Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
Here are some quotes from the above mentioned books. Maybe it will help us
understand the two Church families. These are direct quotes and nothing has
been changed.
page 12
A memorial was sent to His Majesty's Treasurer on August 1st, 1784, by
ship, concerning the allotment of rations to the Loyalist refugees.
Haldimand had taken it upon himself to increase rations, but the lack of
flour was severely felt. Provisions for Quebec were being ordered to
Halifax. The Memorial was signed by the officers of the Front who first
settled on Cataraqui 3:
George Singleton, Captain; James Rogers, Major; Thomas Gummersall,
Captain; Hazelton Spencor, Lt.; T. Thompson, Ensign: Oliver Church, Lt;
William McKay, Lt.' Wm. Fraser, Adjutant; W.R. Crawford, Captain; John
Howard, Lt.; J. Ferguson, Lt.; Also signing were Michael Grass, Captain;
John Stuart, Chaplain, KRR NY; and Edward Jessup, Major; and others.
page 18
Major Ross had several houses built at Cataraqui. Among the first residents
of Kingston were three officers awaiting settlement along the front of
Township No. 3 - Lieutenant John Howard who drew Lot 25, Lieutenant Oliver
Church, Lot 20, and Sgt. Major John Howell , Lot 16. They spent the winter
in these houses with the agreement to return them to the Quebec government
in the spring.
John Richards second child, Jemima married Lieutenant Oliver Church, of
the 2nd battalion, and with their five-month-old daughter, Elizabeth, spent
the winter of 1784-85 in Cataraqui(Kingston).
Page 19
John Richards' youngest daughter, Margaret, on the roll of inhabitants of
Cataraqui, was living there with her sister and brother-in-law, Oliver and
Jemima Church. Margaret married Lieutenant Spencer in 1788. Spencer was
also with the 2nd battalion (KRR NY) and later farmed on the 200 acres
granted Margaret's father John Richards in 1784. The deed was issued to the
Spencers in 1798, but they may have been on the property before that.
Spencer had originally drawn the west half of Lot 20, with Lieutenant
Oliver Church on the east half; the two sisters would have been close
neighbours. But Spencer's life took a different turn. He had slaves to do
his work.........
page 47
There were no mills on the Front or any means to generate water power.
Lieutenant Oliver Church reported grinding a little grain by hand. The
nearest mill at Cataraqui was 25 miles distant and the round trip took a week.
page 80
Oliver Church, was one of the earliest innkeepers on the Front, on the east
half og Lot 19. In 1817 he sold to Duncan McKenzie of Kingston, also an
innkeeper, possibly a son-in-law. This would later become the Craven
property, one of the archaeological sites mentioned in the first chapter.

Lot 20 West - Lieutenant Oliver Church of Brattleboro Vermont. Born 1756.
Served in the QLR's in 1777 and was a senior Lieutenant in 2nd Batallion
KRR NY in 1781 as a secret service scout. His wife Jemimah was born 1767.

According to The History Of Leeds and Grenville Oliver Sr. came to
Canada in 1805, if that is true then the children except of William whom we
can prove was born in Canada were perhaps all born in the U.S. If they were
born in Canada does anyone have dates? I am open to suggestions on this. I
have also seen research that show Jeremiah Richard Church is the son of
Oliver Church and Mary Clute, which is the other Church family(Loyalist)
and yet according to Jeremiah's war record and his marriage licence he was
the son of Oliver and Rhoda which would put him in Oliver and Margaret's
family and no relation to the loyalists that I have seen, this has been
disputed by some, but I don't see where Oliver and Margaret are Loyalists.
Did Oliver and Mary have a Jeremiah in their family, and if so what is his
family? We all seem to agree on Oliver Church Jr.'s(Oliver & Margaret) was
born in the U.S. but what is there to prove the other children were not. Or
was Leavitt confused in some way's on the Oliver's in which there were a
number of them in Upper Canada. Do we know anything that can link the two
Church families together other than they seem to be exchanging children
every once in a while, it appears Basil and Mary Ann's daughter is living
with Oliver Jr.(Oliver & Margaret's son) and his second wife Catherine even
though they don't seem to be related that is shown.

