Distant cousins,
My name is Stephen Chumley. I'm 26 years old, and currently reside in
Austin, Texas. I grew up in East Texas, and am a direct descendent of
the Chumleys that settled in East Texas in the early 1800's. Armstead,
son of John Chumley, was my great-great-great grandfather. My
grandfather, Onard Chumley, passed away in 1997 at the ripe age of 80.
My father, Ronald Chumley, still resides in East Texas, about 30 miles
from San Augustine. Over the years, he has done some pretty extensive
research on the Chumleys that settled in East Texas. I'll see if I can
get him to join this list and share his information. As well, I'd love
to be pointed to any documents on the web that could enlighten me on the
Chumleys in Virginia in the 1700-1800s.
Best Regards,
Stephen Chumley

Dear Ella, To my knowledge the two Chumbley men you are seeking are
not my
direct line. However in 1977 I received information about them from one
of
their descendents living in San Augustine, Texas. She seemed to think
that
most of the Chumbleys settled first in Virginia. Apparentlly two
brothers,
Armstead and John came to Texas about 1824. John was listed in the
1850 or
1860 census as being 75 years old, and was born in Amelia County,
Virginia.
His wife, Delilah Russell was listed as 60 years old and was born in
North
Carolina. They were in what is now San Augustine Co. TX. on Feb. 11,
1835.
Their children were:
Hannah b 1818 Arkansas
Tom b 1824 Texas m Nancy Willingham
Gardner b 1826 Texas m Lucinda Bullock
Alex b 1827 Texas (killed in a gun battle in San Augustine) Drewry b
1832 Texas m Martha Jane Hale
Armps ? or Irions ? Hannah's child a bachelor
Early Records of Nacogdoches, TX p.15 Tax Roll 1845 Nacogdoches
shows
Chumley, Armsted
1852 Land Claims Gonzales District 177 acres Cal & Gonza E
Bank of
the San Marcus Caldwell (Gonzales and
Bastrop)
San Augustine Chumley, John 1172 a San Augustine 3 m NE of San
Augustine
I was sent 5 typed pages of the children and grandchildren of these
people
which I will be glad to share with you IF you really want them. I am
a
slow typist so I won't send them unless you really want them.
Good
luck,
Marjorie
