Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
This was sent to me by another list and I felt it was important to get the
information out to those who might not know.

Hi Barb,
Your message got through! Sounds like a tough brickwall. Let's see what I can find.
[A] I can find a reference to Clarissa Church, daughter of Gideon Church and Phebe Ferris, who married William Doty in Glens Falls NY on 9 Dec 1840 -- in the book Doty-Doten family in America: descendants of Edward Doty, an emigrant by the Mayflower, 1620, by Ethan Allen Doty, published by E.A. Doty, 1897 [via Google Books]. Glens Falls is near Queensbury so that's consistent with your family story.
[B] Then in the book Quaker Queries by Ruby Simonson McNeill, published by R.S. McNeill, there is this information [can't see full text via Google Books but here's most of it] from page 6:
"FERRIS: Looking for Gideon Church born 15 June 1779 Washington County, New York - died 19 April 1839, probably Queensbury, New York. Claimed bankruptcy 1824, Washington County, New York. Married Phoebe Ferris of Zachariah Ferris of Massachusetts and New York about 1803. Had 13 children, in and around Washington County, all traceable."
You have most of that information, but the person who submitted that query provided more specific details on birth and death dates, as well as a place of birth. Don't know what documentation they might have had.
[C] Your Gideon Church is not in Descendants of Richard Church of Plymouth, Mass., Rutland, Vt.: Tuttle Co., 1913, which you surely know, but I record here for others you might try to help you. There is a Gideon Church, No. 389, of the right era but he was b. in 1761, married other women.
[D] The 1790 Census has just one Church household in Washington County, where some researchers believe Gideon was born. That is:
Your Gideon Church, whether born in 1777 or 1779, could have fit in that household in the free males under 16 grouping.
The 1800 Census for Washington County has Bethue Church household in Salem township with 6 other church households in the county.
The 1810 Cenus for Washington County has 4 Church household in Salem township:
> Bathuel Church
> Bathuel Church Jr.
> Gideon Church
> William Church
Then if you look at the page with Gideon [ Series: M252 Roll: 30 Page: 342 ] you also find on that same page Bathuel, Bathuel Jr and William. This is not proof, but it suggests that Gideon Church may well have been related in some way to Bathuel Church, possibly one of his sons. It was very typical of related men to have farms quite near each other in the era.
1810 household for Gideon Church:
Free White Males:
2 males under 10
No males 10-15 or 16-25
1 male 26-44 -- this is Gideon, 31 or 33 years old
No males 45 & Over.
Free White Females:
1 female under 10
No females 10-15
1 female 16-25 -- if this is the right family, this is Phoebe Ferris Church who was 23 years old
No females 26-44 or 45 & Over.
We find the birthdate for Phoebe Ferris on a The OneWorldTree pedigree on Ancestry.com where her details are:
> Born 9 Jun 1787, daughter of James Ferris and Mary Calkins
> Zachariah Ferris is her second great-grandfather
> Married Gideon Church
> Died 17 May 1847, Glens Falls, Warren, New York, USA
There is a James Ferris household in Washington County NY as follows:
> 1790, James Ferris, Queensbury, Washington County, NY
SEE: http://www.rays-place.com/census/ny-wash-queensbury.htm
> 1800, James Ferris, Queensbury, Washington County, NY
Queensbury was once much larger than today and its history helps you envision where the Church and Ferris families lived -- close enough for Gideon and Phoebe to meet:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Queensbury,_New_York
Map showing how close Salem, Washington County, is to Glens Falls, NY:
http://www.adirondack.net/maps/countymaps/washington.cfm
The best next step is to try to find legal documents in Washington County NY. For example, Bethuel / Bathuel Church may have left a will that lists his sons, which would give you solid proof. Or perhaps land transactions.
Hope this inspires you to keep searching! I think you have a chance to overcome this brickwall if you dig deep enough for more records.

I have a lost Gideon Church, born about 1775 in the northeast - married Phoebe Ferris about 1800, probably in NY, had 10 kids, died probably in the Queensbury, NY area, in 1837. He claimed bankrupcy in 1824 in Washington Co, NY. Cannot locate his father. I can trace Phoebe Ferris back to England. Just cannot find Gideon's father. Thanks for listening.

Wayne,
I am so happy to find another person researching our line. Bobby has had me looking for Confederate line but I am afraid we were all Union. Most of the Charles line lived in Kentucky during the war so I guess we are Yankees Ha Smile Booby finds this had to swallow!!!I checked my e mail and you should be able to use it directly. I have a Family tree started on My Family, My heritage, Rootsweb and Lds Geneology. My fathers name is spelled several differant ways (Burben) Burbage Church, Robert Luther Church is Bobbys' father they are both sons of John Henry Church but have different Mothers Eva Charles Married him first and she died in childbirth in August 1911. Then he married Cora B. Charles her sister and had my dad . I have been researching a long time and had about given up onm getting any further on this line! As you know when you put common names in John, Charles, Church you come up with everything.
I stay with the sites that have little or no cost.

I have not seen the Alice Church work for a while but I think if you dig into Richard of Hartford's life you will find that his wife's name is mentioned as Ann and nowhere does it mention her last name as being Marsh. Richard's will states only that her name was Ann. The only place the name Marsh comes up is in the the work done by Gustav Anjou. Anjou was an expert forger and not a genealogist researcher. For more information on Anjou you can read here. I believe part of Alice's work is based on Anjou's research.

Sorry for the other post on the board. I didn't notice this one. Let me fold it into this.
I can trace my line with a reasonable degree of certainty back to Richard of Hartford. I'm in the process of getting a 37 marker DNA test completed and have the first 12. Based upon the collaboration at http://www.worldfamilies.net/surnames/church/ I have a preliminary match with two other distant cousins who also trace their line back to Richard of Hartford. I've applied for membership in the Ancestry.com Church group but am not yet authorized.
It will really advance our ability to differentiate among the Church lines if we can get some more testing done. I think either FTDNA or the Ancestry.com testing will work.
An aside on Ann Marsh. My copy of the Alice Church genealogy, which I find to be the most through for Richard of Hartford lists Ann Marsh as Richard's wife. I'll check her source when I get home tonight, but I've not found errors in my line from her yet.
I also think DNA information from the other Church lines would make life easier. For those who have been tested, my haplogroup is I2a.

Hi, I have been working on this question for a few days too, as I was asked by Robert Church, in Covington, VA to find a confederate ancestor, after he heard I was researching the Charles family. I am descended from "Tip" Charles, brother of Eva, Cora, and Cleveland. I have pretty much narrowed my search to the John Church you mentioned living in the Justice household. I think The Martha mentioned may be a grandmother to John and the nancy on the 1900 census. it says her relation to the head of the houshold is mother, and nancy is listed as neice. Martha had a daughter Nancy, who is old enought to have been the two churches parent, maybe married an unknown Church, and died in an accident? not sure, I will keep looking.
