One more thing: Also in St. George's cemetery we find "In loving memory of Cairne Cross Church, died December 1st, 1954, and his wife, Robina, died May 2nd,11981. My wife and I visited Carrick-on-Shannon in 2002. and found no remaining members of the Church family. Also, if you will send me your postal address (to church(a)vc.net), I will send you a copy of "Carrick-on-Shannon Remembered" by the local historical society and reprinted in 1999. It mentions a newspaper article from The Leitrim Observer, "Musical Entertainments at Carrick-on-Shannon." It mentions a Mr. Church, a Mrs. Church, and a Miss F. Church, the Misses Church (2), and Mr. C.C. Church." No first names, sadly. At any rate, I have two copies and would be happy to send one to you.
Regards,
Cousin Bob

Dear Ms. Gleasure:
My name is Robert Church. I was born in California, but my father, Robert Marmaduke Church, was born in Carrick-on-Shannon in1897. I may be able to help a bit with your search, some documented and some speculation. My G-G-Grandfather, George Church, was (speculation here) a brother of Hugh Church. Also (speculation), I believe that Hugh was George's brother, and that their father was named Thomas. Church of Ireland records (Kiltoghert Parish) indicated that Hugh and Mary Ann Church had the following children baptized to them: Baptismal dates: Thomas William (6-8-1880), Robert Galbraith (?-?-1839), Martha Isabella (15-18-1840), and "Carncross"" (19-8--1887). Robert Galbraith and Jane Newton also had children, baptized as follows: Thomas William (6-8-1880), Jane Caroline (15-7-1881), Carn Cross ((4-1-1883), Mary Evelina (13-4-1884), Ann Martha (26-8-1885), and Kathleen Victoria (19-8-1887). There are also gravestones in the cemetery of St. George's Church (Church !
of Ireland) reading as follows: "To the memory of Hugh Thomas Church, who died the 11th of December 1860, Aged 53 years, and of Mary Anne Church, his beloved wife, who died the 21st of January 1870., aged 66 years. In the Griffith's Valuations, listing all householders in Leitrim in the 1850's, we find George and Hugh both listed.
Now, for a REAL stretch, in June 1777, George Church, The Grove,Co. Derry, died from a fall from his horse. And, according to Trinity College, the Down Survey of Ireland listed George Church as owning a townland called Moyletra Kill, 60 acres in County Derry, South of Coleraine, with a listed population of "one English and nine Irish". It was always thought that the family came to Leitrim from the North of Ireland. I really hope we can connect the dots on that one. By the way, most of the above information came from the Leitrim Genealogy Centre, County Library, Ballinamore, Co, Leitrim, Ireland. Let's hope that we can attack this line together!
Regards,
Bob Church

BTW, I have located a number of distant cousins in South Africa who, I believe, descend from Hugh.
