Right now, we are suggesting the gentlemen participate in a 37 marker y-DNA test. They can order it through the Cholmondeley webpage. A test kit is mailed to the home, a few cheek swabs are done, and the test kit is mailed back to the lab.

Yea, I would agree to help with that. I get asked all the time if I am related to the Chumleys in the Harrogate area. I am distantly related to Woodrow Chumley, who I think recently passed away. He had close family in that area, maybe that would link us somehow.

Have you folks considered DNA testing to see if the families are connected? We have started a Cholmondeley surname group (with lots of spelling variations) in the FamilyTreeDNA project.

My name is also Travis Chumley, and oddly enough, my great grandfather was Dan Chumley also. I am from Tazewell, TN and my Dan was sheriff here in the early 1900's, around 1920 or so I think. He was born in 1900 and died in 1985. I know one of his children was named Meek, which was my grandfather. Our family is buried in Chumley Cemetary in Powell Valley. I bet some of the Chumleys from Cumberland Gap are buried there also. I knew of another set of Chumley's in Powell Valley area, but I always thought we were not close if at all related. I have a lot of info if you are interested. chumleypm(a)yahoo.com
