Hello Everyone,
Recently have acquired some additional surnames to the
VanWerts/VanWarts, originating from the Westchester & Putnam County

to me.)
Margaret A. Hutton's Parent's: JOHN HUTTON, POBirth: Ireland

Charles H. VanWert Sr. father was Stephen VanWart. I have trace Stephan

I do have have the information from G. MacKenzie's work pertains to a
few families he researched, which I've already posted, including
VanWert/Wart. Exception being: DeVoe which I shall do in the future.
If anyone has information regarding "Sarah Jane Lent" I would be most
appreciative, together with other information on Church and
Hitchcock. I am more than willing to share whatever information I may
have.
I do aplogize for any cross posting as I'm doing, but I have no way of
knowing who is on each list. I too receive cross postings and don't
mind a bit. We're all here to help one another.
Have a nice day, second to none...
Marilyn
Hi.
Does anyone know anything about the following Church family? I am still
trying to figure out Lovicy Church, b. 1776, who m. Thomas Pollard and moved
to Seneca Falls, NY. I have been convinced she is somehow closely connected
to Timothy Church of Vermont, but now I see the name Lovice in descendants
in this family.
Thanks,
Debbie

The Osterlin Library located in Northwestern Michigan College in Traverse
City, Michigan has a computerized online index to the Traverse City
Record-Eagle (our local Northern Michigan newspaper) and its predecessors
dating back to 1858. If you are fortunate to find an ancestor thru this
index you can request a copy for 10 cents per page plus $3.00 postage and
handling. Online information and access to Traverse City Record-Eagle
Newspaper Index is available at:
http://www.nmc.edu/~library/res/record-eagle.html
However, you must have a telnet application installed on your computer to
connect to the Record Eagle index. They recommend the freeware program Tera
Term which can be downloaded directly from the Tera Term home page at:
http://hp.vector.co.jp/authors/VA002416/teraterm.html
After I downloaded this I did have to tweek the configuration because
windows wasn't too compatible with it. So If anyone does download it and
has a problem I can forward the directions I used to configure it.
Another new online search tool for marriage and death records for our part
of Northern Michigan was put online by the Grand Traverse County and the
Traverse Area District Library which can be found at:
http://www.tcnet.org/gtcounty/index.html
Happy Hunting!

