Unedited notes from Robert Chumley (b. 1786 in Va.) mrd. Betsy Ford, alleged tohave come fromGiles Co.,Va. to Claiborne Co.,Tn. around 1805 + or minus 1 or 2 yrs. -Just fod for thought. My computer crashed a couple of years ago, but -- SOURCE - Per P. G. Fulkerson's (bn. abt. 1840) notes wrtten from memory in Claib. Co., Tn., sometime , probably in the 1860s, (as he named children that were not born until 1851). FULKERSON stated that: "RBT. CHUMLEY came to Powell's Valley, Tn. abt. 1812, from GILES CO., Va.. He mrd. BETSY FORD of Va.. His children were; ANDREW who mrd. a *SHARP (*This was not correct, as ANDREW 1st. mrd. BETSY CADLE. It was his bro. JOHN (HENRY (THOMAS?) CHUMLEY that mrd. MELINDA SHARP), BALLARD mrd. DELINA CAROLL, BRITTAIN mrd. PEGGY RUSSELL, removed to Ky. (PULASKI CO.Ky,), SALLIE mrd. JACK LINGUAR, "MELVINA" ( This was MALINDA) mrd. JOHN "STATTON" (This should have been SLATTON), removed to Mo.. ELIZA mrd. HARVE LINGUAR, removed to Mo. & EMILY mrd!
. RIAL CLARK, removed to Chattanooga, (Tn.) . BALLARD was a soldier in the Mexican War & died in NASHVILLE on his return."
SOURCE - "Megerstch"@aol - (Barbara Meger) Provided a photo of Robert CHUMLEY's Tombstone in KINGS CEM., POLK CO., MO, which plainly shows ROBERT's YEAR OF BIRTH as 1786. and date of death as JAN. 18(?)2 or 3, ( Blv. this yr. of death was abt. 1852-3, as Rbt. DOES NOT APPEAR in the 1860 Mo. cns..)
SOURCE - The 1820 Tn. cns. DOES NOT list ROBERT CHUMLEY anywhere in Tn. ( THOUGHTS for digestion - This suggests that Robert & Betsy MAY NOT have arrived in Tn. until after the 1820 cns. , but before ROBERT CHUMLEY was listed in the Cl. Co. Court Records dated 20 Feb. 1823. There is no evidence of this Robert Chumley having any connection with "ironworking", so very unlikely was one of the "storied three brothers". )
SOURCE - (1823) Claiborne County Quarterly Court Records for Monday 20 FEB 1823 appointed ROBERT CHUMLEY. juror in the next County Court, along with Peter Hufaker, ? Lea, Christian Sharp, Thomas COALMAN, Joseph Neil, Hiram Hurst, William McHenry, Daniel Leabow, Samuel Cloud, etal..
(NOTE - Blv. Betsy died bef. 1845 , buried in an unmarked grave & Rbt. left Claiborne County after 9/6/1845, to live in Mo., with or near his daughters, MALINDA & John Slatton, & SARAH " SALLY" & J.H. LINGAR, but before the 1850 Polk County, MO. Census (left 1845-1850?}.
SOURCE - (11 April 1826) Claib. Co., Tn. Lib. , The Land Grant microreel (cpy in land grant file), #337 date 11 April 1826. ROBT. "CHUMLEY" was granted 100 acs. on "GAP CREEK", at the CUMBERLAND Mtn. & WALKERs LINE. The Cl. Co., Tn. Survey Records Bk, p94, #357, states " ISAAC ELY& ANDREW CHUMLEY, sworn chainers surveyed ROBERT CHUMLEY"S 100acs, at CUMBERLAND Mtn., Gap Creek & Walkers line, along with WALTER EVANS, Surveyer of Claib. Co., recorded 12 Nov. 1830."
