Hi
If you look on the census forms when Ebenezer is living in 1860 in Posy County, there is a Samuel Church living next door. Perhaps this Samuel is his brother - he's 39 and from NY as well.

Hello,
I am a descendant of the Benjamin Church (1807-1887) who arrived in Milwaukee in 1835 when it really was three small towns -- Juneautown, Kilbourntown and Walker's Point. He can from Ulster County, New York, near New Paltz and Clintondale. He was a builder and carpenter, and held some minor political posts. His Greek Revival family home is a small museum today.
See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Benjamin_Church_House
and: http://www.workingdogweb.com/Benjamin_Church_House.htm
Benjamin had many brothers and sisters. Brothers I know of -- from a Church genealogy book -- were John, Adam, Jacob, Samuel, Thorn, James, born 1816, and George, the latter born in 1819.
In May 1840, Benjamin Church sold land to a man named James Church -- and I have wondered it he was Benjamin's younger brother. Now I wonder if your George Church was also Benjamin's brother. There's no family lore to that fact, however, and Julia provided a lineage for George Church who married Melissa.
The most interesting record I found was the 1880 Census for Lake Township, Milwaukee County, showing siblings Frank Church b. abt. 1865 and Helen Church b. abt. 1866 living with their grandparents M. L. and Olive Burdick. See the family here:
http://www.familysearch.org/eng/search/census/household_record.asp?HOUSEH...
That surely seems likely to be Frank and Helen Church with their maternal grandparents, parents of Ellen Burdick. Is there a chance that both George W. Church and his wife Ellen Burdick Church were deceased?
Best wishes in your research.

I am looking for information on George W. Church, my great grandfather, born in Wisconsin in 1844. He married Ellen Burdick in Milwaukee. Their children were Helen Marion Church born in Milwaukee in 1868 and Frank Church date of birth unknown but probably born in Milwaukee. Frank may have lived in Cleveland.
His father was George Church born in New York (whether in NY City is unknown) who was married to Melissa (?). Beside George W. they had Mary E. Church in 1849 and Irene A. Church in 1858.
There was a Benjamin Church who was a prominent figure in Milwaukee history. We do not know if George and he were related or not.
Other than the above we know nothing about George W.; whether he died relatively young, flew the coop, divorced or whatever. Maybe he became a closet skeleton.
Any help would be appreciated.

Another researcher me wrote that George Church (b.1819-), who was married to
Melissa, was the son of Cyrus Church (1782-1868) and Phoebe Cass, both of whom
died in Dodge County, WI. Cyrus was the son of Jonathan Church (1747-1827)
and Perone Whipple and Jonathan was the son of Nathaniel Church and Rachael
McCranney. This line eventually connects to Richard Church who was one of
the founding fathers of Hadley, MA. and Ann Marsh.

I guess determining who the "famous Richard Church" is also depends on what area you are reseraching. The famous Richard Church for me would have been the one born ca. 1645 who lived in Virginia. He died 15 Feb 1706 in Princess Anne Co., VA.

Hello again.
In the book "Descendants of Richard Church of Plymouth, Mass." published in Rutland, Vt.: Tuttle Co., 1913, there is a chapter called "Unplaced Members of the Plymouth Family."
Starting on page 321 is a statement of the LeFevre family of Ulster County NY that Phebe Church and her brother Caleb Church [my Caleb Church who married Hannah Baker] were both children of the Caleb Church b. 1728 who traces back Caleb, Nathaniel, Joseph, Joseph, Richard Church of Plymouth.
So yes, the Richard Church of Plymouth who married Elizabeth Warren.
I am just happy that my Caleb Church and Hannah Baker are in the book, with brief descriptions of their lives and a listing of their children, including Benjamin b. 1807 who came to Wisconsin to help "build" the young city. He was a carpenter. To have the brief details is so valuable.
I have been in touch with other descendants of Benjamin Church of NY & WI, still carrying the Church surname. They and their father have looked to no avail. Perhaps someday I will visit Ulster and Dutchess counties in New York to see if there are any relevant records hidden away somewhere.
Thanks for writing.
Barbara

There are not any Philip Church's in the Richard Church line nor in any other's. Judge Phillip Church seems to be from the "The Man Who Owned The Pistols" by Helene Phelan. I do have that book which was written in 1981. John Barker Church married Angleica Schuyler. He owned the dueling pistols used by Alexander Hamilton. My husband's family story says that he left England with no money in his pocket and came to the new world. I could go into more detail but thought I would give you this insight.

