I am getting ready to go out ot the country for a couple of weeks, but wanted
to throw in this information. Some of you "old" listers may remember that a
few years ago Bill Chumley, one of us Robert/Betsy descendants, gave me
permission to post his extensive research to this list. I can't be specific,
but it is back in the Archives somewhere. (Go to the main Rootsweb site,
look for this list and its Archives.)
Anyway, I looked quickly and see that one of Bill's files has Asa H. Chumley,
b. 1 Aug 1808, Montgomery Co. VA (date from Hist. of VA, p. 436), d. 1903 in
Pulaski Co. VA. He m. Eliza Hudson, 5 Feb 1838, Montgomery Co.
Another of Bills' files has Asa H. as a son of William Chumley, b. abt 1754,
d. abt 1819, Montgomery Co. He m. Lucy Harper. He has William as a son of
John Chumley, b. abt 1728, d. abt 1781, Amelia Co. VA. He was married to
Martha (?Lockett). John & Martha also had a son Robert who was married to
Fanny Sadler.
Have fun!

Dear Steve,
Yes there is a Asa with a son Robert age 12 b. Virginia, but this Robert
would have been b. 1848.
Robert Chumbley m. Betsy Ford was b. 1786 in Va. and d. 1853 in Mo.
This is not the Robert Chumbley /Betsy Ford family. They were long gone
from Va., and dead in the 1860 cen. and long after Robert and Bestsy had
there last child in Claib. Co, TN.

Dear Steve,
Are you saying that Robert Chumbley b. 1786 m. Elizabeth Ford, is a son
of Asa Chumley and Eliza Chumley of Pulaski Co., Va.?
If this is so I sure would love to see your proof, and so would a lot of
other researchers of this couple.
Our Robert Chumbley /Betsy Ford, has not been proven yet to be a son of
any of these early Va. families. There is some speculation and guessing
but as yet as far as I know there is no proof.
There is a lot of material on the Chumbley/Chumley/Chumney families that
is still not on Eddies web page.

Thanks for the web site. I do not have that one. I agree with you that we are related to Cholmondeley. Did you know that a Cholmondeley was Knighted in 1822 and received the Order of the Garter Star? There is a lot of interesting information about our family. My family came out of Virginia and then migrated to Kentucky and Tennessee. I hope to hear from you again. This is fun.

Hello Steve,
I'm Steve "Chumley", I almost feel that my name is not unique anymore!
I'm not sure if anyone has given you this link:
http://www.hebroots.com/chumney.html, but it has a ton of information on
the Chumney, Chumley, and Chumbley line. I hope this helps. Also, I
understand that all Chum*ey's relate back to the surname of Cholmondeley
back in England (correct me if I'm wrong). This list has been a little
quiet lately, so it's good get the blood flowing again. I'm a descendent
of the Chumley's that made it into East Texas in the early 1800's. My
father, Ronald Chumley (in East Texas) has a bunch of information on the
Chumleys that first came to East Texas. My hope is to get as much of
this information online in the near future. Another good resource on the
Chumleys (especially in Virginia and Texas) is Shelia Chumley
(shc4gen(a)shreve.net). She's on this list as well.
Happy Hunting!

Dear Tammy,
The last little bit of info makes more since now.
Elias Brittian Chumbley married Ellen Nellie Dunsmore 11 Nov. 1854 in
Pulaski Co., Ky, they had a son William Thomas Chumbley.
Elias Brittian Chumbley was a son of Andrew Chumbley and Elizabeth
"Betsy" Cadle, they were married in Russell Co., Ky, and had nine
children. Andrew was married a second time to Mary Jane Goodin, who had
been married to J. McCleanden. Andrew and Mary Jane had about three
known children. Andrew Chumbley can be found in the 1830 and 1840 cen
of Claiborne Co., TN, in the 1850 and 1870 cen he was in Pulaski Co.,
Ky, and from the 1880 cen through his death he was in Russell Co., KY.
Andrew Chumbley was the oldest know son of Robert Chumbley and Elizabeth
Ford. This Robert Chumbley was b. according to records in VA, and we
are still looking for his proven parentage. This couple had nine
children, with some of them remaining in Claiborne Co., TN, and with
some removing to Ky, and others going to Mo.
And you are correct, part of this family lines spelled the name both
with and without the b.
Sincerely,

I have reason to believe that I am. I have done a lot of research on my family came up with Asa. He also had several sons. Two of them, William and George served with Asa in the Civil War. This web site is a good resouce. http://www.hebroots.com/marrcens.html Look at the 1860 U.S. Census information for Virginia. That will give some good information. If you like, I can send some of the information I have found. Good luck
