I'm Bob Thornton and have been researching my line in Cheshire and
Lancashire starting in the post-Conquest times. I have found that the
Thorntons and the Cholmodeleys in those times in Cheshire shared a common
ancestor named William Belward.
I would like to hear from anyone on this list interested in this connection.
I can provide a good bit of documentary information that should be of
interest.
I'm also interested finding in a male Chumbley who is willing to do a DNA
test that will prove/disprove the connection. If there is a close match to
my DNA then the connection will be proven. I'm willing to share the cost.

I have replied directly to Bob but thought I would post to the mailing list,
also. I am a descendant, although my line is spelled Chumlea. My oldest
ancestor is John Chumlea, born 28 Feb. 1781 in Virginia, died 31 May 1861 in
Fountain County, Indiana. He married Margaret Shipe, born 29 May 1782 in
Virginia, died 24 June 1866 in Fountain County, Indiana. My tree is on
RootsWeb. I am very interested in the concept of DNA testing f
or genealogy
purposes. My cousin (not from this line) is involved in the FamilyTreeDNA
project. If any of you are interested in DNA testing through FamilyTreeDNA, my
cousin has volunteered to be the administrator for a Cholmondeley/Chumley/Chumbley/Chumlea

Hello Bob,
I'm a grandson of Eula Chumbley and a great-great grandson of 19th
century Asa Chumbley of New River, Virginia. I have material and
photos I could share with you, but I'm leaving on a long trip early
tomorrow. Write me in about three weeks and I'll respond. Most
interesting thing I have is is a letter from my Dad's first cousin,
who went to Cholmondely Ca
stle as a tourist and ended up spending two
days at the castle at the invitation of Lord C.

Mary Ann, the DNA project will be a great development. The situation with
William le Belward and his descendants is one ideally suited to
resolution/proof by DNA testing. He was ancestor for several major lines in
Cheshire: Cholmondeleys, Richardsons, Gochs, Golburns, Thorntons and
Egertons. For example, if we get a close match between myself and a
Cholmondeley descendant we will have significant proof of Belward as
progenitor of the various clans. I am sending you by private E Mail a chart
showing some of the key relationships.
William le Belward is famous in the literature as a remarkable example of
how men i
n Medieval times assumed last names based on different reasons.
I am a member of the both the Thornton DNA Project and the I1 Project and
have had additional tests run and am now classified as Haplogroup I1c- Norse
P109+ My Kit # is 10677 at both sites
( http://www.familytreedna.com/public/Thornton/ and
http://www.familytreedna.com/public/yDNA_I1/ ).
I can send your cousin a CD with lots of info on the Cheshire lines, etc.

As to the parents of Robert and Elizbath Ford Chumbley.
Well their are some thoughs but sorry to say no real proof. Since some of us that are purest we don't like to splash our undomunced matieral online.
Maybe one day one of us will find that one little bit of evidance that will prove our speculations and we can post such.
Until than we just keep our thories to ourselves or with a few others.
Glad that Eugene spoke up and was still online. He does have a wonderful web page. And better still he is your uncle. What better person to find and exchange with.

Hi Rae Ann
Nice to hear from you. Yes, i have been working on my family for about 20 years now. I have not found a connection to England from our Robert in Va. Our name was Cholmondeley in England (Pronounced Chumley)
I have all the family information on Ancestry .com
I have a lot of pictures on there also. I could invite you to the site and you could add whatever info you want to about your family. I also have a lot of family pictures on the Kodak Gallery web site. If you are interested, I could invite you to view to any or all of the close to 1500 pictures I have of our family.
Yes, we still live in Az. If you prefer E-mail, send me your address

Yes.. Hi Uncle Gene! We met about 20 years ago in Arizona. Do you still live there? I'm Rae Ann.
My dad & Vivian had told me that you had done a lot of genealogy. I would love for you to share with me. I want to pass on to my son as well. How far back have you traced? Do you know what country we immigrated from and when? I've gone back to Robert Chumbley (b.1786) and his wife Elizabeth "Betsy" Ford.
It's so great to hear from you. I'd love to know more about my grandparents (your parents) and my other uncles & aunts (your siblings)on a personal level too. You know my dad's not a big story teller. I really think I take after the Chumbleys more so than my mothers family. I'm an awful lot like my dad. Just shows you how big a role genetics makes in a person's life. I remember meeting 2 of you & dad's brothers in Las Vegas too. I really missed out on not knowing you all growing up.
Again, thanks for replying. Hope to hear from you again soon.

