Mark,
I have a rather extensive listing of English Churchill families for the 17th
century. In 10 plus years of English research I have never found an English
record for any 17th century Josiah Churchill (or Churchell).
It is possible that Josiah Churchill of Weathersfield's birth name was not
Josiah -- but in my view this is not likely. It is possible that his
baptism record was lost. What is more likely in my view is that he was a
second generation non-conformist separatist. This being the case there
would have been no record of his baptism. (The English did not keep birth
records in the 17th century and only the Anglican and Catholic churches kept
baptism records. To my knowledge no separatist groups in this period kept
name records since such records would have been dangerous.)
There could be English will, probate or court records that mention Josiah
but no such mentions have been found to my knowledge. Of course he would
only have been mentioned in a will or probate if his father (or the relative
that mentioned him) held property. There were many English Churchills in
this period who were copy holders (did not hold property). It is quite
possible his English forebearers were of this class and, if they were, it is
not likely Josiah will ever be identified through will or probate records.
But if I were looking for Josiah I would certainly search will and probate
records.
If he was a separatist it is possible that he is mentioned in English court
records. (The separatists were Anabaptists and that was illegal.) But I
have never run across an English court record that mentions him -- also I
have never looked for any.
It is possible he or his children left mentions in American documents that
would point to his identity but I know of no-one who has ever conducted a
search.

Reply to Mark Rockwell,
As far as I know we have not been able to find who
Josiah Churchell's parents were or where in England he came
from. There is a new book out that has updated and corrected
some past mistakes for Josiah's line. The book title is:
"A Family Odyssey - The Connecticut Churchills and the
Settling of America 1635-1900"
by our cousin Malcolm H. Churchill
4715 47th St. NW
Washington, D.C. 20016
printed by Gateway Press Inc
Baltimore, MD 1999
Library of Congress Catalog Card # 99-75391
Malcolm may still have extra books left. I paid $25.00
for mine.
Hope this helps,