I am not connected to these Church you mention but am curious when you say the Famous Richard Church, which one are you referring to? There is Richard Church who married Ann (unknown) or Richard Church who married Elizabeth Warren..These two from my research are the most popular of the American Churchs.

Hello. It is sometimes hard to tell from queries how much research has already been done. Your research is clearly exceptional as you have actually visited the locations in question. Thanks for sharing the obituary as I enjoyed looking into the Church ancestor you are researching.
My primary Church ancestor is Ann Marie Church, daughter of Benjamin Church of Ulster County, NY, and his wife Permelia, maiden name unknown. They were early settlers in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in 1835.
Ann Marie, who went by Hannah or Mary, was b. abt. 1840 in Wisconsin and was married in 1859 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, to Sherman A. Bradley, b. 1835 in Litchfield County, CT.
Benjamin Church was the son of Caleb Church and Hannah Baker of Clintondale, Ulster County, NY. Caleb's Church ancestry is said to trace to the famous Richard Church but that is not proven. People have worked on that for decades!
Best wishes!

I am seeking more information on my 4th great-grandparents Robert Church and Mary Matilda Smith as well as information about their ancestors and/or descendants.
The following information is what I have:
Robert Church was born 16 Jun 1810 in Tennessee. He married Mary Matilda Smith on 2 Jul, 1830 in Maury, Tennessee. He died 2 Jun 1845 in Marion County, Illinois and was buried in Robinson Cemetery, Iuka, Marion, Illinois.
Mary Matilda Smith was born 20 August 1804 in Tennessee. She died 10 Apr 1876 and is buried in Robinson Cemetery, Iuka, Marion, Illinois.
Prior to moving to Illinois, Robert and Mary Matilda Church had the following children:
Keziah C. Church born 7 Jul 1831 in Maury County, Tennessee
Nancy Church born 1831 in Maury County, Tennessee (my line descends from her)
Dorcas Church born 19 Feb 1835 probably in Maury County, Tennessee
According to Illinois State Genealogical Society Robert and Mary Matilda are listed as "Prairie Pioneers" arriving in Illinois in 1840.
After their arrival in Marion County, Illinois they had the following children:
Eve or Eva Church born 12 Jan 1840 in Illinois
Lavella Church born abt 1842 in Marion County, Illinois
Robert Church born 8 Oct 1844 in Marion County, Illinois
After Robert's death, Mary Matilda Smith Church married the widower Thomas Chapman in Marion County, Illinois. They had two more children: Thomas and Rachel Matilda in addition to the six children he had from his previous marriage to Rachel Garrison.
I have an unsubstantiated lead that indicates Robert's parents are Robert Church (of Rowan County, North Carolina) and Iona Wilson Marchman. Can someone shed some light on whether this is true?
Does anyone have record Mary Matilda Smith Church Chapman's parents are?
I would very much like to finally tie Robert Church in with an ancestral line.
Thank you!

I have most of this information, but thanks anyway. I have been to most of the communities and gone through the land records and surgate records at the courthouse. That is where I found that a Philip Church was sent there to do land survey's as he was the first person in the land record book. I have seen the records of the census but have not been to all the communities in New York. They did not keep records in NY that are available. I still believe that my Philip Church is Philip T. Church or a relative and am searching for a record that will confirm it. Mary (Johnson) Church, Philip's wife is another problem, they were married in the Mohawk Chapel and there was a Native family by the name of Johnson in the area. Here is Philip's obituary and notice the info on his wife.... interesting isn't it?
OBITUARY: 11 Feb 1881 The Daily Sentinel Review, Woodstock, Oxford Co, Ontario, Canada 11 Feb 1881 (Funeral took place Feb 5, 1881) Burford lost one of its oldest inhabitant last week of Mr. Philip Church, father of Alanson Church. The well known and intensive lumberman of Blandford. He settled in the township over fifty years ago, being one of the earliest settlers. He had a large family, eleven children, nine of whom along with his aged partner in life survived him. The funeral took place Saturday last to the Christian Church, Governors Road, east of Princeton and was largely attended.
Now I have gone to Charlotte, Eaton Co, Michigan where John Church moved to while working as an engineer on the Railroad. He married in Burford/Clairmont Ontario to a Malvina Carney but they lived in Charlotte, MI. The early records in Eaton County have a Philip Church lending money for property in Eaton County. There were other Church's in the area, one was a banker, but I still cannot find a connection. They are all buried in the same cemetery in Charlotte.
I always hope someone else might be able to help me with this family. New York is such a struggle to research those early records.
Thanks for all your help with this problem. I just love the message boards everyone is so helpful.

