A descendant of Robert Chumley, who was born c1786 in VA and was married to Elizabeth "Betsy" Ford, and a descendant of John Chumlea, who was born in 1781 in VA and was married to Margaret Shipe, have both had their DNA tested through Family Tree DNA and have a Y-DNA match of 36/37 markers. It is quite possible that these two gentlemen, mentioned above, were bothers.
The results of these DNA tests are available to view on the Cholmondeley DNA Surname Group webpages at: http://www.worldfamilies.net/surnames/cholmondeley/
It is commonly known amongst Chumley researchers that Robert can not be positively linked to John Chumley and Elizabeth Dickens. At the same time, the Chumlea descendant has not been able to link John to any Chumlea parents. We know that John Chumley and Elizabeth Dickens had a son named John, but that he married Palenthia Adams. A very detailed tree for John Chumlea is posted by "wardma" on Rootsweb, at: http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=wardma&id=I0089
What would really help to solve the mystery would be for a male descendant, who is positive that he descends from either John Chumley and Elizabeth Dickens, or from John Chumley and Martha Lockett, to come forward and get tested. I would be happy to provide details regarding testing.

thanks for this post. I also found this information at the CHUMNEY / CHUMLEY / CHUMBLY webpage through rootsweb.com and I wondered if you have heard of that project, subscribe to it, or other? I was wondering if a subscription might be useful to finding information. The site seems to very thorough in its research and very informative.

Just a quick note to let you know that we started a Cholmondeley DNA surname group in the Family Tree DNA project a couple of years ago. The Chumley spelling is a variation of the original Cholmondeley spelling. We have a Chumley male that has tested, that is a descendant of Robert and Betsy. He originally tested 12 markers, but recently ordered an upgrade to 37 markers, and the results are due at the start of September. Please feel free to look at the Y-results and the patriarchs of our group members at:

Notes on Benjamin Lockett Jr.
BENJAMIN LOCKETT JR born c1694, Henrico County, VA and died May 1785 in Amelia County, VA. Little is known of Benjamin, Jr. except that he had a son named Richard who married Mary Logwood and lived in Bedford County, Va. They had 12 children; William, Winifred, Richard, Mabel, David, Edmund, Daniel, Jeremiah, Josiah, Rodah, Jesse, & Archibald. The parents of Benjamin Lockett Jr were:
AMELIA COUNTY, VA - CENSUS - 1782 Taxlist of William Cross Craddock
Lockett, Benja 1 10
This will is in Chumbley file. 3. John CHUMBLEY. Benjamin Lockettt certifies that Martha Chumley consents for her son, John. John married (1) Elizabeth DICKENS on 13 Apr 1783 in Prince Edward Co, Virginia. They had the following children:
12 F i. Sarah CHUMBLEY. Sarah married (1) James ADAMS on 27 Mar 1807 in Prince Edward Co, Virginia.
Sur. James Ewing Jr. James is the son of Robert (Robin?) Adams.
13 M ii. John CHUMBLEY."Marriage Bonds and Ministers Returns of Prince Edward County, VA (1754-1810) by Catherine Knorr, John Chumley married Palenthia Adams on February 5, 1806. Palenthia is the daughter of Robin Adams, deceased. Sur. William T. Walker. John married (1) Palenthia ADAMS on 5 Feb 1806 in Prince Edward Co, Virginia.
14 M iii. James CHUMBLEY was born 1788 in Prince Edward Co, Virginia.
In the 1860 Maury County,Tennessee Census, James gives his age as 72. Marriage Bonds and Ministers Returns of Prince Edward County, VA (1754-1810) by Catherine Knorr, gives the marriage of James Chumley to Martha Adams, who is the daughter of Robin Adams, deceased. Sur. John Chumley, the marriage took place on 16 Oct 1809. James married (1) Martha ADAMS on 16 Oct 1809 in Prince Edward Co, Virginia. It would appear that her James Chumbley m. Lucretia Pully would be brother to 'our' Robert, b. 1786.
Robert was a son of John Chum(b)ley m. Elizabeth Dickens? I've searched through a number of Amelia Co. VA records and can verify that the John who married Elizabeth was a son of the John who married Martha Locket, but that third generation link remains illusive.
About John Chumley who m. Elizabeth Dicken. His father was John and his mother was Martha, according to Amelia Co. VA records. He fought in the Rev. War; he's on the DAR Patriot List. He applied for a pension [according to Bill Chumley that pension application lists his birth date as December 4, 1760 NOT April 12, 1760 as someone has listed]. There was a handwritten note on the DAR application I viewed on microfilm which said "resided in Amelia Co. until about 10 yr. after war, then in Georgia until ca. 1800--Wilkes Co. Land Lottery Early Records 320,325; to Bourbon Co. KY until 1814, then Daviess Co. IN according to Indiana Insolvency Record, p. 312". These notes were not on the photocopy which I obtained from the DAR Registrar's office. The only child listed on the application was Elizabeth, b. 1801 in Georgia; she married Abraham Barr and died in Indiana.
Note from Barbara Megar:
In the will of John's father (that's the John who married Martha) there is mention of a son Robert. He CAN'T be ours because this John died in 1780 and we all know from his gravestone in Polk Co. that our Robert was born in 1786. [I notice that the Polk Co. cemetery book has a ? for that date. When I saw the stone and took a picture of it back in the mid-1970's it was broken, but the photo clearly shows 1786.]