(NOTE - Why was there a four year delay in recording, until 1830? The 1830 Knox Co., Tn. cns. listed ROBERT CHUMLEY as being in KNOX CO., TN. in 1830, but Rbt. did return to Claib. Co., Tn. for the 1840 Claib. Co., cns.),
SOURCE - The 1830 KNOX. Co., Tn. cns. lists ROBERT CHUMLEY & wife, both 40-50 (bn. 1781 - 1790), boy 20-30 (bn. 1801- 1810 - This wld. be JOHN HENRY (THOMAS?) bn. 1809, mrd. 1831), boy 15-20 (bn. 1811-1815. This wld. be. CHARLES BALLARD, bn. 1814, mrd. 6 Feb. 1836), boy 10-15 (bn. 1816-1820. This wld. be BRITTAIN, bn. abt. 1815, mrd. 1833), 3 girls 5-10 (bn. 1821-1825. They wld. be. ELIZABETH bn 1824, mrd. 1843; MALINDA bn. 1825, mrd. 1845 & an "unidentified" girl.) & girl 0-5 (bn. 1826-1830. This wld. be. EMILY bn. 1830, mrd. 1845.)
(NOTE - The 1830 Cl. Co., Tn. cns. DOES NOT list ROBERT CHUMLEY, however it DOES LIST the 2 mrd. sons. They were listed with their own two hsehld.s on p151, near the hsehlds. of MARY FREEMAN, PETER HUFFACRE, Wm. NORVEL & MARY LINGEAR.)
SOURCE - The "1836" Tn. Civil Dist. & Tax. Lists (include some fr. 1836, 1837, 1838 or 1839) , Dist. 4 (Cumberland Gap Dist.) In 1839 - lists BRITTAIN CHUMLEY, LEWIS CHUMLEY, JOHN CHUMLEY, BALLARD CHUMLEY
(NOTE - WHY was ROBERT NOT LISTED in the 1839 Tax Listing, unless he & the remainder of the family were still in KNOX. CO., TN. until about 1839-1840?)
(THOUGHTS TO PONDER?)
SOURCE - The 1840 Claib. Co.,Tn. cns., p CL-235 WILLIAM CHUMLEY 50-60 (bn. 1781-1790), female 60-70 (bn. 1771- 1780), 2 girls 20-30 (bn. 1811-1820), & boy 15-20 (bn. 1821-1840).
(NOTE - This William appears to be a contemporary of Robert also bn. 1781-1790, but DOES NOT appear to be his brother. Could this Wm. be one of the 3 brothers that came over from England ? If so, was it a coincidence that both Wm. & Robert ended up in Claiborne Co., Tn. at that point in time?) Other Chumleys nearby were:
#CL-235, (near all of the other Chumleys on pg. 230-233, ) JOHN CHUMLEY (The Abs. interpreted the writing as "CRUMLEY", , but it is CHUMLEY!) (bn. 1801-1810).
#Cl-232 lists ROBERT CHUMLEY & wife, both 50-60 (bn. 1781-1790), 2 girls 15-20 (bn.1821-1825), girl 10-15 (1826-1830).
#CL - 232, ANDREW CHUMLEY 40-50 (bn. 1791-1800), wife 30-40 (bn. 1801-1810), girl 15-20 (bn. 1821-1825), 2 boys 10-15 (bn. 1826-1830), a boy & a girl 5-10 (bn. 1831-1835), boy under 5 (bn. 1834-1840);
CL - 232 LEWIS CHUMLEY & wife 30-39 (bn. 1801-1810), 2 girls 5-9 (bn. 1831-1835), 2 boys under 5 (bn. 1836-1840) & 2 girls under 5 (bn 1836- 1840). ;
#CL-232 JOHN CHUMLEY & wife 30-40 (bn. 1801-1810), a boy & a girl 5-10, (bn. 1841-1845)
#CL-233 CHARLES (BALLARD) CHUMLEY & wife, both 20-30 (bn.1811-1820), boy 0-5 (bn. 1836-1840), 2 girls 0-5 ( bn. 1836-1840),;
#CL-230, BRITAIN "CHUMNEY" & wife, both 20-30 (bn. 1811-1820) & 2 boys 0-5 (bn. 1836-1840).
