Dear Tammy Bernard,The ad you place states you are looking for information about Mahala Chumbley or Susie Bernard.Susie was my Aunt and Mahala was my grandmother.Call me and I will give you all the information. 770-786-8713. Take Care,Randy
Steve,
I'd be interested in identifying your g-grandfather Lewis. My records show
two Lewis Chumbleys (in addition to myself).
The first is Lewis Milton Chumbley, who was born 8-July-1879 to Alexander
Chumbley and Serelda Rainwater. I don't have a birth location, but my
g-grandfather, James Marion Chumbley, was born in 1872 in Pulaski County,
Ky. I show Lewis Milton married to Lanny Cowan.
The second is Lewis Chumbley (I don't have his middle name) was born in 1848
to Brittian Chumbley and Margaret Russell. Again, I don't have a birth
location, but the family lived in the area around Pulaski county KY at the
time. My g-g-grandfather Alexander Chumbley was this Lewis' brother.
Do you have your g-grandfather's parents or grandparents?

Nell,
The reason I am caught up in Chumley/Chumney/Chumbley's I have located
Chumley's in Obion County, Tn. Asa H. Chumley's brother, Claiborne's son,
Asa "Acey" T. marries a Flora Penneybaker woman in Obion county, Tn in 1876.
I expect this Flora Penneybaker woman to be related to Mary Francis
Pennebaker also in Obion County at the same time. I have had a nightmare
finding parents or ex-husband for her. The Edwin R. Pennebaker line says
she does not belong to them, but I am not so sure. Please let me know if
you find anything on any spelling of Pennebaker in the Chumley line.
Thanks for you offer to look-up,
Nancy

Steve,
I do most of my research via the web, not always documented. This is what I
can add to your questions. You appear to be searching for George W.
Chumley, but I believe he is actually George Hudson Chumley. Perhaps some
of the siblings information will help you fin d more detail on him.
Descendants of ASA H. CHUMLEY
1. ASA H.3 CHUMLEY (WILLIAM ALLEN2, JONATHAN1) was born August 22, 1808 in
MONTGOMERY COUNTY, VA, and died September 10, 1903. He married ELIZA
HUDSON, daughter of ISAAC HUDSON. She was born April 30, 1808 in AUGUSTA
CO, VIRGINIA, and died April 13, 1890.
Notes for ASA H. CHUMLEY: He was a captain of the VA state militia
HICKMAN CEMETERY PULASKI COUNTY, VA Located: On Hickman Cemetery Rd.
Children of ASA CHUMLEY and ELIZA HUDSON are:
i. GEORGE HUDSON4 CHUMBLEY, b. 1839.
Notes for GEORGE HUDSON CHUMBLEY: Fourth Virginia Infantry George was
wounded at Chancellorsville
ii. WILLIAM ALLEN CHUMBLEY, b. October 22, 1841; d. January 22,
1917; m. MARY C. HICKMAN; b. August 29, 2846; d. April 29, 1917.
Notes for WILLIAM ALLEN CHUMBLEY: Fourth Virginia Infantry; William was
wounded at Mine Run
iii. JOSEPH HARPER CHUMBLEY, b. November 7, 1844, PULASKI COUNTY,
VIRGINIA; m. ELLA H. SHELL, January 16, 1867, MONTGOMERY COUNTY, VA.
Notes for JOSEPH HARPER CHUMBLEY: He died in 1917. He married Ellen Hannah
Shell who was born in 1848 in Montgomery County, VA. Joseph H. Chumbley was
a courier on General Longstreet's staff and later on Robert E. Lee's staff.
He was a Presbyterian & a Mason.
JOSEPH H. CHUMBLEY - Leading merchant at New River Bridge, largely
interested in church and school work; and identified with all the best
interests of Pulaski county, was born in this county November 7, 1844. Asa
H. CHUMBLEY, his father, was born in this county in 1808, and his
grandfather, William CHUMBLEY, settled here in the first years of the
present century, coming from Amelia county, Virginia, and his mother, Eliza
(HUDSON) CHUMBLEY, born in 1808, came from Augusta county about 1830. In
Montgomery county, Virginia, January 16, 1867, Joseph H. CHUMBLEY and Ella
H. SHELL were united in marriage, and to them have been born three children:
Eula, February 16, 1869; Anna L., May 2, 1871; Robert E. Lee, February 27,
1879. The wife of Mr. CHUMBLEY was born in Montgomery county, June 22,
1846, daughter of William P. and Eliza J. SHELL, born in Montgomery county
in 1825. George H. and William A. CHUMBLEY, brothers of Joseph H. were both
soldiers of the Fourth Virginia Infantry in the war between the states.
George was wounded at Chancellorsville, and William at Mine Run. Joseph H.
CHUMBLEY served in the Ninth Virginia Battalion of Cavalry, who had the
honor of being General Lee's body guard and escort, and were participants in
the battles of Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, and many subsequent
engagements. Mr. CHUMBLEY is now serving as a notary public in Pulaski
county, and has been four years magistrate. His address is New River P.O.,
Pulaski county, Virginia.
Now for the reason I am caught up in Chumley/Chumney/Chumbleys I have
located Chumleys in Obion County, Tn. Asa H. Chumleys brother, Claiborne
s son, Asa Acey T. marries a Flora Penneybaker woman in Obion county, Tn
in 1876. I expect this Flora Penneybaker woman to be related to Mary
Francis Pennebaker also in Obion County at the same time. I have had a
nightmare finding parents or ex-husband for her. The Edwin R. Pennebaker
line says she does not belong to them, but I am not so sure. Please let
me know if you find anything on any spelling of Pennebaker in the Chumley
line.
Thnks,
Nancy

