The father of all of the Chumleys in South Carolina that I know of was John
Chumley. He was from Virginia, left a will and his father was a quaker.

Mason Chumbley, born ca. 1800 in South Carolina; died between 1860 and 1870
in Dawson Co., GA. As a resident of Jackson County, GA, he drew Lot Number
295 in the 13th District, Fourth Section of the Cherokee Land Lottery of
1832, published in 1838. His name appears as "Mason Chumbler" in the lottery
records. He may have remained a resident of Jackson County until 1841, as
his daughter Mary married Hugh Whitmore in Jackson County on 27 January of
that year. The license for this marriage had been issued in Hall County but
executed in Jackson County.
Was he the son of THOMPSON CHUMLEY of Spartanburg County, SC, who first
appears in the 1790 census there?
Michael Motes
Is Richard Chumly, Jr., age 45+, in the 1810 Census of Spartanburg District,
SC, the son of Richard Chumley and Grace Milam who married in 1756 in
Virginia? Is Richard Chumly, Jr. in Spartanburg the brother of Thompson,
William and Dolly Chumley, who married (1) Isaac Crow, Jr. and (2) Manly
Ford?
Has anyone considered that THOMPSON CHUMBLEY, in Spartanburg from the 1790
Census until at least 1830, is the THOMAS CHUMBLEY with wife Mary
occasionally referred to in early records?
Michael Motes
I have access to the original WW1 statement of service cards at the museum on
Camp Mabry, Austin. When I get the chance, I'll look up any Chum(b)leys in
the files.

Sharon,
Thanks for posting the information on Homer's twin Helmuth. Either I missed
it or it was not included in the transcription at the DAR Library. Regarding
the twins being born in different places...Since Helmuth was living in Oregon
at the time, saying he was born in Mt. Vernon was a more general location and
could be located on a map. Lawrenceburgh is/was a tiny hamlet northeast of
Mt. Vernon, the county seat. Since Homer was living in Lawrence Co. at the
time, he probably figured everyone knew where Lawrenceburgh was.
Barbara Meger
Hi Listees,
Oops, in my haste, I forgot about the 2nd page of the cards for Homer &
Helmuth.

Sharon
Hi Goodman researchers,
A few months back, Barbara Meger graciously posted several WWI Draft

Sarah Chumbler may be Sarah Chumley. I know of a female Chumley in Forsyth Cnty., GA who married a Youngblood. I believe her father was John Baxter Chumley who was killed during the Civil War at Vicksburg. J. B. Chumley's father was George William Chumley of Spartanburg, SC. I think his father was William Chumley.
Does anyone have any info on a Lee Chumbley and wife Victoria in the 1900
census Russell County, Wolf Creek District. Lee was born July 1861 and
Victoria July 1859. THey had 8 kids 5 alive. Four were listed Lolodia ?
13, Louis 11, Robert 7 and John W 1 all born in KY except John W was born in
Texas.
Thanks
Dear Tammy,
I have not followed the children of Andrew and Elizabeth Cadle Chumbley, much
past the next gen. maybe two at the most.
Even though he is related he is not my direct. But he is the on that went to Ky
and stayed.
I have found in the KY records the following and most of this is your lines ss
death index.
You did not say that Marcus was older than Mahala, but according to the cen he
was 37 in 1910, a little more than 10 years her sr.
I found a Earnest Luttrell 27 May 1910-22 Jan 2001 Russell Springs, Russell
Co., Ky
Susie Bernard 14 Feb 1904 - Feb 1977 Harrodsburg, Mercer, Ky (Yours)
James Barnard 3 June 1891- Aug 1967 zip 42739 (no other records listed)
Mahala Luttrell 22 June 1882 d. 15 Oct 1973 Windsor, Casey Ky.
I am willing to bet that you Mahala is a granddaughter of the Andrew and Betsy
Cadle Chumbley family lines.
I would suggest that you post what you know from her death record, and see if
anyone knows who your Elisha and Nelle Poston Chumbley might belong to.
Also ck on Nelle Poston. If you cannot on in the front door try the back.
Have you ck the webpages on rootsweb to see if anyone has a posting for your
Elisha Chumbley?
Sincerely,
Glenda Bales Mounger

I have a copy of Mahala's Death Cert and it lists her parents as Elisha
Chumbly and Nellie Posten. She was born June 28, 1882 Casey County and
passed away Oct 25, 1973. She is buried in Bowmer Cemetary along with other

