Irwin Wheeler Thompson was my grandfather, son: Everett Lauerance, me, Coleta Mae I will get out my papers and do some checking. I don't remember there being that many children but then I don't get in to the Butler side much any more. The Butler side goes way back, you have no idea the lines that go into that one! My gr. grandfather, Jeremiah Thompson, married an Indian woman, I am a registered Kaw(kanza) descendant. It is believed that Eliz. Chumley had Indian blood but we have never been able to prove it-not in any of the Indian (Dawes, etc) census. I am 82 heading close to 83.

Coleta, I have been snooping around the internet today, and see that Nancy Ann Butler married George Jenkins, and their daughter Florence Arlecia Jenkins married Irwin Wheeler Thompson. I am adding these folks to my tree, which I will repost later this evening.
In the 1910 census, Elizabeth Jane Chumley Butler states that she has 8 children living out of 10 born. I have 9 of the children from the 1860, 1870 and 1880 censuses. Am I missing one, were there actually 10? There are trees on Ancestry that include a Robert W Butler, born Nov. 11, 1866 in Roane Co., TN, with no death date. Is this the 10th child?

I appeciate your offer. Do you have any birth or death information on "Claiborne Chumbley"? We have the year 1800 for the birth but am not sure of place of birth or parents.
Sincerely, Dorothy Lowd Eckert

Elizabeth Jane Chumley was born 28 Sept 1831, her head stone was made wrong. Is there any one line you need info on, or person? My lines:Cavit, Chumley,Butler, Jenkins and Thompson (me). There are many lines that come into all of these so thought I would ask instead of just sending random notes.

Hi Coleta, thanks for joining our discussion. I am looking at the gravestone for Thomas and Elizabeth in the Washunga Cemetery on find-a-grave.com. Interesting that the stone has her birthdate as Sept. 31, since Sept. only has 30 days.
I saw these folks in the 1860 Roane Co., TN census, and in the 1880 Taney Co., MO census.
I would be happy to include a couple of generations of Thomas and Elizabeth's descendants in my tree on Rootsweb. I do not include living descendants.
Craig

Dorothy, you are welcome, and your imput is appreciated. We have been working to put all of the Chumleas, Chumleys, Chumbleys and Chumneys found in East Tennessee in the early 1800s into their correct family lines.
We have determined through Y-DNA testing that Robert Chumley, who was born c1786 in VA and was married to Elizabeth "Betsy" Ford, and John Chumlea, who was born in 1781 in VA and was married to Margaret Shipe, were related.
We have determined through Y-DNA testing that Robert Chumley and John Chumlea are NOT related to the family of John Chumley and Martha Lockett in Amelia County, Virginia, as many had expected.
We have also determined through Y-DNA testing that Willam Chumney, who was born c1806 in NC and was married to Matilda Burnett, and John A Chumney, who was born c1793 in NC and married to Milly Watts, were related.
Based on the different ages of our two Claibornes, I would be willing to speculate that the Claiborne, born c1800 and living in Knox and Roane counties, is a brother of William Chumney and John A Chumney. Interestingly enough, John A Chumney gave one of his sons the middle name of Clayborne.
But also, a grandson of John Chumlea had the middle name of Claiborne.
It is also speculated that the Claiborne, who was born c1811 in Virginia and was living in Sumner and Obion counties, was the son of William Allen Chumbley and Lucy Ann Harper. William and Lucy had a son named Asa Harper Chumbley born c1808 in Montgomery Co., VA. It is thought that Claiborne named his son Asa after his brother.
Hopefully all of our research on Claiborne will lead to a Chumley male descendant of Claiborne's getting his Y-DNA tested. This testing should answer some questions.
Either Claiborne's first wife, Elizabeth Cavit, died, or they parted company, but Claiborne took his daughter Elizabeth Jane into his marriage with Mary Johnson. So, I find it hard to believe that he would leave his family, and head to Sumner County, and start a new family.
Dorothy, if you have any ancestors that are missing from my tree, and are deceased, and you would like them added, just let me know, and I will add them.

I can't tell you how much I appreciate your follow-up on Claiborne Chumley. I have to admit that I was running into problems with a marriage to Judith Hale in Obion C., TN. I was finding other records of marriage for a Judith Hale that conflicted with her 07 Mar 1838 to Chumley in Obion CO, TN.
I will adjust my records and family tree and attempt to determine where Claiborne Chumley (DOB 1800) was born & died. The mystery pertaining to the marriage of Judith Hale and another C. Chumley will add info to the work that you have been doing on the various Chumley/Chumbley trees.
I am very impressed and grateful for the wonderful results that you have published.
Sincerely, Dorothy Lowd Eckert Doroeck(a)AOL.com

I have not yet determined that the Claiborne in Knox and Roane counties is the same Claiborne as in Sumner and Obion counties. The Claiborne in Knox County who married Elizabeth Cavit on Sept. 20, 1822 was probably born c1800, while the Claiborne in Obion County states his age to be 39 in the 1850 census.

wclaurence sends a wealth of information in a link to his tree that includes Claiborne Chumley, and all his notes on him. Claiborne Chumley did not die before his wife, Mary Chumley married Daniel Coleman. The 1840 and 1850 census show Claiborne in Obion County, TN where he married Judith Hale in Sumner County, TN on 07 Mar 1838. He started a new family with Judith Hale and left behind his daughter, Elizabeth Jane, who was the daughter of his first wife, Elizabeth Cabit.
