Hello,
I recently used with ENORMOUS success a genealogy research company called
Bibliofox - their site is www.bibliofox.co.uk (if I have it off, do a google
search on the name), in order to look up a different part of my family who was
from the East End of London.
They came up with more than I could envision, based on much less information
than you have. I know this sounds like I'm plugging them, but they are
brilliant; I still use them for research, and compared to many US based genealogists,
their rates are sginificantly less expensive. I recommend them completely for
this or any U.K. based family research.
Good Luck!
M.C. Michel
Hello this is my first post on this mailing list.
My name is Katherine Mallett, I am trying to research some family history...
I am afraid my knowledge of geneology shorthand may well be imparing my
search, so here is the query (in normal language) ;)
My fathers family originate largely from the south east (some north-east) of
England (UK). I am researching in particular my great-grandfather's
ancestry. His name was John Robert Cholmeley (although I have also seen it
spelt Cholmondeley in a few family documents), born 1896 in Woodford Essex.
His parents were John R Cholmeley (born 1850 in Bethnel Green London) and
Sarah A (?) (born 1848 in Chesham Buckinghamshire). To my knowledge there
were two younger brothers Edward and William (born somewhere in the London
Borough of Hackney after 1901). All this information I am getting from the
1901 online census records. I am planning to check the marriage register at
Buckinghamshire County Council for 1860 onwards in an attempt to discover
the maiden name of Sarah A (Cholmeley), am I correct to assume that late
C19th tradition would have the bride married in her locale as opposed to the
grooms? John Robert Cholmeley (the younger one born 1896) went on to marry
Violet Ford and had two children Joan and Doris Cholmeley. Joan is my
grandmother.
Anybody with any possible links or suggestions of further online resources I
could use to investigate this would be most appreciated.
Many thanks
Katherine

I have finished thirteen years of research into the family of John Chumley who settled in Spartanburg Cnty., SC, sometime around the Rev. War. My book will be available for purchase next week. The book includes some of the following:
1. The Family of John Chumley
2. Many Descendants of William Chumley--This William settled in North Georgia between 1820-1830. (Some of his descendants removed to various parts of Texas. This is NOT the John Chumley who was in the Rev. War.)
3. Information about the O'Shields/Osheal family who settled in Spartanburg Cnty.
The book has over 300 pages, illustrations, and a few photographs.
If interested, please send $50.00 + 5.00 postage.

Andy, in the KY Death Index 1911-1986 I found this info:
"Charles A. Chumbley (lived in Indiana) KY death certificate 19524, Deathvolume 69."
I'd like to see someone else's name besides mine on this board. Am I too late in starting or what?
No, you're not too late. It seems like people are way too busy these days.
Years ago the Board was very active. Hopefully, some of the "old timer's"
can get involved again. Time marches on.
What seemed to stop most of the traffic was the fact that no one could get
any information on Robert and Betsy. It seems like they started this whole
thing rolling?
Talk to you soon, Andy
P.S. I see that my e-mail address is still wrong. Can anyone steer me in the
right direction? I've contacted Rootsweb twice with no luck. The new address
is: andychum(a)comcast.net. Thanks.

Dear Alice,
Eva is my 90 year old aunt I will see later today (I am travelling home today
to Illinois). I’ll find out from her who the others are. I do know that
“Della” is my Dad’s first cousin, daughter of Rhoda Jane (sp?), daughter of Lee
Ander. She is still alive. I talked to her last week.
Thanks so much for the info. I’ll have to get a copy of the scrapbook.

Kenny, some of these would be your great-aunts and great-uncles, but your father Evestus is not included.
I would like to add something to deepen the James F. Chumley mystery. My grandfather was also named James Farris Chumley, b. 1890 in Dawson Cnty., GA.
I have no idea where the name Farris comes from. No one seems to know. I am priting a book next week which will include the descendants of William Chumley of Dawson Cnty., GA. It will also have a brief history of the Chumleys from Spartanburg,SC.(John Chumley 1740-1750 and his family)
If anyone is interested, please email me. I will have the books ready around the end of July. conniechumley(a)hotmail.com

Mary,
My Chumbleys were from the Russell/Pulaski counties - Andrew Chumbley &
several of his sons [William, James F., Elias Brittain, Samuel, Leander, and
Lewis W.] settled on the Cub Creek, which empties into the Cumberland River
(now Lake Cumberland). I was there just last week (I grew up in Russell
Co - now live in Bluffton, Ohio).
Was your Britton the son of Andrew? If so, born about 1838 in Tennessee &
served in the 1st KY Cavalry? 1850 Pulaski census lists him as a farmer.
Children were Alexander (b. about 1838) and Andrew (b. about 1840), James
a. 1842, and Malinda, a. 1844.
Gets confusing - Brittain, Britton, Elias Briton, etc. I've seen several
ways to spell it too. I have a lot of footwork to do.

Alice: My line is also from Robert, Brittain, Lewis Chumbley of Pulaski and
Russell Co., KY. My Brittain m. Margaret Russell, their son Lewis (1848) m.
Elizabeth Gossett, their daughter Martha Chumbley m. John Thomas Spears. My
Lewis also named one son 'George Brittain'...so that name goes down the
line.
I lost track of Brittain of 1815...he was in the 1850 census of Pulaski CO.
Have not been able to find where he or Margaret are buried.
I checked cemetery book for Russell Co.,compiled by Irma Miller Shepherd
1998, and could not find a James F. Chumbley there..I have some Pulaski
books and will search through them. One thought...you might want to check
Adair Co, KY...I think it borders Russell & Casey Co....I haven't had the
chance to get to, myself... it's a stretch...but I've ran into a brick
wall....so good luck to you. Keep an eye out for my Brittain too...thanks
in advance.
I've had tremendous help from this site, via several members..but Arva
Chumbley of Texas and Glenda have really put me on the right track at
times..Arva had researched for years.

Somerset, Ky., Friday, February 6, 1920.
Harrodsburg. Misses Fannie, Sallie and Ruby Chumley, daughters of W.T.
Chumley, of this county, have instituted suit against the Cincinnati
Southern
railroad. The young ladies range in age from eighteen to twenty-three
years,
and on June 8, 1919, went to Cincinnati on a Sunday excursion. The coaches
were crowded and they were forced to use a wet seat, and the coloring matter
on the cushion faded off on their white dresses and they were compelled to
wear these stained clothing all day in Cincinnati and thereby much
humiliated.
Thanks for the reponse. I am in touch with Kenny, too.
Are you related to Lewis W. Chumley 1865-1960 who married Armenia Cain? I
know where she is buried, but not Lewis W. Do you his burial site?
Alice
I'm not sure - one source had Franklin as the middle name, but I haven't
proven that.
My Chumbleys came from Virginia, Tennessee, then Kentucky. I'm descended
from Robert, Andrew, James F., John Will, William Joshua, Kenneth (Andrew
through Kenneth lived in Russell County, KY).
Lots of Brittons, Britons, Brittains in my branch. One of earliest is
Brittain (Britton) about 1815 in Powell Valley, TN; then to Russell County,
KY - he married a Margaret.
Then there's an Elias Britton (a 1838), son of Andrew. He married Ellen
Nelly Dunsmore in Pulaski Co, KY (adjoins Russell Co) on Nov. 11, 1858.
It gets confusing, but I depend on faint clues and indirections to carry me
on this search.