To List: Although this isn't one of my Chumbley's ( at least no link
yet), while searching for my husbands family in the Spring Grove
Cemetery, Cincinnati, Hamilton Co., OH....I happened to find a monument
of a Armstrong Chumley Apr 9, 1822-Aug. 18, 1880; with his wife Mary A.,
Feb 2, 1827-10/26/1901. I did snap a picture, but it's not real
clear....if anyone would like it, I can forward.
I haven't been back to the cemetery to check the microfiche record on
this Chumley. Found it by accident. Maybe Armstrong Chumley connects
to someone on the list.
Mary Held
Dear List,
As you see from my posting they have changed the spelling since I first
found the record.
There is another marriage of a A. J. Chumbley m Martha Ann Merritt in
1893 and John T. Chumbley to a Polly J. Luttrell in 1893, Casey Co., Ky.
There are a number of death records of Chumbley also in Casey Co., Ky.
Hope this might help.
Sincerely,
Glenda Bales Mounger
Marriage of Mahala Jane Chumbley and Marcus Green Litterell.
27 May 1899 Casey Co., Kentucky. Kentucky Marriages.
Her name was spelled with a b., and his was spelled like I typed it in.
It was through Ancestory.com, not rootsweb.com sorry.

> Dear Tammy and List,

I found a marriage record for this couple on roots web some time ago.
Even though I cannot place Mahala, I did more are less think that she
was of the Andrew and Elizabeth Cadle Chumbley lines some where down the
line, as this couple was the one that went to Kentucky.
Andrew and Elizabeth Chumbley had a daughter Mahala but she was b. in
1831 and married John Chaney.
I am sure that this Mahala that married the Marcus Green Litterell is of
this family lines, but do not know exactly where.
If she did not die until 1973, there should be a death record for her,
it just might tell who her parents were.
Sincerely,
Glenda Bales Mounger

>> You can use CAPS or lowercase, it doesn't matter.
>>
>> * To post a message (query, reply or other CHUMBLEY ++++ data) to the
>list, send it to
>> CHUMBLEY-L(a)rootsweb.com
>> It helps to remember to put something in the "subject line".
>>
>>
>> * Accuracy is important and sources are vital. Ancestor lists are
>worthless if the information is wrong.
>> * All information need not be accompanied by source citations, but I
do
>recommend strongly that posts either include sources or a note stating
that
>they are available on request.
>> * If information is speculation then label it as such until it is
proven
>or commonly accepted as fact.
>> * When posting your query try to give as much information as you
know,
>i.e. dates and places of all vital events if known, along with enough
other
>family members so that the reader can positively identify if they are
>researching the same family. "Anyone out there researching CHUMBLEYs?"
just
>doesn't cut it.
>> * When replying to the list (this also can apply to private replies)
try
>to quote some portions of the previous message so that other readers
are
>reminded what the "thread" is about. Make it clear what is quoted
material
>and what you are adding. Most mail readers take care of this for you by
>inserting greater-than signs ">" at the beginning of each quoted line
or
>possibly double brackets "<<" before and ">>" after the quoted piece.
Use
>standard Windows procedures to "cut" unnecessary material.
>> * Post your query frequently, perhaps once a month, if you have not
yet
>found your ancestor. New people are joining the list all the time and
they
>may have the info you need.
>> * Please send CHUMBLEY replies to the list, not just to the original
>poster. Other members may benefit from the data that you provide.

>> You are currently subscribed in "digest mode", which means that
several
>postings made to CHUMBLEY will be consolidated together and sent to you

you
>receive every message as a separate e-mail) are given below.
>>
>> 1. How to unsubscribe. Send a message to
>>
>> CHUMBLEY-D-request(a)rootsweb.com
>>
>> that contains (in the body of the message) the command
>>
>> unsubscribe
>>
>> and no additional text.
>>
>> 2. How to subscribe. Whatever you just did worked, or you'd
>> not be getting this message. But for future reference (for instance,
>> if your subscription is cancelled for whatever reason and you
>> want to resubscribe), just send the command "subscribe" to
>> CHUMBLEY-D-request(a)rootsweb.com.
>>
>> 3. How to change to mail mode (each posting is sent to you as a
>> separate e-mail). There are two steps. First, send the command
>> "unsubscribe" to CHUMBLEY-D-request(a)rootsweb.com to discontinue
digest
>> mode. Second, send the command "subscribe" to
>> CHUMBLEY-L-request(a)rootsweb.com to start receiving individual
messages.
>>
>> 4. How to change to NOMAIL mode. There is no formal NOMAIL mode.
>> All you have to do is follow the directions above and unsubscribe
>> when you want the messages to stop, and then when you want them
>> to start again, simply subscribe again.
>>
>> 5. If you'd like to post a message so everyone on the mailing
>> list receives it, just send it to CHUMBLEY-L(a)rootsweb.com. It
>> will then be sent on to everyone in both mail and digest mode.
>> You don't need to send it explicitly to both.
>>
>> For your verification, a transcript of the original subscription
