I've read with interest the recent posts about the Chumley's in TN. I'm moving and all my files are inaccessible but I remember research I've done on my Chumley family line. It ended with a 1850 Census in Obion Co. with Claiborne Chumley as head of household. His son William Henry was listed, as well as numerous other children, and I also found Civil War records for William H. and his bro/cousin Robert Chumley who were mustered together (1860) into the 12th Kentucky Vol (I believe). My question: Has anyone come acrosss information on a Claiborne Chumley. He disappears for me prior to and after the 1850 census. Thanks for any help anyone can give me.

Just read Bob's notes re: Robert Chumley (bn. 1786 date taken from Tombstone, in Mo, per Barbara Meger's picture). in Gap Creek/Cumberland Gap being one of three brothers coming from England around 1785-1790
Robert mrd. Betsy Ford in Va. (according to Peter G. Fulkerson & confirmed by later cns. & birth records of 2 or 3 of their first born children.)
Due to his age (bn. 1786) at that time, it does not seem logical that he would have "split off" from the family.
The 1820 East Tn. cns. for that area of East Tennessee has been lost.
The 1830 Knox Co., cns. shows Robert & Betsy in Knox Co., leving some of their sons & their families in Claiborne Co., Tn.
`The 1840 Claib. Co. cns. has them (Rbt. & Betsy) listed back in Claib.Co., Tn. BUT - the 1840 Claiborne Co., Tn. cns. p CL-235 also lists a WILLIAM CHUMLEY 50-60 (bn. 1781-1790), female 60-70 (bn. 1771- 1780), 2 girls 20-30 (bn. 1811-1820), & boy 15-20 (bn. 1821-1840).
NOTE - This WILLIAM CHUMLEY (bn 1781-1790), appears to be a contemporary of Robert also bn. 1781-1790, who may, or may not, be his brother, OR could this Wm.also be a 1st, or 2nd bn. son of John & Elizabeth, asRobert appears to be?
(NOTE - There was a 2-4 year span after the mrg. of John & Elizabeth Dicken/Chumley before the "indentured" children were born, leaving "room" for both Robert & William. Where did this William, wife and children go, from Claiborne Co.,Tn.?
Due to William' year of birth, do not believe he is one of the "3 brothers" either. Was it a coincidence that both Wm. & Robert (that mrd. Betsy) ended up in Claiborne Co., Tn. at that point in time? There is just too much evidence to ignore that Rober & Betsy came from the Giles & Cumberland Co., Va. area.(Records show that John Chumley/Elizabeth Dicken were in Cumbeland Co., Va. for the wedding of Elizabeth Dicken's daughter. FORDs were also in Cumberland Co., Va.). Records (some military, too) indicate that the Ford & Chumley families were in other Va. counties, and migrated together, even earlier than the 1780 WILL (wit:by Wm. Ford) of John Chumley (living in Amelia Co., Va. & mrd. Martha "Lockett?).
The will, written in 1780 (before the Robert that mrd. Betsy Ford was born in 1786 & came to Gap Creek) could not be the Robert named in that will. That Robert was found in adjoining Va. counties, per subsquent Va. cns. -BUT a prepondrance of evidence leans towards the "Gap Creek Robert" being the 1st, or 2nd bn. son of John Chumley & Elzabeth Dicken. Assuming that this is true, Robert would have had an Uncle William Chumley living in te Cumberland Co. (Giles was at one time a part of this County.), Va. in the late 1700s& early 1800s.
I have found nothing tangible to support that Robert, bn.1786, could be one of the "three brothers" but the possibility that he could be a son of one of the 3 brothers, does exist, buI I would suggest, based on available evidence that the 3 brothers may, indeed, go further back in time, than the late 1700s. Possibly back as far as Henrico & Cumberland Co., Va. in the earlier 1700s,where sparse records exist listing & indicating as "quasi" comtemporaries; Francis, Richard, William or David.
Shipping records seem sparse, when it comes to determining just how these folks traveled across the water, apparently without leaving some records, especially so in the case of the "older brother's" trip to England & back to "settle the estate" I have not found Savannah, Charleston shipping lists, if they exist, nor have I been successful in linking them through Barbados. (There was some Chumleys there at one time, too.
A couple of years ago, my computer crashed, taking with it several years of edited, chronological arranged, information that I have not reconsructed, although I may have paper records still availale in my files, so I have not redone much since. I can only hope that ths foregoing "Food for thought" may help someone younger than I , to unravel the ongoing Chumley mystery!

Bill in your posting, you note:
"SOURCE - The 1820 Tn. cns. DOES NOT list ROBERT CHUMLEY anywhere in Tn. ..."
The 1820 Census was lost for all of Eastern Tennessee including these counties:
Anderson, Bledsoe, Blount, Campbell, Carter, Claiborne, Cocke, Grainger, Greene, Hamilton, Hawkins, Jefferson, Knox, McMinn, Marion, Monroe, Morgan, Rhea, Roane,
Sevier, Sullivan and Washington.
This probably explains why you could not find Robert.
