Well Jim I believe we are related somehow, your descendents of Richard &
Ann settled in the same neighborhood in Upper Canada as mine.
The problem being is we do not know who the Grandfather of Oliver Church
Jr. is. We know his father is Oliver Church and his mother is Margaret
Pangborn, and that everyone claims to be born in Vermont. But the history
writers through me off for a while when he claimed Oliver Jr. was born in
Danbury Vt., which is not in Vermont, so I think he meant Danby which
someone wrote is often mistaken for Danbury. I would love to see what
information you have and maybe we can make a connection. You help me and I
will help you, I am all for that idea.<LOL>

Re: the confusion between Danby, VT and Danbury, CT....
I'm not related to this line, but as a Social Studies teacher, I know that
towns and counties are often re-named, or even (sigh) die out. Is it
possible that there _used_ to be a Danbury, VT, that has since "died,"
been absorbed into another township or simply been re-named?
Just throwing the thought out there, in case I'm the first one to think of
that possibility. (Not likely, but possible). :) Good luck!

I am looking for information on the Church's of Danby Vt. and I believe
the Smith family was from there as well. I am looking for Oliver Church Jr.
born July 3, 1794, the historians claim he was born in Danbury Vermont.
Since there is not Danbury Vermont I am assuming he meant Danby Vt. I do
not think it was Danbury Connecticutt since Oliver Jr.'s parents both claim
to be from Vermont in all the Census records in Canada and Oliver Sr.'s
other son William's death registration also claims his parents were from
Vermont. I do not think that the children would claim their parents or the
parents would claim they were from Vermont when they were actually from
Connecticut. Any help on the Danby area would be very much appreciated.
There were also a Nathaniel Church living in Hadley who I believe is
related somehow but I can't make a connection until I can find my Church's
in Vermont. At this time we have no idea where my Church's lived and this
is the only clue we know about them.
I am looking for information on the family of Lodema Theodora Church, born 11
Jan 1859 at Highgate, VT. She married Ellery Denois Lasell on 26 Sep 1878 at
Highgate.
Lodema's parents were William Church who was married to Harriet (Hannah?????).
Would appreciate any info on William and Harriet.
Thanks, Don

Hi fellow searchers. I have a copy of an old lawsuit involving a Mary
Augusta Clark(nee Church) who died without children, parents, siblings, and
no will. She was married to William H. Clark and her property was in
Brooklyn, New York and all her descendants got a piece of the pie. My mother
was one of them. The property was divided amongst many paternal aunts,
uncles and cousins. My mother's grandmother was Nancy Spaulding(nee Church)
and through this lawsuit I have found that my ancestor was Samuel Church,
born Aug.16, 1761 in Hardwick, Worchester, Mass. He married Clarissa Smith
and the best I can determine their children were: George Nelson, John
Kilborn, Thomas Jefferson, Samuel, Rodney Smith, Ann, Emily, Clarissa and
perhaps, Elizabeth. My interest is in Ann Church who I believe from the
lawsuit is Nancy Spaulding. I have married names for the other females.
See was born about 1815 in either New York or Vermont, it seems. Also, does
anyone know of Mary Augusta Church born about 1840 lived in Brooklyn, New
York and died in 1911. These two ladies are very elusive. Please help if
anyone can. Ruth.
Seeking information on the following family, and hoping it is possible that
descendants may still be living:
Leroy Church b abt 1870 Athens, Greene Co NY
wife: Mary Ford mother of 5, with 2 still living in 1910:
children: Alice Church b abt 1904 and Edward CHurch b 1910.
Thank you for any information!

Yes, I have run across Aaron Church and Nancy Owens. Although, my
information on Aaron is limited. Bill Hickok may be able to assist you on
this family, as we talked earlier today per Aaron Church. Bill, can you
help? Also, mercymarcy(a)gbso.net (mercymarcy) is working on this line.
