All,
For information:
While John Churchill of Ottery Saint Mary remains the best candidate for
John Churchill of the Plymouth Colony be advised that a detailed search
of all parishes contiguous to Ottery Saint Mary for the period of 1638
to 1643 conducted by a Devon Research Agent and using surviving parish
registers is now complete and has not recovered burial records for
either Mary (Balaman) Churchill, Isote the daughter or John the son.
Unfortunately, in the critical time period there are gaps in parish
records for several of the parishes. In particular the records for
Whimple, Mary’s home parish, are lost.
I have determined that the bark Blessing (Blessing of the Bay) made runs
between Devon and the Plymouth Colony in 1639/40 and in 1640/41. I have
not found passenger lists. Plymouth records say that William Hill was
the Master for the 1639 transit. Devon records say that Richard Martin,
the brother of Robert Martin (later of Rehoboth), was the Master of the
ship for the transit of the initial Martin party to Plymouth. Thus, I
conclude that the Martin party which settled in Rehoboth, Plymouth
Colony (now Rehoboth, MA) may have been (likely was?) on the 1640/41
passage.
