[CHUMBLEY] James Marion Chumbley-Mattie L. Fitzgerald
by Lewis & Marilyn Chumbley
Glenda,
Thanks for your post. Yes, this is the family we are researching. We have a lot of info on James and Mattie after they moved to Texas, including their children, Mattie's death and burial in 1899, and James' remarriage to Alcencia Mangum. Matties gravestone is located in a cemetery in Delta County, just up the road from Commerce, TX.
What we've not been able to find is a record of their marriage. We know the families were in Kentucky in 1880 and they were not married. Their first child (Elbert)was born in 1884. There's a bit of confusion as to whether he was born in Kentucky or Texas. The 1900 Census shows all the children with James, and that all were born in Kentucky. We know for a fact that that's not correct (my grandfather, George A, was born in 1890 in Denison, TX). There is a report in FamilySearch that James was married in Texas in 1884, but I've not been able to locate a public record of this marriage.
As I stated in the last post, I'm trying to determine if Mattie's father (listed as C. Fitzarrel in Wayne County, Ky in the 1880 Census) is the same as Coleman Fitzgerald (listed with his family in Wayne County in both the 1850 and 1860 Census records). If this is true, then other records would show that Mattie Fitzgerald and James M Chumbley were second cousins as Coleman married the daughter of Elizabeth Rainwater Roberts who was a sister to James' grandfather (Bartholomew Rainwater). Interesting.