Below is information shared by Marcy & Bill. I have not researched this
information myself, therefore you may want to ask for sources.

Hi Jim---
I'm really trying to get to "know" all of the various Church families
descended from Richard of Hartford. I know my Fannie (b. c. 1809) is in
there somewhere (I did NOT mean that as a double entendre).
Interestingly, one of the top candidates as Fannie's ancestor is the same
Church line you're looking at (according to your web page---which is
terrific, by the way!). The emphasis on Canada had sort of thrown me off in
list discussions, and I hadn't paid much attention, but when I looked at the
info on the web, I could see that we might indeed be looking at the same
group (one common denominator right off is that they were lousy
record-keepers!).
THE NAME FANNIE: The first bit of evidence is, of course, the given name
Fannie. It occurs in the family of Nathaniel Church (b. 1748) who m. (2)
Dorcas Austin 1759. Their eighth child is Fannie (b. 1798) on at least one
version of this family, though she may appear as Frances on other versions.
This is a great clue, as it's very likely that my Fannie could be a niece or
cousin to these Churches. Almost all of the Churches (like my other
Hartford-based families) I've looked at seem to be very traditional in their
naming patterns, honoring living or deceased relatives by naming a child
after them. I would guess that Fannie is no exception.
SAMUEL THE DOCTOR: Another family that's making a return engagement in my
files as a possibly good candidate is that of Joseph Church (b. 1727),
brother of Nathaniel. Joseph's son was Dr. Samuel Church of Sunderland MA
who m. Sabra Farnum. They had a daughter b. 1809 named---Fanny. The
Ancestral File shows her as having been married to two men named Graves, but
I may see if I can find enough to challenge that information. She certainly
does fit the criteria for my Fannie-including the father named Samuel and
the father who was a doctor (Fannie's father-in-law was a doctor in
Hartford).
WILLIAM HARRISON: Since Fannie had seven sons, naming is one of the clues
I'm working with (I have little else!). For a long time, I had thought that
the given name Samuel Church Hooker for Fannie's third son was the biggest
billboard in the family. Now, however, as I see how William Harrison (b.
Hadley 1753) fits into the overall picture, I realize that he could be
Fannie's ancestor. Fannie's first son was named William Wallace (no idea
where the second name comes from). Neither name has anything to do with the
family of Fannie's husband, Nathaniel Eggleston Hooker. Fannie's second son
was Lemuel (no idea about that name!) Harrison. I do wish there were more
information on him. Do you suppose he might have gone out to Ohio? That
is, in fact, where Fannie ended up after her marriage, and while she is said
to have been born in Hartford, I can find no records in all of CT to support
that notion.
Sorry for the lengthy term paper here. This is only a fraction of what I'm
thinking, but I wanted to let you know there are others of us out here who
are looking at the same group. Perhaps if we keep pursuing each of our
little pictures, we'll be able to knit together a pretty good big picture,
eventually.
Maureen Girard
P.S. Here are the given names of Fannie Church Hooker's sons, in case any
strikes a bell of recognition: William Wallace, Lemuel Harrison, Samuel
Church, Calvin, Nathaniel Eggleston II, George and Edward. Only Nathaniel
Eggleston can be tied to the Hooker family, and I suspect that Samuel Church
is directly tied to the Church family, either as the father or grandfather
of Fannie.
Sorry I forgot to change the subject.

Col. Church was "Traitor" Benjamin's great grandfather. Col Benjamin Church
was also Richard Church of Plymouth and Elizabeth Warren's son. Below are
notes from John A. Church's book:

22 May, 1682, and at the same time Selectman of the town. Commissioned as
magistrate with authority to celebrate marriages 7 July, 1682, his name is
found frequently in the local records. He was one of eight original members
of the First Cong. Church at Bristol, 1687. In 1696 or7 he rem. to Freetown,
now Fall River, with his brother Caleb. Together they bought a majority
interest in the water power upon which the important industries of that city
have been founded since. The next year he bought his brother's half and
built a saw mill and a grist mill, which he sold, 18 Sept., 1714 to Richard
and Joseph Borden. He rem. in 1705 to Little Compton, where he had settled
at his marriage. He helped establish a church there and was chosen Deputy to
the Colonial Court. His grandson says he left a large estate in each of
these places. He received no reward for his services against the Indians or
the French and Indians, but in 1734, 16 years after his death, 500 acres of
land near Rehoboth, Mass., were allotted to his heirs.
