If any of you are on the John Chumley line from VA-San Augustine Co. TX and
have not had John e-mail you the photos of tombstones and the newspaper
article with photo, it is fantastic. He did a superb job of photographing
the tombstones and the graveyard.
Thanks again John.
I am searching for ancestors and/or siblings of JOHN CHUMLEA, b. 29 Feb 1781
VA, d. 31 May, 1861 Fountain Co., IN; m. Margaret SHIPE, b. 29 May 1785, d.
24 June 1866 Fountain Co., IN. I don't know where they met or were married.
Margaret was the daughter of Peter SHIPE and Elizabeth WALKER (Welker).
There is a TN Historical Marker (in Knox Co., TN) which states, "PETER SHIPE
Born in 1738, he lived near Natural Bridge, VA, until enlisting in the
Revolutionary Army. He served later as baggagemaster for Gen. George
Washington. Following his service, he came here and occupied the grant made
to him. He died in 1823 and is buried on the land he once owned." John and
Margaret CHUMLEA had 10 children born between 1802 and 1824 in Knox Co., TN
(probably). They moved to Fountain Co, IN, with some of these children
prior to 1840, probably around 1836. If anyone can shed any light on the
parents and/or siblings of John (b. 1781), it will be greatly appreciated.

Hello, my name is John T. Chumney III. I have many gaps in tracing back my
family. The story as told by my father is that our Chumney family lived in
Maury county in Tennessee (very close to Spring Hill). One day a terrible
tornado demolished their home and the only person to survive was a baby which
had been placed in the chimney. His name was Tom Chumney and was took in by
some Robinson's. The spelling of the name may have been Chumbley at the time
because it was later changed to Chumney by Jerome Chumney. My grandfather
John Thomas Chumney was born in Maury county Tennessee on June 10, 1899 and
he had a brother Sam Oliver Chumney born on May 11, 1887. John and Sam
married sisters from Maury county. John married Birdie Jane Johnson (my
grandmother) on January 8, 1918 in Columbia Tennessee. Sam married Callie
Zuliene Johnson on August 27, 1911 in Columbia Tennessee. My father
believes that his grandmother was a Robinson. If you can shed any
additional information I would appreciate it. Thanks

Do you know if he was related to Thompson Chumbley who was in the
Spartanburg, SC area a little later?
I am seeking the parents of Mason Chumbley, born SC ca. 1800, died Dawson
Co., GA between 1860-1870. He resided for a brief period in Jackson Co., GA
and is thought to have been the son of Thompson Chumbley mentioned above.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
