Hi Emily,
This George Church b.abt 1820 'may' have been my great-great-great-grandfather...
My (Step) Great Great Grandfather was George Church b.abt 1848. He married my great great grandmother, Emma Phillips b.1849 in 1877 in (or around) Little Cheverell, Wiltshire. They are placed there on the 81 and 91 Census.
Emma already had already had a son (by William Clelford b.1853) -
Archibald William Clelford-Phillips b.1873 (my great grandfather) known at the time as Archibald Church.
George and Emma then had 7 children of their own -
James b.1878
Rose M b.1880
Herbert b.1883
Charles H b.1884
Fanny L b.1886
Albert G b.1888
Ernest b.1890
Not done done any research yet on whether these children had any offspring. Hope this helps someone somewhere.
Maybe someone else out there is also descended from Emma Church (nee Phillips)? Drop me a mail!
regards,
RouX Clelford-Phillips

In looking at the record again, I realized I made a mistake...Mildred looks to me more like Milfred and being male, I would assume his name wasn't Mildred.

I'm interested in three seperate households that I found listed on the 1920 Census. Based on the ages and birthplaces, and the fact that they were all listed one after the other, I'm assuming that they are all related. Here is the info I have...
William and Cynthia S.
Children-Carie N(?), Frank W., Nancy A. Fletcher
Nancy's children-Nell, Delbert, Oscar, William
Jordan C. and Nella M(?)
Children-Cynthia J, Ethel, Syhiania(?), Nettie, John H
Creed and Nammie(?)
Children- Troy E., Mildred F., Carlus W, Alice L, William M, Bertha R.E.
**Anything with (?) means I'm not certain I have the spelling correct since some of the handwriting is hard to make out**
I'm particularly interested in Nancy, my great grandmother. Jordan and Creed's ages and birth places (Virginia) are indicative of being Nancy's brothers but of course I'm not certain of this. Can anyone confirm? I found Nancy's husband, Orville, listed as an inmate in Laurel County, which explains why she and her children were living with her parents. I'm very interested to know why he was in jail. Also, William is listed as being 5 months old...when my dad gave me a list of my grandfather's siblings, William was not on it. Curious to know if he died in infancy.
I've been trying very hard for six years now to trace my Fletcher roots and have gotten nowhere. I figured I'd try this route and see if anyone has Nancy in their line and can possibly shed a little light on Orville.
Thanks for taking the time to read!
Kelly

It would be to easy had it been in the book! Thanks for doing the lookup though. At least I know that Harrison and William Harrison are in her book.

You got a smile out of me on that one.
I know there is a Geer book out there somewhere with all of the different spellings of Geer in it. I am descended from both the Geer's and the Gere's. Here is the url for the Pierce book: http://community.webshots.com/user/randy02
It contains some information on the Geer family as well as the Church family. Book one is the rewrite of book two, but book one is in rough draft form since Mrs. Pierce got to old to finish it. Perhaps it will be of some use to you.

I'm not related to the Church family, so I don't have access to this family history.
>From what I can see on another family tree, "Pier" was his wife's mother's maiden name. In the book regarding the history of Plumas County, the history was usually obtained from the husband, so it would not strike it as unusual to me that a husband would spell his mother-in-law's maiden name wrong. Or perhaps, the family name was at one time "Piert", but "americanized" somewhere along the way.
Both names appear to be English.

Spelling - the author misspelled Pier by adding a "t" to the end of the word. Do you have a copy of the family history by L. M. Peirce?

Mr. Church was born October 25, 1829, at Ferrisburg, Vermont. He came to California, via Panama, in the spring of 1850. He mined a short time at Horse Shoe Bend on the Merced river, and then went to Nelson Point on Nelson creek. He finally went to Downieville, and in 1851 was fluming the river. In the fall he began packing from Marysville, which he followed for ten years. He went east in 1859, returned in 1860, and located in Sierra valley; and has the oldest patent for land in the valley. He was married in Vermont, February 16, 1860 to Sarah Ellen Geer, daughter of Seth and Mary Geer, and by this union they have seven children; viz, Francis S., Charles Pease, Mary Piert, Charlotte Abbie, Albert B., Roxy E. J., and Harriett.

Hello,
I am also descended from Benjamin F. Church through his son John Marion who moved to Arkansas. Have you found anything about his parents? I have not been able to find information about who his family were either.
Please let me know if you find anything...
Thanks! Lyndee

As published in:
The Daily Gazette
Janesville, Wisconsin
July 9, 1900
Minerva J. Church was born in Orleans county, New York, May 12, 1839, and died in Milton Junction July 8, 1900. In 1846 her parents, Silas and Nancy Church, moved west settling in the town of Johnstown, and upon this homestead practically her whole life was spent. About five years ago she and her brother, Fred Church moved to Milton Junction where they have since resided.
Miss Church was a woman of rare qualities, kind of heart, a loving and devoted daughter and sister and an excellent neighbor. For many years she has presided over the household, ministering to the aged mother and the brother and her taking away has left a great sorrow in the home, and will be greatly missed by those who have known her as a friend and a neighbor. For two years her health has not been good, and at times her condition had been serious. Medical aid however, had seemed to relieve her, and for several weeks with the exception of the last few days before her death, she had appeared much improved. The change for the worse came on Saturday proceding her death and her vitality rapidly gave way until the end.
Besides her mother, the deceased leaves three brothers, Fred with whom she and her mother lives, George who lives in the town of Lima, and Orville, who resides in Janesville. Her father died in 1891.
The funeral was held at the home on Thursday afternoon July 5, conducted by Rev. Mr. Yancey, of Monroe, and was largely attended. The interment was in the Milton cemetery, the services at the grave being in charge of the Eastern Star, of which order Miss Church was a member.