very cool...I wonder if the henrico and amelia counties are in close vacinity with one another, or how/if the names changed. Perhaps county records would show the Chumleys in that area, what do you think? I have much information to update on my family tree before I publish, but plan on doing research on ancestry.com, as I have spent 9 years collecting the data I have now and am at a dead end. Any suggestions you may have are welcome. As I said from get go, I am new to ancestry.com and I can use all the help I can get. So very good talking with you today. I will look for you again in the future with any updates we have discussed. Kathy

I have ca 1730 for a death and Winny 17 Nov 1729.
I have this:
Contributed by: Joan Renfrow
Lockett, Benjamin 1785
Lockett, James 1759
BENJAMIN LOCKETT SR and WINIFRED PRIDE. Winifred Pride is the daughter of William Pride (a prominet Quaker leader). Benjamin Lockett Sr married Winifred Pride on February 16, 1692 in Henrico County, VA. Winifred was born around 1670 in Henrico County, VA. She died on November 17, 1729 in Henrico County, VA (death is recorded in Bristol Parish register). Benjamin Lockett Sr was born in 1669 in Bristol Parish, Henrico County, VA. He died in 1730 in Henrico County, VA. Benjamin Lockett Sr was the son of:
THOMAS LOCKETT and MARGARET OSBORNE. Margaret was born in 1649 in Henrico County, VA. She died in 1708 in Bristol Parish, Henrico County, VA. Will dated, May 22, 1708, Will p, July 1, 1708. Thomas Lockett was born around 1645 in England. He married 1667 in Henrico County, VA. He died March 1, 1686 in Bristol Parish, Henrico County, VA. The earliest document to mention Thomas Lockett is a deed transferring a headright from Thomas Osborne to Thomas Lockett, dated November 5, 1667. I assume this land was the dowery of Thomas's wife, Margaret Osborne. It is not known where this acreage was, but I do know that Thomas Osborne lived in Coxendale, Henrico County, on Proctors Creek and James River. His plantation was called Batchelers Bancke. It is my opinion that Thomas Lockett lived in today's Chesterfield County, just north of Colonial Heights. Some publications have him much further west, in the current Powhatan County, but I believe this plantation came to the Locketts in later !
generations. Reasons for my opinion are as follows:
In 1683 Thomas bought land from Priscilla Baugh Farrar. This land was described as "on Appomattox River between the Spring and Deep Bottom" formerly owned by William Baugh. Baugh owned land at the head of Perristoyle Creek at a place called "spring bottom".
According to an old map Peirces Stile Creek Ferry was between Powells Creek and Swift Creek on the Appomattox River, just west of its joining the James River.
In Thomas' Will, he left land between the spring and the Deep Bottom joining Peirles, Henrico county known as "Scotland Hills".
On another old map, there is a Pierceys Plantation on the Appomattox River west of Powels Brook.
Bristol Parish was formed in 1643 "to begin... at Powell's creek on the westward side of the Appomattox River".

