Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
This came to me from another mailing list I am on and I thought it was a
terrific thing. I am sure you are all like me and have spent hundreds
of hours
gathering information, it would be a shame to see it lost in the next
generation. Hope it does some good.

Hi All,
Thank you all for the intense interest sparked by my recent inquiry!
I became confused however since so many clicked 'reply' to my subject line
"Joel R. Church of N.Y. and Ohio" when in fact the follow-up had more to do with
an apparent gaggle of William Churchs from Connecticut, New Jersey and New
Hampshire, etc! I don't think any responded directly to my inquiry, but the
information shared is interesting!
I belong to lots of ROOTSWEB lists. I have found that clarifying my topic in
my subject line really helps connect with potential cousins both now in the
future.
Years from now someone beginning to research a shared family may search
archives, or just look at subject lines in a list -- I have made some valuable
connections since I learned to be very clear about my topic in the subject line.
Just my 2 cents.
In the meanwhile, I hope all you William searchers find success! If anyone
has an interest in my more contemporary William, perhaps you could e-mail me
off list. This is his family group:
1. JOEL R. CHURCH was born January 1820 in New York, and died March 05, 1860
in Dover Township, Lenawee, Michigan. He married SUSANNAH BRIANT HOWE
November 02, 1842 in Lucas County, Ohio, daughter of JAMES HOWE and CYNTHIA JACKSON.
She was born January 1821 in Dover-Foxcroft, Piscataquis, Maine.
Children of JOEL CHURCH and SUSANNAH HOWE are:
i. HELEN CHURCH, b. Abt. 1843, Ohio.
ii. WILLIAM LUCIUS CHURCH, b. October 1846, Lucas County, Ohio; d.
April 01, 1904, West Bay City, Bay, Michigan.
iii. EMMA CHURCH, b. Abt. 1848, Royalton, Fulton, Ohio.
iv. GEORGE CHURCH, b. Abt. 1852, Royalton, Fulton, Ohio.
v. FRANK CHURCH, b. Abt. 1855, Lenawee County, Michigan.
vi. ADA CHURCH, b. Abt. 1857, Lenawee County, Michigan.
Good luck to all related to common names like William!

John Church, the father of Joshua, was the son of Thomas
Church, born about 1740 and died about 1793. His sons
besides John include Robert, Phillip, Thomas A Church,Arter
Abram, and William. ( If there were a Benjamin in this family,
this is the first time I have heard that.)
Thomas Sr. and his three older sons are on the 1790 census
for Burke County, NC
Your Benjamin may be the brother to some other John Church. The woods was full of them.

Thanks for the information about John Church. My ancestor was Jane Church who was born 1807-1810. I know she married Solomon Ray in 1829 in Henry co Ga. I believe her father was Benjamin Church born 1763 in Rowan Co NC and was the brother of John Church. Jane Church named her first child Elizabeth and her second child Silas Benjamin Ray and their third child John. If you have any information about Benjamin Church born 1763 and the names of his children please email me. Thanks, Ross

John Church was not on the 1820 census in NC because he
and his family had moved to TN and settled in Lincoln Co Tn
around 1816. He had one son Joshua who was on the 1810
census in Haywood Co NC and he also moved to LiCoTn. The
NC census will show that John had the one son and several
girls. I do not know the names of any of Joshua's sisters.
John and Joshua both died in 1827 in TN. I do not know the
name of John's wife. Joshua married a Priscilla ????
Beth, could you tell us what you do know about your William Church of
Amenia? Do you know whom he married, what his children's names were,
what dates he lived, etc.?

Thanks to all who gave such a prompt reply for my William Church query. As
for the question that all ask about any connection to any other Church -
that is the major problem. I have not found any connection with any other
Churches in Hartford or anywhere. I've had extensive studies of all the
other Churches in Hartford at that time who might have had some familial
relationship with William to absolutely no result. As someone has said,
William was not a "Hartford Church" name and the same goes for Fannie.
Another asked question: there is no upstate NY connection that I can find
except for one of William's daughters who married a Franklin Boles of
Poughkeepsie, NY. About four other kids moved to Missouri in the early 1800s
it seems. Based on what you folks have provided, I have some new sources to
research in RI, and elsewhere. If anything of value comes up, this list
will be the first to know. Anything else that anyone else finds would be
most appreciated. Cheers, Dick B.

