A couple of bits of trivia that may be of interest to Plymouth
Churchills -- or maybe not:
FIRST TRIVIA ITEM:
The CHURCHEL BIBLE -
The American Bartlett family has in their possession (last known to be
owned by Harry Owen Bartlett of Chicago, Ill.) a 1597 Bible which was
purchased by Joseph Bartlett of Plymouth in 1681.
In this Bible the following is written in script preceding the Gospel
according to St. Matthew:
"Plymouth"
" Brought by John Churchel"
Following this in Joseph Bartlett's hand is written:
"Joseph Bartlett his Book Bought by him in the yeare: 1681: it coft him
too pound Good lawfull monny of New England."
The Bible was examined in 1962 by Mr. Stanley Pargellis of the Newberry
Library, Chicago who made the following statement:
"The 1597 Bible which you kindly brought in some time ago for me to see
is apparently a late addition of the so-called 'Geneva Bible' which was
the first English Bible to be printed in Roman type and with verse
divisions. Your edition was Englished by L. Tompson from the Greek by
Theod. Beza with annotations by O. Loseler Villerius. It was imprinted
at London by the deputies of Christopher Barker in 1597. Tomson's
revisions first appeared in 1596."
The piece of information here that may be of interest to Plymouth
Churchills is that the initial Bible inscription is written in script:
"Plymouth"
" Brought by John Churchel"
This may indicate that John Churchill of Plymouth could write.
Background: While we know that Eliezer and John, Jr. wrote script (and
that Mary and (probably) Hannah wrote in cursive printing), we have no
evidence that John, Sr. could write. He did have books in his
possession which suggests he could read but having books would not
necessarily mean he could write. The only document we have for him is
the Memorandum of Agreement with Richard Higgins for his initial free
holding as found in the Plymouth Towne Booke. Unfortunately, this was
the Clerks copy and was not signed by John Churchill. Thus, there has
been no proof that John could write.
The Bible inscription above only suggests that John Churchill could
write. One cant say who actually wrote the inscription.
SECOND TRIVIA ITEM:
Recently on the MAPLYMOU List there has been a discussion on Puritanism
in early Plymouth and Massachusetts Bay. The discussion mentioned a
fact about the Geneva Bible that may identify John Churchill of Plymouth
as a Church of England separatist. Although, here again one cant be
certain that having the Geneva version identifies him as a separatist.
On the MAPLYMOU List, the Rev. Dr. Douglas K. Showalter, in connection
with a discussion as to the categorization of early Plymouth Colony
settlers as Separatists or as Separatist Puritans, made the following
statement:
"Here's a thing that might be found of interest. The Bible brought over
from England by Rev. John Lothrop, who ultimately settled in that part
of Plymouth Colony known as Barnstable and served a church there, was
NOT the Geneva Bible, so loved by the Separatist Pilgrims--but rather
one of the versions which was much closer to the Church of England. I
examined Lothrop's Bible which is now housed at the Sturgis Library in
Barnstable. It is a 1606 printing of the so-called Bishop's Bible
translation. That suggests to me that there were some variations of view
regarding the Anglican Church, even in early Plymouth Colony.
I though I would circulate these items in case they are of interest to
someone.

Does anyone have any information on the following Plymouth County
Churchills?
1880 census, Abington, Plymouth County, MA
Samuel A. Churchill,39, b MA, parents b MA, no occ. listed
wife, Sarah A. Churchill, age 34, b MA, parents b England
son, Edward T. Churchill,age 9, b MA, parents b MA
Jacob and Maria (Mosier)Churchill had a son named Avery b cal 1842. He was
listed with them in the 1850 census, age 8 (N. Bridgewater). He is not
listed with the family in the 1855 MA census. In 1860, he is living as a
boarder in N. Bridgewater, age 18. I have not been able to locate him in
the 1870 or 1880 census. In 1880, the Samuel A. Churchill listed above, is
living in Abington next door to Maria (Mosier) Churchill. I would like to
find out if Avery and Samuel A. are the same person. I have a photocopy of
some notes from Asaph Churchill (the son), listing a son named Samuel, not
Avery, for Jacob and Marie but there is no indication of the source of this
information. I am hoping someone has some information on this Samuel A. in
their database.
Thank you for any help with this family,
Marcia B.

I've "rescued" an old bible dated 1857 which originally belonged to the
ELDER Family of Illinois. The bible contains the following:
Marriage Records:
· Charles S. ELDER Sr. and Mary E. MARTIN, married 2 Sept 1856, by the Rev.
E. P. INGERSOLL
Birth Records:
· Charles Stuart ELDER Sr., b. 7 May 1835
· Mary Elvira MARTIN, b. 14 Sept 1835
· Lora Martin ELDER, b. 10 Aug 1857
· Henry Rossiter ELDER, b. 26 July 1858
· Josephine ELDER, b. 17 July 1859
· Edgar Burnham ELDER, b. 2 Feb 1861
· Lucy ELDER, b. 20 Oct 1863
· William Augustus ELDER, b. 13 Mar 1865
· Lottie ELDER, b. 3 Feb 1869
· Grace ELDER, b. 23 Jan 1870

· Charles Stuart ELDER Jr., d. 30 May 1886
· Mary Elvira ELDER, d. 17 July 1889
· Charles Stuart ELDER Sr., 12 Apr 1911
Additional Items:
· Funeral Notice for Mrs. Ruth L. MARTIN d. 26 Feb 1866 at Middleport, IL,
age 62 years and 7
months, the widow of the late Colonel Porter MARTIN of Martinton, son
James P. MARTIN of Middleport, son-in-law Mr. STEARNS of Martinton,
previously lived in Williamstown, VT
· Dried field flowers
· Library Book card referencing a 1750 cookbook
· Funeral Notice for Mr. Henry FERRE, 24 Jan 1855
· Handwritten poem Heaven help the Sons of Liberty
Based on limited research I believe that Charles Stuart ELDER was born in
Waterloo, New York to parents Augustus ELDER and Lydia STUART. He and Mary
Elvira MARTIN were married in Bloomington, Ohio and were living in
Lexington, IL during the 1880 census with 5 of their children and Mary's
Mother Catharine A. MARTIN. Charles was living at Chenoa, IL when he died
in 1911.
It appears that the older children were probably born at Bloomington, IL and
the younger kids at Chenoa, IL. Lora Martin ELDER married Charles Fordyce
CHURCHILL on 19 Oct 1876 and appears in the 1880 census living in Chenoa, IL
with her husband and 2 year old daughter Lena L. CHURCHILL. Grace ELDER
married Harry Carlton THOMPSON on 31 Oct 1894 at Chenoa, IL and d. 15 Nov
1953 in Wichita, Kansas.
Not sure how Ruth & Porter MARTIN mentioned in the funeral notice are
related to Mary E. MARTIN (possibly and Aunt & Uncle), however, I find
Porter MARTIN b. 14 Feb 1799 at Williamstown, Vermont the son of James
MARTIN and Martha COBURN, married to Ruth A. LADD on 14 Apr 1828. Porter
MARTIN died 27 Apr 1865. Ruth A. LADD was b. in 1802 in Tunbridge, VT to
parents Anson LADD and Ruth MOULTON.
The bible is in poor physical condition, however, I'm hoping to locate
someone from the family so that this wonderful old treasure can be returned
to family. If you are a member of this family or know someone who might be,
please contact me.
Thanks,
Shelley
