I think this is a great place to add stories about the Church family. Sometime those help to identify the family they are from. My husbands family have the story (from Brant County, Ontario, Canada) that their immigrant ancester was in a an duel and got on a ship for America with only 25 cents in his pocket. Now that doesn't sound correct but the name Philip Church matches with the Philip Church whose ancester was John Baker Church that owned the dueling pistols. John Baker Church left England in a hurry because he thought that he killed a man in a duel. Anyone else have that story? The family was supposed to also be psychic or have second sight.

My father died last year but before he died we spent a lot of time together talking about our Church family and the stories that have been handed down.
At first I thought that some of stories had been slightly exaggerated as what sometimes happens from generation to generation. Here are some of the stories, some which I have proved and some which are still unanswered
Our ancestors came over from England at the time of the Mayflower (yes, my line is Richard Church of Hartford, CT)
We originally came from the US (yes, my father gave nicknames to all his children, one of them being "podonk". This may be a coincidence but podonk natives come from around Hartford CT)
Our Church family split during the war of Independence and brother fought against brother (my line became United Empire Loyalists when Nathaniel Church and his oldest son and possibly another son left the US and the rest of the family and moved to Fredericksburgh in Ontario Canada, pledging allegiance to King George)
One of the Churches in our family was an inventor and invented one of the first automatic washing machines (actually I found this inventor when I found some agricultural machine designs he had patented)
My father told me a story about one of our Church ancestors who lived on the Prairie on the Canadian border. One day he just got up and walked out the house leaving a wife and children. He was never seen again by his Canadian family but there were rumours that he was discovered in the US........with another wife and children! (I have never been able to get to the bottom of this story but would love to!)
My father suffered from a chronic skin allergy which he controlled with strong medication. He said that his father and his father's father suffered from the same thing so this condition is genetic. It also seems that it is handed down through sons. As my father had only girls, we luckily have not suffered from this condition. After doing some research on his condition, I discovered that it was endocrine related (adrenal, pituitary, thyroid). Are there any Churches out there with similar health issues?
This is all I can remember off the top of my head and I hope it resonates with some who read this posting :)

Cindy, If you have a male Church relative we can firm this up through Y-DNA. We have a Richard of Hartford Group on Family Tree DNA and we can probably match you up with a 37 or 62 marker test. Subscribe to the Church surname group.

Does anyone have a Philip Church born abt 1812 in New York, he married abt 1828 probably in Mohawk Chapel in Brant County, Ontario, Canada to Mary Johnson born in Canada? I have been unable to locate the parents of this couple. My husband even had his Family Tree DNA done with only one match.
The children of Philip and Mary Church are:
1. Laura married Morris Tufford
2. Parmelia married Lewis H. Estelle
3. Ransalar
4. Seth married Harriett Harrison (one of their children was named Duncan)
5. Charles married Emily I. Harrison
6. Mary
7. Alanson married Agness Bailey
8. Norman married Jane Clark
9. John H. married Malvina Carney
10. William H.
11. George
OBITUARY: 11 Feb 1881 The Daily Sentinel Review, Woodstock, Oxford Co, Ontario, Canada 11 Feb 1881 (Funeral took place Feb 5, 1881) Burford lost one of its oldest inhabitant last week of Mr. Philip Church, father of Alanson Church. The well known and intensive lumberman of Blandford. He settled in the township over fifty years ago, being one of the earliest settlers. He had a large family, eleven children, nine of whom along with his aged partner in life survived him. The funeral took place Saturday last to the Christian Church, Governors Road, east of Princeton and was largely attended.
I also found this information on the Church family:
SOURCE: "Men of Upper Canada Militia Nominal Rolls, 1828-1829" edited and with an introduction by: Bruce S. Elliott; Dan Walker; Fawne Strateford-Devai. [p.312]. This is probably my husband's Philip Church
Any help you can give would be appreciated. John H. Church was born in Oswego, New York. He worked on the Grand Western railroad from NY to Michigan.

Hi Jim,
This is what I found on CD# 159, Family Archives, "New England Families,
1600s-1800s", William Richard Cutter (full source at the end).
The Marsh Line. Pages 2366.
(I) John Marsh, the immigrant ancestor of this branch of the family, was
born in England in 1618, and is said to have come to New England in 1635,
going first to Cambridge, Massachusetts. He is supposed to have gone with
Hooker's company to Hartford, the next year, and he was a first settler
there. He had grants of land for himself and for others in 1639-40. His home
lot was No. 16 on the north side of the street that now runs through
Rushnell Park, where Temple and Front streets now cross. He had other grants
later, and was a proprietor of the common lands. He was a leading citizen
of Hartford, one of the five higher magistrates in 1639, holding office
until 1655, when he became deputy governor. After serving as governor in
1656, he resumed the office of magistrate, which he held until 1659. He
removed at that time to Hadley, Massachusetts. He was dismissed from the
Hartford church, July 11, 1656, his removal being caused by church
differences. He had lot No. 34 in Hadley, and was one of the selectmen in
1675. He was one of the original members of the Northampton church, June 18,
1661. John Marsh died September 28, 1688, at Windsor, Connecticut, probably
while on a visit to his daughter, Hannah Loomis. His will was dated March 3,
1687-88, and proved December 4, 1688. He married (first) Anne Webster,
daughter of Governor John Webster. She died June 9, 1662. He married
(second) October 7, 1664, Hepzibah (Ford) Lyman, widow of Richard Lyman, and
daughter of Thomas Ford, of Hartford. Children by first wife: John, born
about 1643; Samuel, mentioned below; Joseph, baptized January 24, 1647;
Isaac, baptized July 15, 1649, died young; Jonathan, born September, 1649;
Daniel; Hannah; Grace, Children by second wife: Lydia, born October 9, 1667.
An adopted daughter, Grace Martin, daughter of his sister, Lydia (Marsh)
Martin. [This does go on to list six more generations: Samuel(2),
Thomas(3), Joseph(4), Joseph(5), Moses(6), Moses(7).]

As you can see, there is no Anne listed as a daughter. So I agree with you
that Anne Marsh is not the Anne, wife of Richard Church of Hartford, CT &
Hadley, MASS.
The will of Richard Church of Hartford does mention wife Anne, sons Edward,
Samuell(sic) & John and Daughter Graves, which is in the book, "A Genealogy
of History of the Church Family in America" by Alice M. Church, 1911 to
1948; reprinted by - Higginson Book Company, 148 Washington St. PO Box 778,
Salem, Mass., 01970.
Rita, great-granddaughter of Maria Jane Church, who is the daughter of Peres
Church.

Cindy there is one part of your statement that needs clarification. The only proof that Richard Church married Ann Marsh is the work of Gustave Anjou and the man was a fraud. Even Richard's will as I know it states his wife was Ann and no one in the family ever referred to her as Ann Marsh. If you don't know about Anjou there is more about him here. The family as you have it looks right but the Marsh part I think could be ruled out.
