My line goes through Elias and Nellie Dunsmore.. I do not know much about the family. Elias and Nellie had a daughter named Mahala but went by Hala J. She married Marcus Green Luttrell.

I was intrigued by Joseph CHUMNEY in the 1820 census for Williamson Co., TN. (Ancestry.com image 18 for 1820 Williamson Co., TN, unknown township). I thought there might be a connection to my dangling CHUMNEY line. So, I went a step further and researched the Williamson Co., TN Tax lists for CHUMNEY's/CHUMLEY's/CHUMBLEY's. I uncovered the following:
1800 thru 1818 ... NO CHUMNEY's/CHUMLEY's/CHUMBLEY's
1819 ... Joseph CHUMLEY with no land recorded
1820 ... NO CHUMNEY's/CHUMLEY's/CHUMBLEY's
1821 thru 1823 ... Joseph CHUMLEY with 75 acres on Carter's Creek
1824 thru 1830 ... NO CHUMNEY's/CHUMLEY's/CHUMBLEY's
Apparently, Joseph didn't like Williamson Co., and decided to move on after 1823. Does anyone know where he and his family went?
Regards,
Jim Chumney

By scanning the Pittsylvania County, Virginia tax lists for CHUMNEY'S/CHUMLEY'S/CHUMBLEY's during the period from 1813-1827, I was hoping to prove or disprove that my GGGGrandfather John A. CHUMNEY was the same as John CHUMNEY who appears in the 1820 census for Pittsylvania County, Virginia. Unfortunately, my research was inconclusive, but I thought I'd share my findings with the message board, in case it can help someone else in their research or shed some additional light on where John CHUMNEY of Pittyslvania Co., VA went after 1823.
The following information is from the Pittsylvania Co., VA Personal Property Tax Lists 1813-1823 (FHL US/CAN Film
1870199) and 1824-1833 (FHL US/CAN Film 1870200).
1813 -- Francis CHUMLEY
1814 -- Francis CHUMLEY
1815 -- Francis CHUMLEY
1816 -- Francis CHUMLEY, Edmund CHUMLEY
1817 -- Edmund CHUMLEY
1818 -- Francis CHUMLEY, Edmund CHUMLEY
1819 -- Francis CHUMLEY, Edmund CHUMLEY
1820 -- Edmund CHUMLEY, Thomas CHUMLEY, John CHUMLEY, Francis CHUMLEY
1821 -- John CHUMLEY, Francis CHUMLEY, Edmund CHUMLEY, Edward CHUMLEY, Thomas CHUMLEY
1822 -- Francis CHUMLEY
1823 -- Francis CHUMLEY
1824 -- Edmund CHUMLEY, Francis CHUMLEY
1825 -- Francis CHUMLEY
1826 -- Francis CHUMLEY
1827 -- Francis CHUMLEY
Note that John CHUMLEY disappeared from the Pittsylvania Tax records in 1821 and did not reappear (at least not through 1827). In 1825 John A. CHUMNEY married Milly Watts in Henry County, Alabama which is the first concrete evidence of his existence that I have been able to find.
Also note, that the above Pittsylvania Co., VA tax lists contain numerous CHANEY'S which could in some cases be deciphered as CHUMNEY'S. A few given names for the CHANEY'S are: Abraham, Jacob, Moses, Joseph, Ezekiel, William, Edmond, James, Thomas, Charles, David, and Allen.
Regards,
Jim Chumney
