Sure sounds like it. Grandpa played at KY. He then became an artist and
settled down at the farm. It is actually in Frederick County (Stephens
City) Virginia. And yes, it is now a very nice bed and breakfast. The
website for it is www.vauclusespring.com.

Hi Don -
I am more from Northern Virginia (Frederick County), but I can try to be
of
some help. My Chumley ancestors are mostly from eastern Tennessee. I am
the granddaughter of John Wesley Chumley, who grew up in Tennessee. His
father was Charles Lawrence, who was a surgeon. From there, the order is
James Franklin, Charles Ballard, and Robert. Robert apparently immigrated
from England and settled in Tennessee in the 18th century.

Megan,
I am researching the Chumley Family in Virginia. Especially in the area of
Pittsylvania Co., Va. Would like to exchange information with you. I have
much information about the Chumley family in KY. My gr.grandfather Larkin
C.
Chumley came to Harrodsburg, Mercer Co. Ky. in 1849 from Pittsylvania Co.,
Va. He had two younger brothers, William Thomas Chumley and Coleman
Chumley.
All three were sons of John Chumley.

Hi Stephen -
The next time you get up to NYC, see if you can track down the guy who
runs
it (Steve). He was a wealth of information and seems to be fascinated
with
Lee Chumley. This guy also runs the Blue Mill Restaurant, which is
right
around the corner from Chumley's. When I told him I was a Chumley he
was
so
excited, he gave me a t-shirt. :)
We had quite an experience the day we met Steve. We had gone to
Chumley's
to try their brunch, went in, sat down, found a few other patrons there
and
waited - because nobody appeared to be running the place. We chatted
with
an older lady (had to have been about 80-90 years old) who was telling
us
about meeting Mrs. Chumley at the back door of Chumley's in the 1920's
to
buy alcohol when it was illegal to do so. Finally, a bartender from the
Blue Mill shows up to get something and go back to the Blue Mill, and is
completely surprised to find us there. Apparently there was no brunch
at
Chumley's that day, but here we were in the middle of Manhattan, able to
just walk right in to an unlocked and completely unmanned restaurant.
That's when the bartender sent Steve over and we talked about the
original
proprieter.
Anyway, thank's for responding, I look forward to seeing your pictures!

I don't know anything about Lee Chumley, but I have been to Chumley's
Bar in Manhattan. It really is rather hard to find. Some of the frequent
famous literary regulars included F. Scott Fitzgerald, John Steinbeck,
Upton Sinclair, and Ernest Hemingway.
My little sister lives in NYC, so when I visit her this spring I'll be
sure to take some pics and post them up for everyone.

Can you give us a little more info on your John Archibald and wife. I
have a lot of John Chumley's in my data base as just John and in a few
instances with dates.
Could you tell us who he belonged to etc.