>>
>>Good Morning everyone: I played hooky from work yesterday and spent
>>the day at the NARA Branch in Atlanta and it jogged my memory to pass
>>on some information to everyone.
>>
>>Prior to the US's entry into WW1 (approximately 1917-1918) every male
>>between the age of 18 and 40 was required to register for the draft.
>>The information found on the card was provided by the individual himself.
>>
>>The registration cards vary in information depending on the individual
>>draft board. But by and large the cards include: The full name of the
>>person (this means first, full middle name, any additional middle names
>>and last name); the current address of the man; his age; his birthdate
>>(some include his place of birth); whether he is a US citizen or a
>>naturalized citizen (some ask if his father was a naturalized citizen
>>and his father's race); his race; his occupation; where he is employed
>>(name of employer); address or location of employment; name and address
>>of his next of kin; some cards ask if the man is married or single and
>>how many people he supports. The card is signed by the draftee. On the
>>back of the card his physical description is noted: Height is broken
>>down by short, medium, tall although some cards give the actual height
>>in feet and inches; Build by slim, medium, stout although some cards
>>list actual weight along with the build; color of eyes and hair; any
>>deformities or injuries are listed (such as one arm missing, blind in
>>one eye, etc); the name and address of the draft board and the date.
>>
>>When these original cards were transferred to the East Pointe NARA branch
>>the LDS spent about 3 years microfilming these cards. There are hundreds
>>and hundreds of boxes and the LDS opened one box at a time and filmed
>>them - in state order. However, within each state the cards were filed
>>by draft board, not by county or by draftee. This makes the searching of
>>the microfilm difficult to say the least.
>>
>>The good news is that the Friends of the National Archives took each
>>box after it was filmed (and checked) and sorted all of these thousands
>>and thousands of cards into - state and then COUNTY order and then in
>>alphabetical order by surname and put then in new boxes. The Friends
>>deserve all the kudos we can give them for this monstrous task.
>>
>>So ... rather than spending hours and hours searching the LDS microfilm
>>you can order copies of the original cards from NARA, if you know the
>>county your ancestor lived in between 1917-1918.
>>
>>And BTW - Ancestry.com lists WW1 Draft cards in their searchable data
>>bases, however I know for a fact that there are 22 cards for the surname
>>WHITE found in McIntosh Co, OK and Ancestry only gave me 4 of them so
>>don't depend on that site. I was told yesterday that some reps from
>>Ancestry had visited the archives a couple of weeks ago to talk about
>>filming the cards, took one look at the hundreds and hundreds of boxes
>>and simply left.
>>
>>For copies: Send a letter requesting copy(s) to:
>> NARA
>> Southeast Region
>> 1557 St. Joseph Ave
>> East Point, GA 30344
>>
>>In your letter be sure to say you want copy(s) of the WWI Draft
>>Application Cards. Include the name of your ancestor and his race,
>>the state and the county. If you want copies of ALL of the cards with
>>a given surname, ask them the cost of the copies and send a SASE for
>>them to let you know the copying cost. In your letter be sure and say
>>you want a copy of the FRONT and BACK of the card. Be sure to send a
>>SASE for the return of you copies.
>>
>>The cost for the copy is 50 cents - 25 cents for the back and 25 cents
>>for the front. If you only want one copy send a buck and say the
>>difference is to be given to the Friends of the Archives, because after
>>all they did all this wonderful hard work for you <VBG>
>>
>>If you have any other questions about the cards please write to me and
>>I'll try to help. I've been "delving" into these cards for the past
>>few years. But PLEASE don't ask me to get the copies for you. It is
>>difficult for me to take the time off from work to visit the archive
>>to do my own research <g>.

Am looking for parents & siblings of Sarah Catherine Church (1840-1928)
who married Asa Brown (1837-1921) in 1858. They supposedly were both
born in North Carolina. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.
Sheila in WA state
Someone was looking for Dorcas Church. I found one. Dorcas Church born Aug
7,1763 parents were Benjamin and Ruth Kellogg. They are in the Line of
Richard Church and Ann Marsh Church.

For all you Northern Michigan researchers heres a fantastic newspaper index
that our local college (Northwestern Michigan College) has online. The
Osterlin Library has a computerized and a paper index covering the Traverse
City Record-Eagle as well as several other newspapers from this area of
Michigan.
The URL to the College and Record-Eagle is:
http://www.nmc.edu/~library/res/others.html
In order to get the index to work correctly you will have to download the
FREE TeraTerm program. Then follow the instructions from Dave Dahlquist
the College Librarian to configure TeraTerm. After that it works fine. If
you are lucky to find an ancestor the cost of the newspaper article is only
10cents plus $3.00 postage and handling.
Here are Daves instructions to configure TeraTerm:
>The easiest way to do this is to change the domain hosts in >TerraTerm.
>- Start Terraterm
>- Select "setup" from the upper menu followed by "TCP/IP" (if the >"new
connection" window comes up automatically, just cancel it
>- Alternately click once on each selection in the second "host list"
>window followed by "remove" until all entries in the "host list" are >gone.
>- Type "nmc.edu" in the upper "host list" window followed by >selecting the
"add" button; then select "OK"
>At this point, you should be able to restart Terraterm and make the
>connection to "nmc.edu" and login as "lisinq" with no password >required,
i.e., press <Enter> at the password prompt.
>Essentially, you will be starting Terraterm yourself to access the
>database rather than having your web browser do it for you.
Happy hunting
:)
