Y-DNA testing has identified a connection between my Chumney branch of the Chumney/Chumley/Chumbley family tree and a Chumley branch. According to Ancestry.com the Ancestor Match is within 9 generations (approx 225 years ago).
The current patriarch of my Chumney branch is John A. Chumney of Henry County, Alabama who, according to the 1850 census, was born circa 1793 in North Carolina. The current patriarch of the Chumley branch is Thomas C. Chumley of Spartanburg County, South Carolina who was born circa 1846 in South Carolina per the 1900 and 1910 censuses.
It is not obvious who the common ancestor is that connects our two branches, but possible keys to solving the mystery may be: (1) William Young Chumley who, according to an entry on the Chumney/Chumley/Chumbley website, was born August 23, 1815 in Spartanburg, South Carolina; and (2) Baxter Chumley (William Young Chumley's father) who, allegedly, migrated to the United States from England in the late 1700's. No primary sources are provided on the website for William Young Chumley's birthdate and family members or for Baxter Chumley's emigration, and there is no information that I can find on these men in census records, marriage records, etc.
If you can identify the primary sources for the Chumney/Chumley/Chumbley website's information on William Young Chumley or Baxter (Buck) Chumley or if you have any other information on these men, please let me know.
Jim Chumney
P.S., For the record, I had my Y-DNA tested by Family Tree DNA and the descendant of Thomas C. Chumley had his Y-DNA tested by Ancestry.com.
