Anita, I think it is probably my GGGrandfather. He shows up in Maury County, TN on the 1830 Census and died there in 1843. We have a pretty solid record of his descendants down to me. (His son (my ggrandfather) Byrd Chumbley, Born in Tenn in 1815, married Rebecca Lax there in 1848. My grandfather, Bedford Forrest Chumbley was born in Yazoo, County MS in 1865. Most of that line of Chumbleys then settled in Bosque County, TX. My GF then worked as a trail hand moving cattle up to Laramie and married my GM Ida Frank.
Thanks very much for your attention to this.
Jim

Hi Jim,
I don't know why, but I have this info on a Joseph Chumbley. I don't have him
attached to anyone, and I have his birthyear as ca 1780, no place of birth.
Obviously, I have nothing on his father, but is this your guy?

2. Roll of Tennessee Cavalrymen in the Natchez |Expedition.
Among the papers of General (.'offee is a roll of the regiment of cavalry
conimaiided by him on the expedition to Natchez. This is in tJie foim of a
record of names of men with the number of blankets, sabres and pistols farnished
by each.
It is probabic that tliis is the same regiment that was afterward commanded by
General Cotlee in the first part of the Creek War. There are no muster rolls of
the troops of the Creek War in the archives of Tennessee, but ihese are
preserved in the War Kecords Office of the War Department at Washington. This
roll of cavalrymen contains the names of ancestors of many Tennesseeans.
It will be interesting to ascertain f'-om what counties respectively these
cavalry troops come. It is certain that troop No. 3, commanded by Capt.
Baskerville. came from Sumner County. A number of the names are memorable in its
annais. It will be well if anyone who reads this roll will point out the home
counties of other troops. The title is as follows : "A return of Blankets.
Sabies and Pistols, furnislied by individuals at their own private expense, in
the Regiment of Tennessee Volunteer Cavalry, commanded by Colonel John Coffee —

My father's first cousin on the Chumbley side, Frank Baldwin, made a visit to Lord Cholmondely's "castle" on a trip to England (in the 1960's?). In the very large front door was a smaller door with a bell pull. After Frank pulled the bell, a man answered that Frank thought must be a butler. The "butler" was Lord Chumbley himself. Though it was midmorning, the Lord invited Frank in for a bit of whisky. Frank ended up staying two days and thoroughly enjoyed the lord. I have a letter somewhere with Frank's account of the whole business.
For a long time I believed "Cholmondely" was a name that came over with the Normans in 1066. I later learned it was a very old, modified Saxon word for a place name in England. It is of course still today pronounced "Chumly."

Dear Anita,
Yes and that is where you come in at. You can do the same as I did ask
others we come in contact with to join. Are you of the Asa Chumley line?

Hi Jim and Jim, also Glenda,
I jumped to conclusions too early -- something I complain about in others!
Clearly, Jim's Asa Chumley was NOT the same as Oba/Osa/Obadiah Chumley.
Census records alone prove that. After I emailed you (prematurely), I
looked at census records for Asa and for Obadiah. Asa Chumbley (b. ca 1808)
was in Pulaski Co. VA in 1840 through 1900, when he was 91. Obadiah E.
Chumley (b. ca 1804) was in Pittsylvania Co. VA from 1830 through 1850 and
died in Campbell Co. Oct 1860 (per mortality census). Jim, if you don't
already have the Pulaski Co. census records, let me know and I'll send them.
Glenda, I too have a participant in the Chumley project (C-15) and wish
more people would join.

Jim and Anita,
I cannot help on the Chumley/Chumbley family you are seeking but I would
like for your to look at the Cholmondeley DNA Project,
It has been a great help on sorting most things Chumley/Chumbley LOL with a
few surprises' but please look at the web page and make a decision based on
what we have already tested. The web site can be found here:
http://www.worldfamilies.net/surnames/cholmondeley/
All you need is a male named Chumley that is willing to take the test. We
have been searching for any and all male Chumley men (any spelling) for a
couple of years now to join the project.
At the top of the web page you will see Patriarchs and y-dna results. The
Patriarchs when you click it will give you a pedigree of those who are on
the project with some that have test. The y-dna results page will give you
the dna results of those that have tested who they descend from and who they
matched and or did not match.
It has help us all in so many ways to dispel or prove our research theories,
and continues to do so and I suspect will do so for many years as long as we
can get new testers.
Sincerely,
G. Mounger
A Chumley researcher of Robert and Elizabeth Ford Chumley of Virginia.

Hi Jim,
I could be wrong but I'm guessing that your grandmother's grandfather was
Oba/Aba/Obadiah E. Chumley. If so, he was b. ca 1804 and died Oct 1860,
Campbell Co. VA. This Oba/Obadiah was married in Pittsylvania Co. VA in
1826 so was in SW VA earlier that 1840.
I have 3 known sons of this Oba/Obadiah: Thomas F., Obadiah, and Daniel.
What was Eula Chumbley's grandfather's name?
If any of this sounds like it might match, then I can send you more. Also,
if so, it would mean he was a brother of my g-g-g-grandfather Edmund
Chumley.
Look forward to hearing from you.

Anita,
The oldest Chumbley I know about was my grandmother's (Eula Chumbley) grandfather Asa Chumbley, who lived in Tidewater Virginia when young and then emigrated to Southwest Virginia, perhaps about 1840. He settled there and raised a large family of five sons. Eula married my grandfather Walter Alexander McCormick. Walter died in middle age.

Roll of Tennessee Cavalrymen in the Natchez Expedition 295
2. Roll of Tennessee Cavalrymen in the Natchez |Expedition.
Among the papers of General (.'offee is a roll of the regiment of cavalry conimaiided by him on the expedition to Natchez. This is in tJie foim of a record of names of men with the number of blankets, sabres and pistols farnished by each.
It is probabic that tliis is the same regiment that was afterward commanded by General Cotlee in the first part of the Creek War. There are no muster rolls of the troops of the Creek War in the archives of Tennessee, but ihese are preserved in the War Kecords Office of the War Department at Washington. This roll of cavalrymen contains the names of ancestors of many Tennesseeans.
It will be interesting to ascertain f'-om what counties respectively these cavalry troops come. It is certain that troop No. 3, commanded by Capt. Baskerville. came from Sumner County. A number of the names are memorable in its annais. It will be well if anyone who reads this roll will point out the home counties of other troops. The title is as follows : "A return of Blankets.