I come from a Washington Lee Edward Chumley in Florida (my grandfather),

Luco Marion Chumbley was a son of Lewis Chumbley b. 1848 and Elizabeth Gosser/Gasser Chumbley.
Lewis Chumbley was a son of Brittian Chumbley b. 1815 and Margaret "Peggy" Russell.
Brittian Chumbley was a son of Robert "Cholmondeley" Chumbley b. 1786 and Elizabeth Betsy Ford Chumbley.
Robert and Betsy Ford Chumbley was the parents of nine known children.
I descend through Robert and Betsy Chumbley through their son Lewis Chumbely b. 1806. (I guess you could call him the 1st).
The children of Robert and Betsy Ford Chumbley were:
1. Andrew Chumbley b. 1803 m Elizabeth Cadle.
2. Lewis Chumley b. 1806 m. Mary M. Freeman. My line
3. John Henry Thomas Chumbley Chumley b. 1809 m Milenda Sharp.
4. Charles Ballard Chumley Chumbley b. 1814 m. Delina Carroll.
5. Brittian Chumbley b. 1815 m. Margaret Russell. your line.
6. Malinda Chumbley Chumley b. 1821 m John Slatton.
7. Sarah Chumbley Chumley b. 1823 m. John Lingar.
8. Elizabeth "Eliza" Chumley b. 1824 m. James H. Lyngar.
9. Emily Chumbley Chumley b. ca 1826 m. Riley Clark.
The only way you can seperate this family is through dates of birth and wives.
Yes their were many Lewis Chumbley in the same lines. Some were brothers, nephews, cousins.
In fact I have six Lewis Chumbley/Chumley in just my data base.
My great grand father was Lewis Franklin Chumley. This Lewis Franklin was a son of Daniel Huff Chumley and Daniel Huff Chumley was a son of Lewis Chumley and Mary Elizabeth "Mae" Freeman. In turn he was a son of Robert and Betsy Ford Chumbley.
Let me put it this way your Brittian Chumbley and my Lewis Chumley the 1st were brothers.
In less I miss a child your Lewis Chumbley was the youngest of six known child:
Children of Brittian Chumbley and Margaret "Peggy" Russell
1. Alexander Chumbley b. 1838 m. Sarelda Ann Rainwater.
2. Andrew Chumbley b. ca 1840 m. Mary E. Doss.
3. James Chumbley b. ca 1842
4. Robert Chumbley b. ca 1843 m. Mary Eastham.
5. Melinda Chumbley b. ca 1844 m. Milton W. Tarter.
6. Lewis Chumbley b. 18 Nov 1848 m. Elizabeth Gosser/Gasser
Your Line.
As I explained the first time their are many same given named children of these lines, and some used the spelling of Chumbley, and some used Chumley, with a few using both in records.
Hope this explained and did not muddy the waters more. I do know that it is very hard to follow sometime.
I don't know if she is still online but an Alice Lorea is from this line and has done a lot of work on it. In fact she is the person that gave me info on this direct line of yours.
Sincerely,

I am of the line of Robert and Elizabet via the son named Lewis who married Mary Elizabeth "Mae" Freeman.
You will find many of this line named Lewis, Robert, Brittian, Charles, and John as the name repeated many times through the generations.

I am the granddaughter of Luco Marion Chumbley and Emma Frances Lee. Can anyone supply me with more info on my grandparents? In return I can help fill in some of the missing info under them. They had 11 children, several are still living.
