My great grandmother was Ernestina Church. She was born in Northam, Western Australia in 1880 amd married Daniel Rule in Northam in 1898. They had a number of children including my grandmother Gladys Ernestina Rule who was born in 1907.
Ernestina Church (Rule) died in 1919. My grandmother Gladys was sent to live with "Grandpa Church" in the Pinjarra/Coolup area. I have found records of George and Jane Church (nee Moore) in Coolup but they were married in 1903. There are therefore unlikely to be Ernestina Church's parents even though the residence is a match. In addition, Jane Church died in 1956 aged 90 which would make her only 14 when Ernestina was born in 1880.
Pinjarra cemetary has a record of a John Church (buried 15/9/1937 aged 86) and a Jane Church (buried 29/8/1956 aged 90). This Jane appears to be one and the same as the Jane Moore who married George Church. I do not know how John and Jane were related but they appear to be buried in the same grave.
Can anyone help me identify the parents of Ernestina Church?

Hi! I think I may have some information on your Philip T. Church. I think he may be the brother of Simeon H. Church also from Covington. Simeon and Philip both sold land on the same day in 1860. I have never been able to determine who their parents were, but I do believe that Philip and Simeon are related. In the 1850 census, he does live next to another Philip Church who is old enough to be his father. Simeon was from Covington and moved to nearby Leicester in 1850 after getting married to Eliza Hubbard.

Hello Rodney--
My Church ancestor, Fannie Church (b. abt. 1809), married Nathaniel Eggleston Hooker in Hartford CT c. 1830. The Eggleston, Harrison and Church names appear as middle names for three of their sons, and there are a couple of Hubbards connected with their line, as well. I am sending you the entire tree because you may recognize other names or
features that look familiar.
It appears that your Michigan people may have migrated from CT to NY to MI (and VT, in the case of Alden Church), a typical rote for Hartford migrants of that era. I'm not sure if this migration was connected with the Fire Lands bounty, or not, but there must have been a very strong
pull. One of Nathaniel Eggleston Hooker's cousins, Frank Hooker (who married a Porter), was a well-known judge in Charlotte MI, and the two families were very close. Nathaniel and Fannie lived in Maumee, Lucas
OH, not far from the MI border.
Your reference to Merinda Church reminded me of a Miranda Church who was the sister of a Fannie Church, also born in 1809, both daughters of Samuel Church (b. Hartford CT) and Sabra Farnum of Massachusetts. They lived in Sunderland, Franklin MA, where he was a physician and a very active politician, from all reports. I wish I could claim this Fannie, but it appears that she has another family.
I can send you a descendancy tree that will show the surnames you mentioned. It might be helpful, since the Hartford Hookers, until the 1820s, always married within the group of original Hartford founding families. This is why Fannie Church is such an anomaly; usually, the families they married into have been fairly easy to locate.
My email is maureen(a)redshift.com.
Maureen

Jim, regarding whether there is any proof that Oliver of Fredericksburgh ever married Jemima Richard/Richards, it is true that most or all of the references I've seen appear to be based on hearsay. However, the petition of Jemiah (sic) Church on 25 Jan 1809, reads in part "... Jemiah Church ... is the daughter of John Richards, U.E. Loyalist ... is married to Oliver Church ... of Fredericksburgh". That is the only objective proof I've seen. (like the other petitions I've seen, this one was also attested by Hazelton Spencer. There are a few parts that are illegible to me, I think I'll scan what I have and put it online in the belief that there are better eyes than mine.)
(I'm inclined to believe that this "John Richards" was the anglicized version of "Jean Richard" which I admit is based only on a very casual process of elimination.)
Your website that includes the research of Bradley Brehmer raises some great questions about 'my' Olivers. Personally I don't find it odd that Oliver Jr. was removed from the UE list since his 1797 land petition may have been illegal in that he was not yet twenty-one and his service was merely as a young teenage volunteer in UC long after the hostilities.
Perhaps I should also mention that I don't have any desire to prove Loyalist descent, it's just that the voluminous material that has been produced about the Loyalists coincides with what appear to be several of my lines. After all, Oliver Jr., married the daughter of a Yankee soldier, Gerrit/Garrett Clute who received a US Revolutionary Soldier's Pension, as did his widow. After his death, even daughter Mary/Merete Church even applied for a US pension, talk about having your cake and eating it!
Beyond that, I'd like to see the origins of all the early UC Oliver Church's sorted, not just 'mine'. Seems natural to me to feel a little possessive about one's ancestors and to resent the sloppiness of phony connections that some people publish. Can't fault people for experimenting with connections because that can sometimes produce the truth but I wish they'd make it clear that their published trees are speculative. I think your site is in the right vein, a step in the right direction in that it admits alternatives which most of the published trees don't. I think I'll start adding the other Olivers to my own tree for that reason.
A few months ago in a weak moment, I splurged and ordered a DNA kit but had second thoughts about completing and returning it. I may send it in yet. Don't know what would come of it but it would be interesting to see what would result if known descendants of other Olivers did the same!
