It is with regret that I inform the board of the passing of my Aunt Margaret Vivian Church Duris. She was our family genealogist and spent many years in her quest of determining the parents of her G-Grandfather, John Calvin Church (b. 1827). Much of her research involved Greene County Pennsylvania and surrounding areas. She focused on that area since her G-Grandfather appears in the 1850 (Center Twp) and 1860 (Springhill Twp) census. Jer G-Grandfather later moved his family to Isabella county Michigan after the Civil War.
My Father, Donald Ray Church Sr. passed away the same day as my Aunt.
My sister, Renee Inayoshi and myself are continuing her quest to find the parents of her G-Grandfather. If anyone has information on the parents or other family of John Calvin Church we would love to correspond.

I am a descendant of Benjamin Church, one of Yankee John's sons. Benjamin left NC, went to SC and then Clarksville, Ga where many of the Church line lived. Benjamin's son, Timothy, his son, John M and his son Howell are all buried in Clarksville, Ga. My grandfather, Thomas Burns was the son of Howell Cobb Church.
I have visited Clarksville several times, but have not traced the family to the NC line. I am interested in anything that you may know about the line.

regarding the Jane Gilmore theory. It all started with the "Horn Papers". Professional Genealogist have warned people not to trust his writings, but his material is all over out there. Too much copycat material and not enough research for the real Jane.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Horn_Papers
Here is an explanation of the Horn Papers, where the Jane Gilmore got in to the story.
But the Horn Papers said it was John Church who married Jane Gilmore. Since they could not find or properly identify John Church they thought "he must have meant" George Church or Jane was not a Gilmore at all. And so the error began.
http://www.umass.edu/wsp/methodology/errors/horn.html Here also it tells how they determined the Horn Papers were not what they were supposed to be and that they were frauds.

Jane Andrews married Yankee John Church in Wilkes co NC. Apparently the last record anyone has found about her is in the 1820's. Would anyone know when and where she died? Thanks

FRED W. CHURCH DIES AT EL PASO OF HEART ATTACK
---------------
Newspaper Man, Active in Welfare Work in Johnstown, Up to Few Years Ago
----------------
WILL BE BURIED HERE
Fred W. Church, for many years one of Johnstown's ablest and best- known newspaper men, died suddenly at 2 o'clock this morning at his desk in the El Paso, Texas "Herald" office. A telegram conveying the sad intelligence came to the R. S. Porter family, Moxham, this morning, with the announcement also that the body would be brought to Johnstown, arriving probably Friday night. Funeral services will be conducted at the Porter residence, 411 Coleman avenue, on Saturday probably by the Rev. H. A. Bailey, of the Second Presbyterian Church, of which Mr. Church had been a member. Interment will be in Grandview Cemetery.
Born in New York State on June 13, 1880, Fred W. Church went to Hallstead, Susquehanna County where he was reared and where his first newspaper work was done. His father was a Presbyterian minister, who passed away about 10 years ago, and his widow, the mother of Fred Church, died about five years ago. One brother, Irving, and two sisters, one of them Mrs. Sidney Dearborn, of Waverly, Pa, survive.
Coming to Johnstown in the early 90's, Mr. Church first went to work as a printer on a local newspaper, which trade he had learned in his home town, but it was discovered that his talents lay along editorial lines and he was transferred to that department. His ability was some recognized and he advanced rapidly to a news-editing position. His last work here in this line was as managing editor of the Johnstown "Leader," although he was engaged later in publicity work. Mr. Church for a time was connected with the State Sanatorium at Cresson, where he organized the library, published "Smiles," a small magazine, and was an office assistant of Dr. W. O. Turnbull.
In 1922 Mr. Church went to Roswell, N.M., where he remained for a year, when his health was improved to such an extent that the call to active newspaper work could not be resisted and he assumed work on the El Paso "Herald," where he held an editorial position at the time of his death. He had been apparently in good health. Heart failure was the cause of his demise.
Mr. Church was a veteran of the Spanish-American War, having served in Company G. Thirteenth Pennsylvania Infantry, and was a member of the United Spanish-American War Veterans' Association, serving as Department Quartermaster when Dr. J. Swan Taylor, this city, was Department Commander.
Always interested in welfare work, Fred W. Church made for himself a monument along this line by his unassuming activities, in the organization of the Johnstown Associated Charities; the Mothers' Pension Bureau, the Cambria County Tuberculosis Society, the local State dispensary and other charitable work. He was instrumental in the establishing of the local employment office which he managed for a time.
Nineteen years ago Mr. Church was united in marriage to Miss Carrie Porter, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. R. S. Porter, of Moxham, who survives. Two children preceded their father to the grave.

FUNERAL SERVICES FOR F. W. CHURCH
---------
Body to Arrive Friday Morning from Texas; Will Be Taken to Porter Home
Funeral services for the late Fred W. Church, former local newspaperman who died yesterday morning at his desk in the "News-Herald" office, El Paso, Tex., will be held Friday afternoon at the home of Robert S. Porter, 409 Coleman avenue, Moxham, father of Mrs. Church, by the Rev. H. A. Bailey, of the Second Presbyterian Church. Word was received here this afternoon stating that the funeral party will arrive in Johnstown on the 10:09 train Friday morning.
The deceased was identified with Corp. L. D. Woodruff, Jr. Camp, U. S. W. V., whose members will meet at the office of Capt. J. Swan Taylor, Kernville, tomorrow night to plan to attend the funeral services.

Where did you lose them? They are spread across Upper Canada and if you do a google search you will find a lot of information on them. Unfortunately I am not related that I can prove but I believe there to be a very close relationship between that Church family and mine. My Church's consist of Oliver Church and Margaret Pangborn and Levi's is from Oliver Church and Jemima Richards. The two Oliver's are not related that anyone has ever proven.