He left no will and his widow was appointed administratrix 5 Mar.,
1717-8. The settlement is recorded in the Bristol County records at Taunton,
Mass. The inventory of his estate appears to be 353 pounds, but he had given
land and buildings, stock and a mill to his five living children at various
times. Among other things the inventory has: Sword and belt 5 pounds; cane
and gloves 12s; wearing apparel 28 pounds 15s; 2 gold rings and 3 pair
buttons 2 pounds 10s; 42 ounces plate 25 pounds; Negro man and bedding 60
pounds; Negro woman 40 pounds; servant boy Wm. Heard, 10 pounds; 120 1/2
acres of land in Tiverton 180 pounds. The sword is said to have been used by
his descendant George Church. (History of Duxbury, Life of Col. Benj.
Church.)

BENJAMIN CHURCH. The death of Benjamin Church (Elizabeth Warren, Richard)
was noticed in "The Boston News-Letter" of "monday February 3. 1718", as
follows:
"Little-Compton, January 18. Yesterday the 17th Currant, The Honourable
Col. Benjamin Church, Esq; Riding out to his Farm, his horse stumbled and he
fell, pitched upon his Head and Shoulders, was immediately taken up and
carryed to the next House, but never spoke a word after, but it's thought by
the motions and signs he made, that he had his Senses, and Died about six
hours after, in the 78th Year of his Age. He was a true lover of his Country
and approved himself so, by venturing his Life so often in it's Defence in
the several Wars, & many Services he has done for it, as also in his
Stedfast adherence to it's Interest in times of Temptations to the contrary;
a Gentleman also that has been a great Friend and Incourager of Virtue and
Religion, especially in this corner of the Province, where Providence
disposed the bounds of his Habitation."
>From the publication NEHGR, vol., 5, 3 July 1851, page 358:
Benjamin Church's tombstone inscription:
"Here lieth Interred the Body of the Honourable Col. Beniamin Church, Esq
who departed this life January the 17th 1717-8 in ye 78 year of his age."
Notes for Alice Southworth:
>From the publication NEHGR, vol., 5, 3 July 1851, page 358:
Alice Church's tombstone inscription:
"Here lyeth the Body of Alice Church Late wife to the Honourable Col.
Beniamin Church Esq. She Deceast March ye 5th A.C. 1718-9 in ye 73 year of
her age."
More About Alice Southworth:
Fact 1: death date from Earle Peckham.
Children of Benjamin Church and Alice Southworth are:
i. Thomas Church, born 1673 in Duxbury, MA; died March 12, 1745/46 in
Little Compton, RI; married (1) Sarah Hayman February 21, 1697/98; born
August 22, 1675; married (2) Edith Woodman April 16, 1712; born September
07, 1685; died June 03, 1718; married (3) Sarah Horsewell October 03, 1719
in Hingham, Mass; born August 11, 1694; died April 22, 1768.
Notes for Thomas Church:
He was selectman for 25 years from 1717. He was a carpenter. He was the son
to whom Col. Benjamin dictated his Entertaining History of King Philip's
War. Benjamin being the first, Thomas was the second author to arise in the
Church family. He wrote a history of the expeditions his father commanded in
the French and Indian wars. He does not appear to have taken part in them as
did his brothers Constant and Edward. Undoubtedly the son of Col. Benjamin
Church was often employed in military and other public affairs and the
following letter to "the Hon'rable Wm. Dummer Esq Lef't Governor etc.