Jim Church
I have a Lyman, but I think he might be a cousin as he was born in 1829. His
father Seth was buried in Castile, Wyoming Co, NY, in 1840. This line goes
back to Richard of Hartford. Possibly you're looking for one of Seth's
brothers. Unfortunatley I'm looking for them too!

I have a Cylindia Church, dau. of Willard E. Church and Johanna Davis,
born Nov. 26, 1832. These Churches originated in Mass., N.Y., Conn, & Vt.
I am trying to find information on my grandfather, William Herbert Church.
>From a funeral home in Carlisle, PA where he lived I have obtained some
information. He was born April 30, 1857 and died July 24, 1927. His father
was born in MA and was Charles Church, his mother also born in MA and was
Mary Chadwick. He married Charlotte Whitaker (Whittaker) and they moved from
Lee. MA to Carlisle, PA where he ran a general store and farmed. Charlotte
Whitaker imigrated from England with her parents when she was about 8 years
old according to stories she told me. I do not know the names of her
parents.
My grandparents had 2 children, William Herbert (or perhaps Herbert William)
who was a Captain in the US Army during World War II and who died in
Milwaukee Wisc. in 1947, just months before his only children were born in a
second marriage. Twins were born in Dec. 1947 named Marjorie Ann and William
Herbert Church. I have tried unsucessfully to contact either of the twins in
recent years, as contact with the family was lost after the twins were about
10 years old. My aunt had remarried.
The other child was my mother, Iva Mae Church. She was born January 8, 1894
and died in Detroit MI, April 8, 1943. She married George E. Sands, August
18, 1928. There were 2 children born, myself and my younger sister, Marjorie
Anne. I am interested in gathering any additional information about both
grandparents as not much was known about my mother's family due to her early
death.

Got this off the Rootsweb board, looks like one of Richard and Ann
descendents because of the St. Lawrence County where I believe the Loyalist
Church's settled. Maybe if you have anything you could let her and the list
know know or post it into the Rootsweb board if you have anything on them.
I don't know if she is a member of the Church List. Any ideas people?

Dear List Members,
I don't have the time to do the following stuff that I am sending in to share. Things like five kids ages 3-19, husband off to war in Russia for 6 months, makes me a bit unfocused these days. I'll really be sunk when the oldest daughter leaves for college in Aug. I will be left with the laziest kids on earth. I will share this information in hopes that somebody else will have the time and share their knowledge with me or the list.
The Internet has reference works, classes, and tutorials teching proper methods of research and documentation. These include the FamilySearchGuide at www.familysearch.org/sg and Online University at www.genealogy.com/university.html and the Learning Center at www.ancestry.com/learn.main.htm
With the changing times, I think we all could use a tune up.
I hope this helps, I know I need it!

Hi. I know of two Levi Churches who don't match, but may be clues.
LEVI CHURCH , b. 1765 d. 1804 < This is a son of Timothy and Abigail Church
of Brattleboro, VT. I know absolutely nothing else about this Levi. He quite
likely went to Chenango County, NY, which is right by Madison County, as his
father was granted a large amount of land there.
LEVI CHURCH b. 31 Aug 1802 Afton, Chenango, N.Y., d. 25 Feb 1879 Afton.
Chenango Co., NY Levi lived on the family homestead.
++++m.
ELETHEA WORKS dau. of Joseph Works < This Levi is (I believe -my file is a
mess) a son of Richard Billings Church, brother of the above Levi.
It might be a good idea to join the Chenango County list at least to make a
query about them.
If I would have continued to chase Timothy Church's descendants in hopes of
finding Lovicy b 1776, I probably would have your answer for you.
Of course, your Levi may be close kin to Lovicy, in which case there appears
to be no hope. Anybody found Lovicy yet for me?