My father is the grandson of Lewis Chumbley. He was supposed to have been named after him. However, the hospital mispelled his name on the birth certificate. So, his name is William LOUIS Chumbley. And, I am just as guilty when it come to "originality." My son is William Louis Chumbley the 2nd.

This is to all the Chumbleys following this thread. Lewis seems to have
become the traditional name for Chumbleys. In my own lineage (of which I have
knowledge), I had a great-great uncle named Lewis, my grandfather was named Lewis,
he named his youngest son Lewis, my middle name is Lewis, as in the middle
name of my younger son, I have a first cousin whose middle name is Lewis, and a
nephew whose middle name is Lewis. These all are Chumbley’s.
It doesn’t seen our branch of the family showed a whole lot of originality in
naming the boys.

We are talking about two different "Asa's." The one I am talking about, the father of George, was listed as 61 years old in the 1870 Virginia Census.
Your "Asa" is probably the son of Campbell. He was only 14 in the 1860 VA Census and is not listed in the 1870 census.
But, thanks for this information. It is really interesting.
Glenda Mounger <rmjosh(a)flash.net> wrote:
I know more about Asa than George, and I don't know where I got the info.
Asa M. b. ca 1846 Va. appears in the 1840 cen of Pulaski Co., KY living

25 Nov. 1863. He Enlisted Pvt, age 17, Pulaski Co., Va. Co., F. 54

I do not have anything else at this time on this family, sorry. Please
let me know where there parentage lies when you find out. My part of
the Chumbley family has not connected to this parts of the family yet.
I also des. from some Lewis Chumley, my part of the family was of the
Robert b. ca 1786 and Elizabeth Ford Chumbley line that came to Claib.
Co., TN in the early 1800. Yes Robert according to cen records was born
in Va. I desc. through there son Lewis b. ca. 1806, his son Daniel Huff
Chumley, and than his son James Franklin Chumley b. May 1856, and yes
this family did come to Texas, and settled in Plano, Collin Co. A lot
of the families of Texas desc. from this couple. The other Chumbley
family of Texas are kin through Brittian Chumbley who was a son of
Robert and Elizabeth Ford also. This family that came to Texas in the
Grayson Co., area and desc. from his son Alexander Chumbley and Seralda
Rainwater, and yes they mig. from Kentucky Pulaski Co..
There is yet another Chumbley family that came to Texas much earlier and
they came from the Virginia families, but they settled in the Houston,
and San Antonio, Texas.
Still trying to find the answer to the mystery of our Robert Chumbley
and Elizabeth Ford. Maybe one day. Of course we will all be surprised.
Nice to know what part of the name mig. to Indiana and other parts up
north. I was wondering who I was finding on the cen records.

I will keep trying to look at the Soldiers and Sailors System, but it have been down for a couple of days.
I am hoping that I can look at the unit and the roster to see if there are other Chumbley men in the same unit. Sometime you can find more that way.
I need to know where the 54th was mustered out of before I could know who he might be.