Boston" gives a glimpse of the difficulties under which military operations
labored. (N.E. Reg. 46 - 156.)
"Sr. In pursuent to an order Rec'd from your Hon'r. bearing Date the
18th. cuttant, to enlist thirty able bodied Indians for His Maj. sarvice in
the Eastern Fronteres: on Satterday morning I Sett out for Boston & since
have notified all the Indians in Little Compton and the south part of
Tiverton to meet me this day, by twelve of the Clock, att the place
appointed, which they Did, Tho not all, for some ill minded person had told
them that there was to be a press. Notwithstanding about forty men appeared,
and after I had treete them by Argument and Drink soficient thay Came to
this Result, that if your Hon'r see cause to Commissionate an officer to
command the as they should Lick, then thay ware redy & willing to sarve your
Hon'r & there Country" Dated Little Compton 21 June 1725.
Rum was the great recruiting officer in those days and Col. Benjamin
often had cause to complain that the authorities failed to reimburse him for
his expenses in treating his men three times a day while holding them in
camp.
His will is recorded at Taunton, 16 Apr., 1746, Inv. 2667 pounds, 10s
6d. besides plate 240 pounds, the "Neck Farm" and other real estate. His
widow Sarah (Horsewell) left her grandson Francis Bailey 100 pounds, to
grandson Benjamin Church Great Bible, to grandson Francis Wilbour 100
pounds, to granddaughters gowns; remainder to Thomas Church, Sarah Bailey,
Mary Wilbour and Mercy Richmond. (Little Compton RI records.)
ii. Constant Church, born May 12, 1676; died March 09, 1726/27; married
Patience Cook; born 1698; died January 17, 1764 in Newport, RI.
Notes for Constant Church:
Constant accompanied his father in two expeditions against the French and
Indians, being commissioned Captain by the Governor and Council.
Commissioned coroner for Bristol Co. 10 Dec., 1718. He was drowned with his
cousin Capt. Charles Church, son of Nathaniel, in the bay opposite the
present city of Fall River. His inventory 3 April 1727, was for 5,120
pounds; lands and buildings 4,200 pounds; purse and apparel 18 pounds 5s;
books 1 pound 10s; Negro 90 pounds, Indian man 20 pounds. The record of his
will calls him "late of Tiverton." He is said to have "much resembled his fa
ther." Constant and Charles, with whom he died, and Nathaniel and Martha,
children of Constant, are buried in an old graveyard on the main road
between Fall River and Freetown where a church stood formerly. It was
accepted by the town of Freetown in 1714 and stood nearly 100 years.
iii. Benjamin Church, born 1678.
4 iv. Edward Church, born 1680; died 1707; married Martha Burton.
v. Col. Charles Church, born May 09, 1682; died January 1746/47; married
Hannah Paine May 20, 1703 in Congregational Church, Bristol, RI; born April
20, 1685; died 1755.
Notes for Col. Charles Church:
According to John A. Church in "The Descendants of Richard Church of
Plymouth," Col. Charles Church and Hannah Paine were married at Bristol, RI,
and were members of the Congregational Church. The religious history of the
family was somewhat belated for the wife was baptized in Bristol, July 29,
1722, Capt. Charles 3 Aug., and six children 5 Aug., of the same year. He
was Lieut. when he married, Capt. when he was baptized, and Col. when his
daughter Mary married in 1746. These titles were not complimentary merely
for he accompanied his distinguished father on two of his expeditions
against the French and Indians. He filled a number of important civil
offices, Representative, Sheriff of the County, field driver, assessor of
taxes, etc. He served with Capt. William Throope as commissioner to survey
and lay out 600 acres of undivided land in Bristol Co., Deposition 18 Nov.,
1737. He was on the committee appointed to lay out the town of Ashburnham.
Mass. His house in Bristol was standing in 1848. His will gives to wife
Hannah among other things a Negro woman and boy and certain buildings on
Mrs. Elizabeth Vernon's land "which I build for a calash (coach) house and
to grind chocolate in." His estate amounted to1153 pounds 3 shillings 6 d,
much of it in land some of which he left to the Church of Christ in Bristol
for the support of the Gospel "in the Presbyterian or Congregational way."