CL-235 listed another of Rbt.'s sons, JOHN CHUMLEY 30-40 (bn. 1801-1810), wife 20-30 (bn. 1811-1820), girl 10-15 (bn. 1826-1830), 2 girls 5-10 (bn. 1831-1835), boy 0-5 (bn. 1836-1840) & girl 0-5 (bn. 1836-1840);
-
(NOTE - All of these Chumleys were living near the following Associated names; , Wm. CONDRYs Jr. & Sr., Wm. CARROLL Sr. 20-30 (bn. 1811-1820) , Wm. CARROLL, JR., 15-20 (bn. 1821-1825( , GARRET N. BRIANT; BARNETs , GEORGE & JAMES CAMPBELL, Wm. CONDRY Sr. & Jr., , YOUNGs, SOUTHERNs, SLATTENs,SHARPs, WOODSONs, RUSSELls, Wm. St. JOHN 50-60 (bn. 1781-1790), RUTLEDGEs, NORVILLs, LINGARs, HUFF, JOHNSTON, HURST, FORDs, FREEMANs, FULKERSONs, DODSON, DOBKINS, DAY, DAVIS, HARPER, et al.. - Most of the foregoing names were involved with the Chumleys in later years of their migration & many of these same family names were in the same areas in Va. in the mid 1700s.)
SOURCE - The 1840 Cl. Co., Tn. cns.p #Cl-232 lists ROBERT CHUMLEY & wife, both 50-60 (bn. 1781-1790), 2 girls 15-20 (bn.1821-1825 . Probably MALINDA , mrd. 1845 & ELIZABETH mrd. 1845.) ), girl 10-15 (1826-1830 - This would be EMILY, mrd. 1845).
(MEMO - INTERESTING "food for thought re. the foregoing: Could it be that the Wm. CHUMLEY listed as bn. 1781-1790 is the brother of ROBERT CHUMLEY? Could it be that since FULKERSON omitted listing JOHN CHUMLEY as the son of Rbt. in his memoirs, that in reality this JOHN CHUMLEY , bn. 1801-1819 is actually the son of William?????)
SOURCE - (1841) Claib. Co. Deed Bk. "F", p156, 15 June 1841, ROBERT "CHUMBLY" made a Deed of Trust to LEWIS "CHUMBLY", stating that "ROBERT CHUMBLY being justly indebted to JOHN "CHUMBLY" in the sum of #100.00 by said JOHN CHUMBLY paid & advanced and that the said JOHN CHUMBLY being desirous to secure the payment of the money that has been advanced etc. ---& JOHN CHUMBLY -etc.--. (copy in Robert Chumley file.)
SOURCE - The 1850 Tn. cns. DOES NOT list ROBERT CHUMLEY & BETSY (FORD), & based on the yob & place of birth of Roberts Grandchildren, indication is thatBetsy died & Robert went to Mo. ard. 1848-49.
SOURCE - The 1850 POLK Co., Mo. cns, p28, hsehld #356-356 lists as the hoh ROBERT CHUMLEY 64 (bn 1786 in Va.) living with his dau. MELINDA (CHUMLEY) 25 (bn 1825 in Tn.) & husband JOHN SLATTEN 24 (bn 1826 in Tn.) (+ 2 boys age 6 & 2) . Nearby was the following:
Living in hsehld. #357-357 ("next door") was another of Rbt's daughters, ELIZA CHUMLEY LINGER 23 (bn 1827 in Tn.) & her husband J. HAROLD (HARVEY?) LINGER 27 (bn. 1823 in Tn.) (+ 2 boys age 7 & 6 + & 1 girl 1.) ,
SOURCE - Ibid, The *other son" JOHN HENRY CHUMLEY , mrd. MELINDA SHARP in 1831 & they were treated as a separate family in the writings, with no indication of any kinship with RBT..
