DEATH OF S.W. CHURCH
Well-Known Native Son of Oregon succumbs to Long Illness
Samuel W. Church, a well-known resident of Portland and a native son of Oregon, died at his residence, corner Twelfth and Clay streets, at 7:30 last night, after an illness of nearly seven weeks. The malady was an obscure heart trouble that refused to yield to medical treatment. Improvement was noticed several times during the progress of the disease, and his physicians were at times quite hopeful of his recovery; but for some days past it has been evident that a fatal outcome was inevitable.
Mr. Church was born in Harrisburg, Or., February 13, 1857. He was a son of S.T. Church, a widely-known pioneer, who died many years ago. His mother, now Mrs. J.J. Murphy, of Salem, wife of the Clerk of the State Supreme Court, survives him. His sisters, Mrs. A.J. Giesy and Mrs. L.G. Clarke, both live in this city. Mr. Church resided in Salem for many years and came to Portland about 18 years ago. He was a partner in the firm of Abbott & Church, engaged in the manufacture of woven-wire mattresses. He leaves a widow and two children, Genevieve and Ruth, aged 16 and 14 years respectively.
Mr. Church's family connections included several of the prominent families of the state. He was a brother-in-law to Dr. A.J. Giesy, and L. G. Clarke, of Woodard, Clarke & Co. The surviving widow is a granddaughter of Mrs. Asa McCully, mother of Mrs. A. B. Crossman. Though quiet and unobtrusive by nature, he was a man of wide acquaintance and many friendships. No arrangements have yet been made for the funeral.

Funeral was held Nov. 29, 1901. He was buried in the Riverview cemetery. See attachment.

How exciting to hear from you. Would love to hear what happened to William and his decendents as well.
Starting to believe that Ebenezer did have a brother Samuel and Martin and was from New York. Looks possible that their father's name was Ebenezer as well. That Ebenezer was born 1789 in Connecticut and died 1879 in Ostego County NY. He was married to Charity born 1790 form Connecticut and died 1872 in New York.
My great uncle is working on this with me and thinks that Ebenezer's dad was named James Church born 1735.
Still trying to confirm things.

Do you know if this Samuel, born in 1792, had a child by the name of
James born about 1835? This James CHURCH has been my brick wall now for
8 years.
Thank you
Leslie

we have a Samuel Church b. August 26, 1792. His father, Samuel, was
born in Killingly, Conn. in 1755. They are descended from Garrett
Church, b. 1611. This line ended up in the Vergennes, Vt. area.

Thank you for your reply re George W. Church. It was very interesting and helpful.
Helen Church was my paternal grandmother. Her mother, Ellen Burdick Church (wife of George W.),
died in 1934. I remember her very well. I was only 11 at the time and not filled in on the
details of her mysterious husband. By the time I got interested in genealogy all of my
ancestral sources were gone.
Morgan L. and Olive Burdick were my gg grandparents. He was a bigwig from the Town of
Lake, a farmer and also a carpenter. I can guess that he and your Benjamin were acquainted.
Morgan built the first frame house in Milwaukee which is at the corner of N. 1st Street and
Locust Street.
I have always been curious about Milwaukee's Benjamin and wondered if there were a
connection. I am very familiar with his home in Estabrook Park.
In the Church forum there is frequent mention of a Benjamin Church who lived in the eastern
or southeastern part of the country.
If you are interested I can send you more info on Morgan and Olive.
Thanks again.

Subject: [CHURCH] George Church, Benjamin Church in Milwaukee
Hello,
I am a descendant of the Benjamin Church (1807-1887) who arrived in Milwaukee in 1835 when it
really was three small towns -- Juneautown, Kilbourntown and Walker's Point. He can from Ulster
County, New York, near New Paltz and Clintondale. He was a builder and carpenter, and held some
minor political posts. His Greek Revival family home is a small museum today.
See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Benjamin_Church_House
and: http://www.workingdogweb.com/Benjamin_Church_House.htm
Benjamin had many brothers and sisters. Brothers I know of -- from a Church genealogy book --
were John, Adam, Jacob, Samuel, Thorn, James, born 1816, and George, the latter born in 1819.
In May 1840, Benjamin Church sold land to a man named James Church -- and I have wondered it he
was Benjamin's younger brother. Now I wonder if your George Church was also Benjamin's brother.
There's no family lore to that fact, however, and Julia provided a lineage for George Church
who married Melissa.
The most interesting record I found was the 1880 Census for Lake Township, Milwaukee County,
showing siblings Frank Church b. abt. 1865 and Helen Church b. abt. 1866 living with their
grandparents M. L. and Olive Burdick. See the family here:
http://www.familysearch.org/eng/search/census/household_record.asp?HOUSEH...
That surely seems likely to be Frank and Helen Church with their maternal grandparents, parents
of Ellen Burdick. Is there a chance that both George W. Church and his wife Ellen Burdick
Church were deceased?
Best wishes in your research.
Barbara

Subject: [CHURCH] George W. Church of Milwaukee
To: <CHURCH-L(a)rootsweb.com>
I am looking for information on George W. Church, my great grandfather, born in Wisconsin in
1844. He married Ellen Burdick in Milwaukee. Their children were Helen Marion Church born in
Milwaukee in 1868 and Frank Church date of birth unknown but probably born in Milwaukee. Frank
may have lived in Cleveland.
His father was George Church born in New York (whether in NY City is unknown) who was married
to Melissa (?). Beside George W. they had Mary E. Church in 1849 and Irene A. Church in 1858.
There was a Benjamin Church who was a prominent figure in Milwaukee history. We do not know if
George and he were related or not.
Other than the above we know nothing about George W.; whether he died relatively young, flew
the coop, divorced or whatever. Maybe he became a closet skeleton.
Any help would be appreciated.

Another researcher me wrote that George Church (b.1819-), who was married to
Melissa, was the son of Cyrus Church (1782-1868) and Phoebe Cass, both of whom
died in Dodge County, WI. Cyrus was the son of Jonathan Church (1747-1827)
and Perone Whipple and Jonathan was the son of Nathaniel Church and Rachael
McCranney. This line eventually connects to Richard Church who was one of
the founding fathers of Hadley, MA. and Ann Marsh.
