchill. The dates of death for this
Samuel and wife Elizabeth are unknown. This is the line from which I
descend.
I found 3 Samuel Churchills recorded in the Plymouth VR with birth dates in
the 1750-1760 range:
son of Jonathan and Hannah b 15 Jan 1749/50, d 20 May 1753; son of Barnabas
and Lydia (Holmes) b 9 Jan 1753, d 31 Jan 1753; son of Josiah and Patience
b 10 July 1754 and mar. Elizabeth Churchill 1776.
The births of the children of Samuel (of Josiah) and Elizabeth are recorded
in the Plymouth VR and their youngest child, Henry, was b 29 July 1790,
after the recorded marriage of the Samuel in question to Sarah Thomas in
1784. In fact, Samuel and Elizabeth had a son Mendall b 13 April 1786, two
months before the birth and death of the unnamed son of Samuel and Sarah
(Thomas).
This leaves the question: Who was the Samuel Churchill b cal. 1753, d 15
Dec 1810, who mar. (1) Sarah Thomas 1784 and (2) Elizabeth Totman 1798?

Marcia,
I checked the Burial Hill records based upon your message and found that
there are three graves side beside as follows:
Burial Hill, No. 1705
Low, blue slate. fair condition. Symbol.
"In memory of Mrs. Sarah Churchill wife of Mr. Samuel Churchill who died
Jun 26, 1791 in ye 40 year of her age. Also in memory of their infant
son who was born June 5th, 1786, died the same day.
Grave Stone No. 1706
[Blue slate. Good condition. Urn.]
In memory of Mr. Samuel Churchill who died Dec. 15, 1810, aged 57 years.
He was a good neighbor a kind husband a tender parent.
Note that this stone is next to Sarah his first wife.
No. 1707
[Blue slate. Good condition. Urn.]
Elizabeth widow of Samuel Churchill died July 7th, 1839, in the 83rd
year of her age.
Note that the last two had urns.
Sarah's date of death (Jun 26, 1791) agrees with CFA's 1791. Her 40
year age would make her birth year 1751. She was apparently age 33 upon
her marriage.
Samuel's age at death from his grave stone agrees with his birth date of
Jan. 9, 1753 given by CFA.
Elizabeth, Samuel's widow's 1839 year of death agrees with CFA's 1839
date.
I was hoping that Elizabeth's birth year of 1756 (which calculates from
her grave stone information) agreed with the birth year for the Plymouth
John Totman's daughter Elizabeth (1764) but, alas, it is off 8 years in
the wrong direction. I know of only one other Totman family and they
had no daughter Elizabeth.
I note that the grave stones use the honorifics Mrs. and Mr. for Sarah
and Samuel. In the English culture of the day, the use of these
honorifics indicate that Samuel was fairly well off. Too bad we don't
know more about him. Their ages at marriage also supports Samuel being
well established at that time. In English culture of that day Mr. and
Mrs. would suggest Gentleman class which was as high as commoners went.

Subject: Samuel Churchill b 9 Jan 1753
While researching some information on my Plymouth Churchills, I found
some conflicting information. Plymouth Vital Records (vanAntwerp and
Sherman p140) shows Samuel Churchill, son of Barnabas Jr. and wife,
Lydia Holmes, b 9 Jan 1753 and deceased 31, 1753; CFA states this same
Samuel mar. (1) Sarah unknown and (2) Elizabeth unknown; Plymouth Vital
Records has two intentions/marriages for a Samuel Churchill Jr. #1
intention 27 Mar 1784 to Sarah Thomas, and #2 intentions 2 Sept 1798 to
Elizabeth Totman. There is a burial recorded in Inscriptions from
Burial Hill for a Sarah Churchill, wife of Samuel, died 26 June 1791 in
40th year. Also their son who was born and died 15 June 1786. Does
anyone have any further information on this Samuel Churchill, son of
Barnabas and Lydia? Only one source can be correct-did this Samuel die
the same year he was born or did he live to adulthood and marry? If he
did in 1753, who is the Samuel Churchill Jr. who appears to have married
(1) Sarah Thomas and (2) Elizabeth Totman.
