I am looking for information about ancestors of Robert Church, Sr., born
in VA, probably Culpepper, in 1752. His father might have been Richard
but I'm not sure. I am trying to get the line back at least to the 17th
century but have hit a roadblock. Any help would be appreciated.
I always wonder if a name was written poorly, and the incorrect spelling
followed them ever after. I have an ancestor whose first name is Dolar. Wish
I had one for every name I can't find. Barb of St Pete
A LDS Ancestral File and the International Genealogical Index (via LDS's
FamilySearch.org) indicates the marriage abt. 1710 of Susanna CHURCH to
Joshua MOORE of New London, Connecticut. Joshua Moore (sometimes spelled
More or Moor), b. 1682, was the son of Abel and Hannah (Hempstead) Moore of
New London.
Can anyone document and/or provide reasonable evidence supporting this
marriage? (Sorry, but the LDS files don't count as either proof or solid
evidence.)
Anyone know the names of Susanna Church's parents?
Any and all help appreciated.

Sue n Bill:
Was Doris really Darius? Sorry Mr. Bill, not necessarily. My grandfather was Dorus A. Church, born 1883, third generation Michiganian. His ancestor came to Michigan from St. Thomas, Canada, before that family came from Penfield, New York, before that family came from Salisbury, Litchfield County, Connecticut.
I don't know where the inspiration for the Dorus name came from originally, maybe from some Darius somewhere.

Other than Oliver, I am not sure who the other Church men are. Oliver was
the Secret Agent and son of Malachi, descendent of Richard Church & Ann Marsh.
Loyalists of the American Revolution
Church, Dr. Benjamin
One of the several letters in which Church wrote to the English government
in Greek was intercepted and he was imprisoned for three years, then
banished to the West Indies. Church was put on a small Schooner in 1778,
but was lost at sea. His widow, Sarah, had already arrived in Britain in
December 1777. She had two daughters and a son, who became a surgeon, and a
pension of £100 sterling per annum. She claimed a loss of £1,500 in
property and £2,000 in outstanding debts. James Miller Church, Sarah Wild
and Hannah Kirby, children of Benjamin Church, claimed £3,450 sterling;
they were awarded £500 sterling.
Church, James Miller
Born in 1760, and the only son of Dr. Benjamin Church of Boston, James
Miller Church was surgeon's mate and ensign in the Middlesex militia in
England. He asked for relief for him and his two half sisters, who lived
with their mother.
Church, Oliver
Of Brattleboro in Cumberland County, Vermont. A farmer. Property
confiscated. Church estimated his loss at £234 New York
Church, William
Of Salisbury, Duchess County, New York. In 1772 Church purchased a tract in
Albany County, and when the Revolution began he was preparing to go there
with his livestock. In 1776 he enlisted in the King's American Regiment; he
served until the end of the war, and then settled in New Brunswick. Church
estimated his loss at £380 New York.

Hi Sue! I think your guy's first name is actually "Darius", and has
been written/spelled differently in different records! Old, script
"A"s look a lot like script "O"s. THe is a Darius Church who married
Sylvinia Winchell, 17 NOV 1844, in Alford, Berkshire (right across the
Massachusetts line from Eastern NY), Massachusetts. That information
was on the LDS web site. Rachel Converse, b. 1777, of near
Belchertown, MA, married a ? Church and had son Darius D. Church. The
above Sylvinia Winchell was born 10 DEC 1823, in either Egremont?, MA,
or Hillsdale ,NY, daughter of Harry Winchell and Polly Houghtaling.
The last two bits of information came from excerpts of Winchell and
Converse books from "Genealogy Library.com" It gives a different date
for the Darius/Sylvinia marriage - 31 DEC 1845. It would help to have
some names of spouses, descendants, etc., to try to find the right
Darius, as, although it is a unique name, there are several of them
around in that time period!
Hope this helps!

Hi Folks!
Im still looking for any info on a Dorace / Dorus /Dorris Church that wound
up in Athens, Greene Co NY by 1850. BTW, this firstname refers to a male.
Since this is such an unusual first name, I would think that any who have
this name appear somewhere in their pedigree, then there must or probably be
a relationship.
Please let me know if you find this firstname anywhere.

In your book of James Robb Church, is there a listing for a James Church,
born 1835 in Connecticut? I don't know who his parents were. He married
Mary Dorrance in 1857.

To Kathy et al.
The family book goes back to about 1338 with John of Great Parndon Parish,
manor of Ieround. I have just married into this family and have done no
research my self. It traces Richard , the immigrant (the one who went to
Hartford and Hadley and married Ann Marsh)