(NOTE - * See foreging "food for thought note abv. For some unknown reason, Fulkerson seems to have completely omitted the family of the older son of Rbt., which was the LOUIS FRANKLIN CHUMLEY family that remained in the same "old home" area of Cumberland Gap., Tn.)
( GENERAL RELATED NOTE- The following is JUST POSSIBLY a "Related Reference" & "Food for Thought" note, NOT necessarily related to ROBERT CHUMLEY & BETSY FORD's coming from GILES Co, Va. to Tn. - Info from the Cumberland Co., Va. Lib. - list the "Mrg. Records of CUMBERLAND CO., VA.," p132 , 23 Aug. 1791, RICHARD DICKEN gave Consent & JOHN "CHUMBLEY" signed as Surety for the CUMBERLAND Co., Va. mrg. of Francis Walthall & SUSANNA DICKEN [Consent dated the 22 August 1791), lending credence to the belief that RICHARD DICKEN had "divorced" ELIZABETH "DICKEN" abt. 1781-2.) Eliz. then, mrd. JOHN CHUMLEY (s/o Jno. &Martha in Amelia ) AUG. 13, 1783, therefore did make an appearance in CUMBERLAND Co., Va. near Montgomery & Giles Co., Va.).
(NOTE - The RBT. CHUMLEY, that mrd. BETSY FORD, records indicate that this RBT. was bn. 1786 (per Tombstone), which is later than the "JOHN CHUMLEY/MARTHA" will written in Dec. 1780, naming "a" Rbt. as one of the heirs. There must be some significance to the 1786 birth of Rbt. & the JOHN CHUMLEY & ELIZABETH "DICKEN" mrg. in April of 1783, & later mrg. of ELIZABETH's daug., in Cumberland Co., Va.?)
( NOTE - The "big" question, through the process of elimination, subsquent events, including the evident proximity of the families in the 1830 Knox., Co., Tn. cns., IS: It is probable that Robert Chumley was the first born son of JOHN CHUMLEY & ELIZABETH DICKEN, therefore OLD ENOUGH to "keep at home" as opposed to, SALLY [Sarah] , JOHN & RICHARD, being "bound out" in 1794 & JAMES in 1796, The 1830 Knox. Co., Tn. cns DOES list ELIZABETH CHUMLEY as hd of the hsehld.& her age does match that of ELIZABETH DICKEN- Could be his mother!)
(NOTE - * Until recently, seeing an actual enhanced photograph of the tombstone of Robert Chumley, from Barbara Meger, showing his year of birth as 1786, had felt that he may have been bn. in 1781, so many of my records may erroniously indicate "Abt. 1781" as yob..; 2nd. By Extrapolation, Robert & the girls, must have only arrived in Mo, after the birth of LOUIS in 1848 & before the 1850 Mo. cns.)
Other Chumley Associated names living nearby in 1850 were; hsehld. #355-355 family of "ZEKE" or "JEFE" G. HUDSON (One of the MONTGOMERY CO., CHUMLEYs mrd. a "HUDSON"),
#358-358 of WM. RUNNELS (blv. this is a variation of the RUNIONS name in CLAIB. CO., TN. ) & next door to ROBERT CHUMLEY was hsehld
. #357-357 of HARVEY "LINGER" 27 (Farmer, bn. 1823 in Tn.), ELIZA 23 (bn. 1827 in Tn. - This was another daug. of ROBERT & BETSY.), FRANKLIN LINGER 7 (bn. 1843in Tn.), ANDREW 6 (bn. 1844 in Tn.) & EMILY 1 (bn. 1849 in Mo.)
SOURCE - The 1860 Mo. cns. DID NOT list RBT.
I have not edited them again, or necessarly put these notes in chronological order since the "Crash"Hope they help someone.!