Looking for Church families in Brant County, Ontario, Canada, at the time you gave, I find a record of a marriage of a Seth Church, son of Phillip and Mary Church.
It says Seth was born in 1833 in Blenheim, which is in Oxford County, NW of Brant County, and was living in Burford Township, Brant County, at the time of the marriage record, 20 Feb 1867. He married Hariet Harias, born in Burford Township. They married in Oxford County.
This is a map of Oxford County which is NW of Brant County, with a link under the map to people living there in 1876:
http://digital.library.mcgill.ca/CountyAtlas/oxford.htm
You will find a record for a John H. Church owning land in Oxford County at this page:
http://digital.library.mcgill.ca/CountyAtlas/showrecord.php?PersonID=117885
Here is the record for S. Church in Blenheim, Oxford County, perhaps Seth:
http://digital.library.mcgill.ca/CountyAtlas/showrecord.php?PersonID=115623
This map of Brant County shows Burford Township on the west side, and to NW is Oxford County. It too has a link under the map to find people.
http://digital.library.mcgill.ca/CountyAtlas/brant.htm
Using that link, you can find the record for P. Church in Burford North, 1875, perhaps your Phillip:
http://digital.library.mcgill.ca/CountyAtlas/showrecord.php?PersonID=65739
These records connect a Phillip Church, Mary Church, John H. Church plus a Seth Church to the region of Canada you list.
Then, in the 1851 Agricultural Census for Burford, Brant County, Ontario, there is a listing for Philip Church. He had 5 acres, 2 of them in garden or orchard and 3 of them wild or woods.
Also available is the 1871 Ontario Census. There we find:
Phillip Church, age 59, b. 1812 in USA, living in Burford, Brant County, ancestry English, occupation carpenter, religion Christian, Microfilm #C-9914 on page 14. He was a head of household, rest of the family not shown. That description matches the details on your Phillip Church.
These are more pieces of the puzzle for you and I hope they are of some help. If you haven't already, you might want to start a family history timeline for Phillip and Mary Church, with what you already had and what I have found. That will give you more ideas of records to search for such as wills, obituaries, and more birth and marriage records.
PS - You wrote that son John H. Church was born in Oswego New York in 1848. So I also looked in the US Census for 1850 and found Philip T. Church, 34, wife Mary Church, 30, and four children [no John H.], in Covington, Wyoming County, NY which is east of Buffalo and SW of Rochester. Next door was a Phillip Church, 57, a farmer, with Tryphena, 20. There are so many Church individuals so this likely not connected to your family, but it seemed worth adding just in case.
Best wishes in your family research.
Barbara

I am so frustrated with my husband's Philip Church born about 1812 somewhere in New York, USA. He married about 1828 in Brantford Gore, Ontario, Canada at the Chapel of the Mohawk Chapel to Mary Johnson. I do not even know her heritage but she was born probably in Canada and died 4 July 1887 Brant, Ontario, Canada. The name Philip is only carried in some Church lines. There was a Philip Church in the Brant County, Ontario Land Record books that did the surveying of the area. I have been unable to connect these two persons but I believe that they are connected. The son of Philip Church was John H Church born in 25 Sep 1848 in Oswego NY and was a railroad man. If anyone can help with this Philip Church is surely would be apprecieted.

Dayton lived in Broome County and was a town Recorder and signed off on lots of Census records for the county.
Someone once mentioned they thought he was from the Vermont line of Church's. Does anyone have any information at all on this line or these people? I would love to fill in the blanks. Thanks so much!
