(1) On October 10, 1820, John CHUMBLEY married Sarah K. ROWLAND in Pittsylvania county, Virginia. [Source: Pittsylvania County, Virginia Marriages 1767-1862 (FHL US/CAN Film 33326, pg 70)]
(2) John CHUMNEY (age 16-26) appears in the 1820 census for Pittsylvania County, Virginia with a young woman (age 16-26). They have no children.
(3) In 1820, John CHUMLEY suddenly appears in the Pittsylvania County, Virginia Personal Property Tax Lists. He is also included in the 1821 tax list, but he disappears thereafter and doesn’t return (at least not through 1833 which is where I stopped checking). [Source: Pittsylvania Co., VA Personal property tax lists 1813-1823 (FHL US/CAN Film 1870199) and 1824-1833 (FHL US/CAN Film 1870200).]
It is very likely that the three John CHUMBLEY’s/CHUMNEY’s/CHUMLEY’s mentioned above are the same person.
Does anyone know what became of this John CHUMBLEY/CHUMNEY/CHUMLEY?
Does anyone know who this John CHUMBLEY/CHUMNEY/CHUMLEY’s father was? Francis? Edmund? Other?
Best Regards,
Jim Chumney
This Sunday, July 16, the Chumley family in Red River County, TX will be
having a reunion at the Bluff Cemetery near Detroit, TX. Other families related
are the Weddles, Flippos, and Norwoods. Several of the Chumley's are buried
in this cemetery that dates to pre-Texas statehood days.

Since there are new researchers for these names, I'm hoping someone can locate this family.
They spelled the name in ENG as Cholmondeley, I believe, although pronounced it Chumley. There was at least a Lucy, who had sons.
My great-grandfather was in VA about 1869-1871, visiting the Cholmondeley cousins, who were supposedly boys about his age. He was born in 1852. Where he was reminded him of England, and they rode horses and had fox hunts. His name was Edward (Ted) Teasdale Buckell.
I'm trying to make a connection between these families.
At one time a relative had a French (grammar?) book with the name of Lucy Cholmondeley written in, but it has been lost.

In my quest to connect my Chumney branch to the rest of the Chumney/Chumley/Chumbley family tree, I extracted the following data from the Prince Edward County, Virginia Personal property tax lists, 1809-1831 (FHL FHL US/CAN Film 1905692). Hopefully, it will be helpful to someone.
++ 1809 – Robert Chumbley
++ 1810 – Robert Chumbley, John Chumbley, James Chumbley
++ 1811 – Robert Chumbley, John Chumbley, James Chumbley
++ 1812 – Robert Chumbley, Edward Chumbley, James Chumbly, John Chumbly
++ 1813 – Robert Chumbley, Edward Chumbley, James Chumbley, John Chumbley
++ 1814 – Robert Chumbly, Edward Chumbly, John Chumbley, James Chumbley
++ 1815 – John Chumbley, James Chumbley, Edward Chumbly, Robert Chumbly Est.
++ 1816 – Edward Chumbley, Thomas Chumbley, James Chumbley, John Chumbley
++ 1817 – John Chumbley, Thomas Chumbley, Francis Chumblee
++ 1818 – Fanney Chumbley, Edward Chumbley, John Chumbley
++ 1819 – Fanny Chumbley, Edward Chumbley, Thomas Chumbley, John Chumbley
++ 1820 – John Chumbley, Frances Chumbley
++ 1821 – Frances Chumbley
++ 1822 – Frances Chumbley, John Chumbley
++ 1823 – John Chumbley, Frances Chumbley
++ 1824 – John Chumbley, Frances Chumbley
++ 1825 – Frances Chumney, Willis Chumbley, John Chumbley
++ 1826 – Frances Chumbley, Willis Chumbley, John Chumbley
++ 1827 – Willis Chumly, Martha Chumly, Edward Chumly
++ 1828 – Edward Chumley, Martha Chumley, Philip Chumley, Susan Chumley, Willis Chumley
++ 1829 – Edward Chumley, Martha Chumley, Ransome Chumley, Willis Chumley
++ 1830 – Edward Chumley, Ransome Chumley
++ 1831 – Ransome Chumley, Willis Chumley
The above data indicates there was a third early Francis/Frances Chumley/Chumbly [Francis Chumley (male) appears in the Pittsylvania tax lists during this same period, and Frances Chumbley (female) married Moses Lewelling on 14 January 1788 per MARRIAGES OF PRINCE EDWARD COUNTY, VIRGINIA 1754-1810 by Catherine L. Knorr that was excerpted and posted on the Chumbley mailing list back in 1998 by Jo Collier]. The above data also suggests that the Frances Chumbley in this tax list was a female because of the interruption in entries for Frances/Francis Chumbley/Chumblee for the years 1818 and 1819 during which a “Fanny” Chumbley was included instead.
Also, note the entry for Robert Chumbly Est in 1815. Assuming “Est” indicates “Estate” along with Robert’s disappearance from the records thereafter, suggests that this Robert Chumbley died circa 1814.

Jim Chumney
