Looking for my ggrandmother Mollie W. Church's father's hometown in NY and any info about him. This is Mollie's history that I have so far (back to her mother and grandmother). Also would be interested as to what happened to Mollie's brother and sister and any other relative.
(1) Margaret Ashcraft
Birth Date: abt 1813
Birth Place: OH, USA
In the1880 census Margaret is listed as M. Ashcraft and widowed so possibly either Ashcraft was her maiden name which she returned to or she remarried an Ashcraft who later died and she was going by this second husband’s name. Since her daughter Mary is indicated in the 1860 MO census as a "Walsh" it is assumed that Margaret Ashcroft’s married name was at one time Margaret Walsh.
(2) Mary Walsh
Birth Date: abt 1837
Birth Place: OH, USA
Occ: Florist
Spouse: William R. Church
Birth Date: abt 1822
Birth Place: NY, USA
Death Date: bef 1880, age: 58
Occ: Wagon Maker
Children: Julia Ida (~1854-)
Mollie W. (~1857-)
Frank (Francis?) (~1861-)
(3) Mollie W. Church
Birth Date: abt Jun 1857
Birth Place: Westport, MO, USA
Birth Memo: Jackson Co., MO 1860 census Westport, p. 127 shows Mollie as 3 years old.
The 1900 Census for Kenton County lists Mollie as born in June 1859 in Missouri and indicate her Father was born in New York and Mother born in Kentucky. However, given the 1860 census for Westport MO shows her as 3 she must have been born in 1857. Her mother is shown from Louisiana in the 1860 and 1870 censuses so this is probably the correct state for her. Covington, KY Directories, 1890, 1892 indicate that Mollie lived at 64 Chestnut, Newport, KY in 1890. The same source shows her husband, James Allen Culbertson, lived at 528 Montgomery, Covington KY in 1892.
Spouse: James Allen Culbertson
Children: Earl Church (1898-1970)
Luella ("Lou") (1882-)
Ida M. (1881-)
Harold M. (1893-1959)
Grace Pearl (1879-)

I descend from Seth Church, the problem in this line is the duplicity of Lydia Randalls. The first I believe is an error. The Lydia of William and Hannah was born in 1709/10 in Rochester and she married in 1731 Joseph b. 1712. An article in the Mayflower #14(as I recall) page 185 suggests the previous # 544 Joseph's wife was a Bethia(Pierce) who then married John Hurst. Well I have that marriage record and cannot interperate Church from it! Where the Pierce name came in I do not know either the source was not named unfortunatly.
Hello, If your info is re Charles CHURCH b 1740, m 1762, Lillas Brown of
Swansea MA. I have the info. If not this CHURCH I would dearly like to
share. Thanks, nightsong(a)att.net

My grandfather was Homer Cleveland Church. If you are, do you have postings of your family on Myfamily.com?

Does anybody have any history of any Church family members who chose to stay loyal to Britain and decided to move to Canada in the 1700's. John Church died in Calabogie Ontario Canada in 1790 and it is said he came from the USA. Any help would be appreciated. Jim Church
Hi CHURCH listers,
Once a year I post this information in hopes that someone will recognize the name and help me with information. I have hit a Hoover Dam size wall with this one!
James Church b. bet. 1832-1835 in CT. No parents are known. He married Mary Elizabeth Dorrance in 1857 in Sterling, CT. They had two sons, Charles Uriah Church b. 1859 and John Herbert Church, b. 1861. James and Mary lived in E. Providence (area) of RI and then divorced in 1873. I have the court records for this divorce. James had abandoned the family at this point and was believed to have returned to CT. Mary won the case with James in abstantia. She also received full custody of the boys.
I found a James Church living in Norwich, CT. He had remarried to Martha (Mattie) Johnson. She was a widower with 4 children. This James and Martha had a son, Ansel, who died young. This James also fought in the Civil War with the CT 5th regiment infantry. I have obtained this James' military files and found that he married a 3rd time to another widower when Mattie died. This James died in Westford and is buried there. In all of his papers, he never mentioned being married to Mary or having his two sons. This could be an omission on purpose, so she didn't inherit his military pension, but it also doesn't give me an affirmative link that this is my James.
If anyone has information on this character, I would be deeply appreciative.
Thank you,
Leslie

Joseph Rosbotham, was widowed and married twice more, (I am from this line)Joseph,b1638, Benjamin 1639,m. Alice Southwarth(Gov. Bradford's step-daughter) Nathaniel 20 Sept 1640, Caleb 8 /aug, 1647, Abigail 22 Jun 1647, all list Plymouth Colony but at that time Duxbury, Hingham and parts of Rhode Island(Little Compton, Bristol,) were all part of Plymouth colony. I am looking for more information on the family, especially about Joseph Rosbotham. In Little Compton near the grave of Col Benjamin Church(son of Richard and Elizabeth) there are the graves of Caleb d. Sept 30,1825/6, and his wife Sal!
ly B. died Sept 20,1855 age 68yo. Her name might be Sarah as Sally is a nick name for Sarah.. There were a lot of other stones but only could make out Church, no dates, there are three children buried between Alice /church and a Thomas Church, two are very small crpts, the other of med size. These are all in Little Compton, R.Is/ Jeanne
Thank you for your input. Yes, it is possible there was a divorce. I didn't
really rule it out but it was not too frequent in those days.

I have no information on your great grandfather, but from my own
experience I can tell you that perhaps he and your great grandmother
divorced, unless of course you have evidence contrary to that. My g-g
grandparents divorced in the 1860s, and both remarried in the 1860s.

Can anybody relate to the following people? This is the extent of my knowledge of them:
My great grandfather was George W. Church who was born in Milwaukee in 1844. His wife, my great grandmother, married again in 1875 so we almost have to presume he died at an early age. Her maiden name was Ellen Burdick.
George W.'s father was George Church who was born in New York. His wife's name was Melissa.
In the Milwaukee 1859 Directory the following Churches were listed:
Andrew Church, laborer
Benjamin Church, carpenter
George Church, M & M R R (possibly George W.'s father?)
Ralph Church, M. C. Cook & Co.
Samuel Church, clk M & M R R
Any help would be appreciated.

I just came across my posting from 1999 and laughed at how little I knew at that time! I have discovered quite a bit about the Church family since then. In answer to my own questions about Alfred Church and Rachel Church Dancy: I found the bastardy bond in the NC archives in Raleigh. The father of Alfred Church was Richard Wheeler (spelled Wheelor in the bond). Rachel married Isham Dancy a few years later.