The Capt. Charles Church who married Francis Turner, was the son of Capt.
Charles Church & Mary Pope. Charles #2 was b. 1710 @ Plymouth, Mass and d. 6 May
1762. He married Francis in 1735.
Lemuel Church was b. 11 June 1792 & d. 1872. He is the son of Joseph Church &
Sarah Brightman. (Joseph being the son of Capt. Charles #2.) He married Ann
Winans in 1815. She was b. 1800 & d. 1879. They are both buried at Johnson
Cemetery, Berrien Ct., MI - just outside of Niles city limits.
Gnanse
Well, they are the Mayflower ones. Long story short:
Richard Warren's daughter, Eliz. marries Richard Church
Nathaniel Church (Brother of Col. Benji) m. Sarah Barstow
Capt. Charles Church m. Mary Pope
Capt. Charles Church (II) m. Francis Turner
Joseph Church m. Sarah Brightman
Lemuel Church m. Ann Winans (It has been published that this Lemuel married a
Betsey Simmons. I've even received a list of their supposed children) I have
however, confirmed that, this Lemuel married Ann Winans as they are buried
together in Michigan. He may have married a Betsey Simmoms, may have even had
kids with her - HOWEVER, the birthdates clash with those of the kids he had with
Ann. It is more likely that the Betsey Simmons referred to is of another
Church related family. I have somewhere in my notes, info on her that almost solves
and explains, I believe, how the original mistake might have been made - but
I don't have it in front of me at this time. Anyone else interested, is free
to email me about it. (Sorry about the long winded rant, but the 1913 published
mistake is still floating around out there as fact and it simply isn't.)
continuing the line-
Laura Ann Church m. Myers Nelson
Frank Jefferson Nelson m. Etta Eliz. Painter
Byron G. Nelson m. Olive Turpin
Earl Milo Nelson m. Mildred V. Clark
I'm their youngest child, Gnanse Nelson.
Hello Maureen:
You might find a Michigan Church connection in the Berien area (southwest
corner of the state) my Church line went from R.I. to OH (married into the Nelson
family) and then moved on to that area of Michigan.
Gnanse
Hi Maureen -- I'm on this list because I have had a severe problem in
trying to locate an ancestor, one William Church from Hartford, CT, and
seeing your mention of Fannie Church from Hartford leads me to ask some
questions, if I may. My William was born about 1778 in Hartford (maybe).
He was married there in 1803 or so to Helen Olcott of Hartford. Their
daughter Nancy married my gr gr grandfather Ira McL. Bidwell in 1826 in
Hartford. William died in Hartford in January 1836. There were a bunch of
Churches in Hartford at that time, but there is zero mention of William in
any context. He just appeared from somewhere. I am just now looking into
whether he might have come from Rhode Island since I have seen some evidence
that some Churches from RI did migrate to CT.
If you know of anything that just might shed a little light on William, I
would be most appreciative.
Cheers, Dick Bidwell

I'll take any Williams anyone has for that period. But even more
significantly, do any of the Williams in question have a close familial
relationship with a Samuel Church?
Fannie's third son was named Samuel Church Hooker, and I suspect that
the name was given wholesale--that Samuel Church was someone important
in Fannie's life. If we can find a William Church with a Samuel in his
family tree, this would be a place to look for a daughter whose nickname
might have been Fannie.
P.S. to Richard: There is an odd silence in my family's information
about Fannie Church's family. She married into a very voluble family
who were quite eager to share their history, yet there is complete
silence about Fannie's family. I suppose it could have been because the
Churches from whom she sprang didn't matter because they weren't from
Hartford, and I don't like to consider the idea of a scandal, but I have
considered that possibility, as well. Any ideas?

Thank you, Gnanse! This further strengthens the RI theory put forth by
Richard. Could you tell me more about your Churches in RI?

Hello Maureen:
You might find a Michigan Church connection in the Berien area
(southwest
corner of the state) my Church line went from R.I. to OH (married into
the Nelson
family) and then moved on to that area of Michigan.

I have a Fannie Church who moved to Lucas County, Ohio from Hartford,
Connecticut via Bennington, New York, around 1840. She and her husband,
Nathaniel Eggleston Hooker, lived in several villages in Lucas County
during her lifetime.
The family had connections in Michigan, as they traveled there fairly
frequently, but I don't know exactly where they were going or whom they
went there to visit. Fannie had in-laws who lived in Charlotte,
Michigan, and one photograph of Fannie's father-in-law was taken in
Detroit.

Greetings,
I am researching my husband's family. His great grandfather was William
Lucius Church (b. October, 1846 in Lucas County, Ohio), son of Joel R.
Church (b. January 1820 in New York). The family can be found on 1850
census in Royalton, Fulton County, Ohio, and then moved to Dover
Township outside of Adrian, Michigan in Lenawee County around 1854.
Joel died there on March 5, 1860.
William was a veteran of the Civil War (47th Regiment of the Ohio
Infantry, Company B). This company of volunteers were all from Adrian,
Michigan - they became part of the Ohio Infantry after organizing
themselves because the state of Michigan could not field another company
of volunteers.
We must be researching the same CHURCHs.

I was very thrilled to find your posting to the CHURCH list on Ancestry.com today. I am researching my husband's family. His great grandfather was William Lucius Church, son of Joel R. Church. William, a veteran of the Civil War (47th Regiment of the Ohio Infantry, Company B), was born in Lucas County, Ohio but the family moved to Royalton Township, Fulton County, Ohio and then to Lenawee County, Michigan.
I know we are talking about the same CHURCHs. Let's talk!

Thank you for your reply but I think we may be searching two different Cyrenus Church families. My Cyrenus was born about 1793. He married Phoebe Harrington and lived in Vermont. The children I know of are Morey Harrington b. 1814 VT; John Wesley b 1819 Ontario Co NY married Maria Beach; Sophronia b 1820 NY married Amos Beach Jr.
Other siblings of Cyrenus are Sarah b 1789 and Samuel b 1803.
Cyrenus' name also appears on a probate record for my ggggrandfather Samuel Alanson Church (died 1864) he married Marrilla Beach.
Please let me know if this is helpful or if you have any questions.