He seems to have had luxurious ways for his wearing apparel was inventoried
at 70 pounds and he left 70 oz. 16pwt. of silver, 76 pounds of pewter, a
Negro woman and two girls valued together at 320 pounds, besides "Negroes
Rhino, Dido and Rebecca." His wife also disposed of a large estate when she
died, 8 years after her husband. Her daughters Dorothy, Sarah and Mary
received 600 pounds each, and granddaughter Hannah 300 pounds. The total
value was 2,439 pounds 8 shillings 4 d. (Bristol, RI records.)
vi. Elizabeth Church, born March 26, 1684; died 1739; married (1) Capt.
Joseph Rothbotham 1700; married (2) John Sampson September 11, 1717; died
January 12, 1733/34; married (3) Capt. Samuel Woodbury June 18, 1739.
Notes for Capt. Joseph Rothbotham:
Also seen ans Rosbotham, in "The Life of Colonel Benjamin," Elizabeth's
father, the spelling is Rothbotham.
vii. Nathaniel Church, born July 01, 1686 in Bristol, Mass.; died February
28, 1686/87.
viii. Martha Church, born 1688.
Notes for Martha Church:
Martha probably died early in life. The only trace we have of her is her
signature to the settlement of her father's estate. The History of King
Philip's War speaks of Mrs. Rothbotham as only surviving daughter.
10. Stephen Burton He married 11. Abigail.
11. Abigail
Child of Stephen Burton and Abigail is:
5 i. Martha Burton, born August 1677; died April 14, 1750; married Edward
Church.
RICHARD OF PLYMOUTH by John Adams Church cites the following about Edward
Church, "Traitor" Benjamin's grandfather:
4. Edward Church, born 1680; died 1707. He was the son of 8. Col.
Benjamin Church and 9. Alice Southworth. He married 5. Martha Burton.
5. Martha Burton, born August 1677; died April 14, 1750. She was the
daughter of 10. Stephen Burton and 11. Abigail.
Notes for Edward Church:
The name of Edward's wife has been erroneously given as Brenton. Brenton was
the family name of her mother. (Mayflower Descendants, X:56 - 59.) Her will
styles him mariner. She was appointed administratrix 7 Feb., 1707, but did
not report until Feb., 1720-1, apparently delaying until the death of Col.
Benjamin obliged her to put her appointment on record in order to receive
her husband's share of his father's estate. Edward Church was commissioned
Captain. He served with his father in the 5th expedition against the French
and Indians. He lived first in Bristol, RI, where it was voted, 1 May 1702,
"that he have the privilege of building a pew where room shall present." The
inventory of his estate was for 694 pounds, 18s, including a farm of 200
acres, 600 pounds. He seems to have been an active and enterprising man.
Bristol, RI records.)
Children of Edward Church and Martha Burton are:
i. Abigail Church, born March 04, 1702/03; married George Wanton May 23,
1727 in Trinity Church, Newport, RI.
2 ii. Dea. Benjamin Church, born October 08, 1704; died October 10, 1781;
married (1) Elizabeth Viall October 26, 1726; married (2) Hannah Dyer March
06, 1730/31 in Boston, MA.
6. Giles Dyer
Child of Giles Dyer is:
3 i. Hannah Dyer, died March 1794; married Dea. Benjamin Church March 06,
1730/31 in Boston, MA.
Hello Jim,
Forgive me if I missed previous information. To which Samuel and which book
are you referring? Your subject line mentions Benjamin. I'm confused.
Thanks,
