I know all about the ones that think my Oliver is the son of Malachi. They only do it because they are too lazy I think to examine the details of the two men. They just look at the name Oliver and bingo they dump my Oliver into the other Oliver's shoes, not paying attention that their birth date is 20 years out, their wives are different, their children are different, although they both had children named Oliver.
Even their Oliver's wive's name are different. Problem is Jemima may have had a sister Margaret but her name would have been Richards, and my Margaret is Pangborn. Is there any proof that your Oliver even married Jemima Richards? Last I say the only details that we known in New York was that he married a Jemima.
My Oliver is not a Loyalist because any of the records you look at he never had anything. Look at what your Oliver had, Livestock, Land, Money, etc and look at what my Oliver had, Nothing, he leased a clergy reserve and that was it, owned very little livestock, no land. What is strange is that my Oliver and Margaret lived with the Loyalist Jonathon Mills Church and family in Ontario. But unfortunately there is no relationship shown in any documents. I think they are related somehow and it is more than a co-incidence that they are living together because they share the name Church. Oliver lived in Frankville,Ontario that is where he raised his children before some of them moved to Michigan.
I thought maybe Oliver may have moved to Michigan to live with his son William after Margaret died but I couldn't find any record of him there. And to add insult to it Oliver's son William and his wife Lydia Rose both died in the Bad-Axe area of Michigan which I can prove, but there are no known graves for William or his wife Lydia. Margaret is buried in a grave owned by her husband but it is only a single grave with Margaret buried in it. We think that possible my Oliver was a runaway, as we found a report of a Oliver Church being a runaway and the dates closely match the age of my Oliver. Margaret is the same, nothing is known about her background either. We can make assumptions but that is all.
The closest we can get to Loyalists is possibly through William's wife Lydia, we think she was part of the Rose's from Nine Partners New York but we can't prove that either.
I think the Church's in Nova Scotia are part of Richard Church and Elizabeth Warren's family. My Oliver's son Oliver according to The History Of Leeds and Grenville by Thad Leavitt claims to be from Danbury Vt. but there is no such place and never has been such a place. I don't know where Mr. Leavitt got his information from.

Hello Jim, Paul Church here, glad to see you are still working on the mystery. As you say, there are many people (for example a number of trees on ancestry dot com) who think the Oliver Church who was born about 1773 was the son of Malachi, which seems almost certainly wrong.
You may be interested to know that a few months ago somebody posted gravestone images for Oliver Junior, aka Capt. Oliver, son of the Oliver born about 1756 and grandson of Malachi. This shows that he died in 1852 and his wife Mary/Mereta (nee Clute) a few years later. (The Jemima Richard who married Oliver b. 1756 happened to have a sister named Margaret who married his fellow volunteer and later friend Hazelton Spencer who attested a number of the land petitions of Oliver's children.)
A few months ago I was looking at some Loyalist Provision list or other and for some reason which I don't remember at the moment, I came away with the idea that the 1773 Oliver was also a Loyalist but had come to the Frontenac area from Nova Scotia (there were some Loyalists who went to NS as opposed to Canada/later Upper Canada). If I remember why I thought that, I'll post again.
I'm going to order some more land petitions soon, will check to see if there are some from the Kitley Church's. (My line is from the 1756 Oliver but I'm still interested to track down where the 1773 Oliver came from.)

Thanks to someone in Lewisburg, WV, I found Woodward's father and mother were William and Jane Williams Church. They are buried in Old Stone Church Cemetery, Lewisburg, WV, as are Woodward and Polly Church and other family members. Still trying to track down origin of William and Jane Williams Church. If you would like more information, contact me at merjamby(a)hotmail.com. I'll be glad to share what I have.

I have some family history from the Church family - I think it is the same lineage - I can only go back as far as Woodard and Polly Church. I married into the church family and am very interested in finding out as much as I can.

Dear Fredsite2,
I have a huge family of English Churches but do not quite make it to 1600,
My lot are all Londeners, starting off in the central city of London, mostly Holborn but spreading to Shoreditch/St Lukes/Bethnal Green etc,
Mostly they were shoemakers and indeed the family business of Church Shoes still exsists in Northampton making expensive shoes for rich sheiks. A long way from my lot.
In the 1870's shoemaking became mechanised and many of my Churches moved across the river to Bermondsey and became General Dealers. This probably meant they had a barrow down the market. Am I any help?? regards Annice

I am not aware of anyone. William and Lydia went to Michigan and Oliver
Jr. went to New York. That accounts to two of the three and I don't know
where Joseph wound up. There was only the three boys.

This is also and error and Jemima's husband is 20 years older than our Oliver and no details of either one match the other. Even professional Genealogists agree they are two different people. The funny part is our Oliver& Margaret and family lived with Jonathan Mills Church who is related to Oliver and Jemima but we aren't related that is shown anywhere and we don't fit in as a relative of Jonathan Mills Church.

I don't think they were married in Ontario as their son Oliver Jr. in the History of Leeds & Grenville by Thad E. Leavitt claims to be born in Danbury Vermont but there is no such place in Vermont and never has been such a place. Their son William's wife Lydia Rose we believe to be part of the Roses from Nine Partners New York but it is just a guess too. Like I said earlier William and Lydia moved with their family to Bad-Axe Michigan where they both died but there is no grave for either one in any of the records and I was there a few years ago and searched all the cemeteries in the area and no record of them.

If its in Lehigh's Cemetery it is the right one. Looking for her husband's tombstone as well but there is no trace of it. My guess is it could be in Bad-Axe Michigan area but there is no trace of the it there either. I believe Bad-Axe because that is where is son William and Lydia and family moved to. There is no trace of graves for William and Lydia either but we know for sure they both died in Bad-Axe.

I have occasionally researched this Elijah Church family to see if I could find a link to mine, without result. If this is the Elijah Church who was also a pioneer of Brown Co., OH you may want to look at this. Go to google books. search BIOGRAPHICAL MEMOIRS OF GRATIOT COUNTY, MICHIGAN. search the book for Isaac H. Church. You can also find more info on Isaac and also ancestors Isaac and Thomas before him by doing an internet search. I felt Elijah may be connected to this family but never tried to prove it out. There was also a David Church in Fayette Co., PA found in the Fed. census mid to late 1800's...some researchers had believed David was a son of this Elijah. If you could be so kind as to let me know if you find any connections, as will I. Good luck
