Bill,
Thank you for the link and the information.
I am a Churchill researcher who, for a number of years, has been working
the who was John1 Churchill of Plymouth question. So far 8 of 10
possible English candidates for John1 of Plymouth have been researched
in detail and eliminated. My reason for asking about your Robert1
Bartlett has to do with information recently learned in connection with
a Devon candidate for John1 Churchill of Plymouth.
So far our most promising candidate for John1 Churchill was born in
Ottery Saint Mary parish, Devon. It turns out that in the early to late
17th century, Ottery Saint Mary was a hotbed of non-conformist
separatist activity. Non-conformists in this area were of the type
later to become Congregationalists.
The John1 Churchill of Plymouth candidate was related to the Ottery
Saint Mary Robert1 Martin who removed to the American Plymouth Colony
and settled at Rehoboth, Plymouth Colony, circa 1640. It happens that
these Churchills were also related to Bartletts through marriage;
although, I have not mapped the Bartlett families and am uncertain of
the exact relationships.
Upon learning this, it occurred to me that the "Bartlett Bible" bought
in 1681 by Joseph2 Bartlett could imply a Bartlett-Churchill family
relationship. Last week a Devon researcher identified a Robert Bartlett
of this grouping that, I believe, is the right age to be your Robert1
Bartlett:
From Branscombe parish register:
Bapt; 1595; Bartlet, Robert, s. of John Bartlet; 24 Sep
Again I have no knowledge of the Bartlett families, thus my posting to
the Bartlett List. I was told by an English researcher that some of
these Bartletts were probably of the right flavor of nonconformist to be
Plymouth settlers.
Has anyone ever considered Devon Bartletts in the search for Robert1
Bartlett of Plymouth?
Again, thank you for your reply.
Regards,
Bill Churchill

Colony?
Bill,
The likelihood of a connection between Robert Bartlett of the Ann and
one Robert Bartlett, baptized in 1603 in Puddletown, UK, has changed in
recent years from "possible" to "probable". But there is still no
definitive proof that the two are one and the same. So, as is the case
for your John Churchill (Churchel), the matter remains in question. A
short description of the problem may be found at