As far as I know and have seen no one has gotten any futher back than them. But I am wondering if anyone has looked into going in the back door with Benjamin Lockett. That might be a possiblity their.
As to American Civil War, their were some who were on the union side, and most were grandsons. Sorry to say I have not kept track of those as I am a died in the wool southerner so if they are not Confederate I don't keep track of them. I think some of Brittian and Charles Ballards children or grandchildren were in the war, not sure of the Mo bunch. Possibly some of those.

very interesting...sounds reasonable to me from the information I have gathered. I understood the story of the MO Chumley's [robert/betsy line] to be the same.
Yes, DNA would be the way to go, and I have had no luck getting anyone to get onboard with that either.
As far as you know, has anyone been able to find any information further back than John Chumbley married to Martha Lockett in Amelia County, VA? And...do you know of any related civil war Chumley's?
thanks, Kathy

Well according to Arva Chumley that was just a story and no matter how much research anyone to date has done they are just stories. Some of the Ga. Chumley were suppose to be brother but no proof.
I wish that our bunch of Chumley men would get there DNA testing done and that way we would know for sure how many of our lines connected. We still have to do the genelogy work but it would let us know that we are kin and how close. I wish us women could do it for I would do that in a min. but men can be funny. But it needs to be done before all the men are gone. I paid for a DNA test on another one my lines (male cousin) and it at least let us know that we had the correct family lines.
The Mo. lines I am talking about are the lines that went to Mo. with Robert and Betsy. Some of them were the female lines but one of Lewis sons along with some of the female lines also went to Mo and died their. Robert Marshall and Eliza Nancy Grantham Chumley went to MO. So their were a least two generations that went their.
Andrew and Brittian went to KY but the rest of the men stayed in or around Claiborne for many years.

thanks for the tips. The oldest pic I have is Daniel Huff Chumley, which sounds like you already have. I have no pics of his parents, Lewis Franklin Chumley and Mary Elizabeth "Mae" Freeman, but Lewis Franklin [most probably his wife too] is buried at Ely Cemetary, which is very close to Chumley Cemetary in Arthur TN, Claiborne County. When I visited there a few years back, the stones were in very bad shape and the cemetary was overgrown and hazardous.
There was a story I was told from childhood and on, about our beginnings in America. Supposedly, there were 3 Chumley Brothers that came over from England and settled in VA, TN, KY, and some went on and settled in MO and TX. What I would LOVE to know is, "Who were the 3 brothers names/family? When did they come over from England? and anything else I can find." I never did get to talk to my great-uncle Woodrow and his wife Sarah Chumley before they passed, and I had the impression that they had some information about these 3 brothers, but never confirmed it.

I also know that in the last few years a lot of our MO Chumley family lines have been researching and posting to ancestry, I would love to have copies of any of their family photo's that you might have.

Just new to this, but very interested in getting in touch with you that are researching this line. Travis, you and I are in the same generation of Chumley's. Where our line splits is in the generation of Louis Garret; your great-grandfather was Jim [Is that James Roy, b: 1893 d: 1967] and his brother Van Weems was my great-grandfather. I too have a picture of Daniel Huff; he is wearing a suit with derby looking hat and long white beard. Also, I have a picture of Lewis and Annie Chumley. I am very interested in what kind of information you have to share and I am very willing to share what I have. Also, looking for descendents related to William Wheeler Chumley, another brother of Jim and Van Weems. Did you know there is a Van Weems Chumley reunion in Aurther, TN every June? Look forward to talking with you.
