Tammy, what I have Is that they were listed in the 1850 Pulaski County KY census, he as a farmer; their marriage is listed in the Marriage Bond Index for Pulaski Co. 1799--?, Book 1, pg. 391. [Marriage was Nov. 11, 1858]. Also Elias B. was with the KY 1st Cavalry, Co. F, Union. He applied for a War Pension (I think Jan 31, 1912); the application number is 979.620, the beneficiary was to be Anna J. Coply (not sure of her). If you'd write for the Civil War Pension records, you might learn a lot. I'm descended through Elias's brother James Franklin Chumbley m. Lucy Ellen Fry -- Russell Co. If you want to write me directly my email is ralora(a)earthlink.net.

I am researching the line of Elias B Chumbley and wife Nellie Ellen Dunsmore. Their daughter Mahala that married Marcus Green Luttrell is my great great grandma. I have her death marriage certificate as well as a welfare application. I also have a picture of her with a sister. This was a large family. I would just love to know something personal about these people. I descend through her daughter Susie Bell Luttrell that married James Henry Bernard. Susie Bell was 30 years younger than her husband when they married. It was his 3rd marriage. Mammy Sue said that James never courted her and just asked her father to marry her. He had nothing to give and I believe he might have deserted his 2nd wife. Mahala passed away in the 70's. She would chew on a stick to make a tooth brush. I remember her very well but of couse at the time I was not interested in my family history. It is such a shame how so often we do not begin a quest until we have no one to help us. The li!
ttle family stories are the most fun of all.
I would love to talk with relatives of this line.

Alice...thanks for the reply. My Britton would be much older, he was son of
Robert Chumbley and Betsy Ford.....I think this Britton is 'Elias Britton
Chumbley'.
Thanks...and if you would keep an eye open...just in case...maybe someday,
will stumble upon some information.
Mary

Hi folks,
I just wanted to let everybody know that the SPAM problem finally got bad enough for me to do something about it. My new SPAM filter will only pass messages from people on my address list (all of you). So send me some mail! (nothing about loans, prescription drugs, enlargement of selected body parts, etc, please)
If, however, you change e-mail addresses, your message will be "jailed". You can still get the message delivered, but you will be referred to a website to sign-on. Or if you will let me know before you change addresses, I'll make the correction.
Thanks for your patience.

Andy, I'm still working on the photo.
At this point, I strongly believe that this is a portrait of the James Franklin Chumbley/Lucy Ellen Fry Chumbley family. They had six children, four boys and two girls -- there are six men in the back row, which would be the four boys and the spouses of the two girls.
It might be a gathering for Decoration Day [Memorial Day] since James Franklin Chumbley fought with the KY 19th Inf [Union] and was captured on April 8, 1864 at Sabine Cross Roads, LA.
[My left/right descriptions are from OUR perspective.]
I still haven't checked with a photo expert for an explanation of the ?flower sprigs? that several women are wearing on their right shoulder, or of material on James's coat, or of the "flag" that hangs behind and to the left of Dr. Charles Andrew Chumbley.
I believe that James F and Lucy Ellen are front/center; this photo resembles other photos I have of them.
I also believe that the man in the back row, second from left is my great-grandfather John Will Chumbley (son of James Franklin Chumbley) and to his right is his wife Rebecca Frances Hart. Again, I'm trying to match photos.
The back of the original photo that you sent me had some writing on it. Most of these names would be the third-generation (youngest children in the photo); however, there is someting cut off of my copy. It would be on the upper left of your original, if you could check that for me. It's right above "Sisters & Brothers" and may say "John Chumbley," but I don't have enough to be sure.
Having been to the Russell County courthouse this summer, I'm going to scrounge around several Pulaski Co graveyards that are close to the Cub Creek (where Andrew Chumbley, father of James F., owned land). I know that others have done some of this, but I'm doing it too. Besides, I like "being in the area" that they lived. On Monday I'll go to the Pulaski Co. courthouse.
A couple of other tidbits:
Andrew Chumbley received a Kentucky Land Grant of 100 acres on Dec. 9, 1854. This is in Book 43. The land was in Pulaski County along the White Oak Creek. [Andrew's name is spelled CHUMBBLY on the land grant.]
Andrew's son William had received a land grant of 61 acres in the same area as Andrew, but earlier -- On July 28, 1847.
In May of 2004, my husband and I will go to Chester and Shropshire areas of England. Not necessarily to "trace" but to inquire and get a stronger sense of things. One of the most popular writers at the turn of the century was one Mary Cholmondeley. In 1900 her book "Red Pottage" (still available on Amazon.com, and taught in several Victorian women writers classes -- at Yale, for example) was the second best selling novel of the year, often selling over 1500 copies a day.
Guess that's it for now. I sure hope someone responds, as I'm beginning to feel I'm the only Chumbley still prodding. Perhaps you've all succeeded in your own quests. Still, I'm enjoying myself.
