Subject: Mason Chumbley/Chumley
Was Mason Chumley, born SC about 1800 and listed in the 1832 Cherokee
Land
Lottery of Georgia as Mason Chumbler and a resident of Jackson Co., GA,
the
son of Thompson Chumley, who purchased land in Pendleton District, SC,
in
1799?
Mason Chumley settled in Dawson Co., GA and appears to have died there
between 1860 and 1870. His wife is believed to have been Mary (Polly)
Mullinax. Among his children were a son Thompson Chumley and a daughter
Mary
Chumley who married in 1841, Hugh Whitmore. Their marriage license was
granted in Hall Co., GA, but executed in Jackson Co., GA.
Is the ancestry of Thompson Chumley of Pendleton District, SC, known?
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

My name is John Chumney and I live in Versailles KY. I know that the only known facts about my Chumney family is that they lived in Elizabethton Tenn (close to NC) and then migrated to middle Tenn (Maury County). The are many gaps that I do not know about.
Samantha,
I have researched the North Carolina Chumneys/Chumleys for a couple of
years. According to the 1850 Henry County, Alabama census, my
GGGGrandfather, John A. Chumney was born in North Carolina in 1793. I
suspect my gggf's parents were John Chumney and Elizabeth Andrews who
were married in Rowan County, North Carolina on December 13, 1787, but I
have not been able to find a concrete link tying my gggf to this couple.
I've inserted below everything that I've uncovered so far. Hopefully,
together we can work fill in a missing piece of the puzzle for one or
both families.
Coincidentally or not, my GGGGrandfather named his third son, William T.
Chumney. The other sons were:
++ Robert H. Chumney
++ James Claybourne Chumney (my GGGrandfather)
++ Richard E. Chumney
++ John Tyler Chumney
Jim Chumney
Phoenix, AZ
===========================================
Per the book "Rowan Co., North Carolina Marriage Bonds," John CHUMNEY
married Elizabeth Andrews on December 13, 1787. Joseph Andrews (x) was
the bondsman, and L.S. McEwen was the witness. The microfilm of the
original marriage certificate clearly has December 13, 1787 (FHC
Microfilm 500951). It appears John Chumney could sign his name, but
witness Joseph Andrews (Elizabeth's brother) could not.
===========================================
John CHUMLEY is listed as a signer on a 1793-1794 Rowan County, North
Carolina Petition for a separate election (Legislative Papers,
Petitions, Box 3, North Carolina State Archives). The petitioners
living a "great distance" from the "Court house in the town of
Salisbury, and often intercepted by high water courses" were asking for
a separate election in the dwelling house of Andrew Mocks.

John CHUMLY is listed as a tax payer in the book, "Rowan County, North
Carolina Tax Lists" 1757-1800 by Jo White Linn.

In "Some Pioneers from Wilkes Co., North Carolina," regarding James
Gray:
" ... James Gray sold John CHANMEY's Heirs two 50 acre tracts on waters
of Brier Creek (Deed Book G-H, page 75); ..."
The entry in the Wilkes County, North Carolina Court Minutes 1798-1821,
January 1810 session for the above transaction is:
"A deed Jas Gray to Jno CHUMNEY's heirs for 50 acres of land proven by
Mark Merimon." This entry is clearly "CHUMNEY" not "CHANMEY" or
"CHAMNEY."
The preceding land transaction is between James Gray and Joseph Andrews,
Elizabeth Andrews Chumney's brother.
Unfortunately, I was unable to find John's will or probate proceedings
in the Wilkes County, NC court records.
=============================================
In the 1810 US Census for North Carolina, the household of Elizabeth
CHUMLY is listed in Surry County, North Carolina with:
1 white male child under 10
2 white male children between 10 and 16
1 white female child under 10
2 white female children between 16 and 26
1 white female greater than 45
This surely must be Elizabeth, widow of John Chumley (Chumney), because
living nearby are Joseph Andrew and John Andrew. Next door is John
Andrew, Jr. Follow the link below to view the original census records
for the above.
http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/nc/surry/census/1810/0193.gif
NOTE: Surry County was formed from Rowan County in 1770, and Wilkes
County was formed from Surry County in 1777.
=============================================
I have a theory that the Surry County, NC Elizabeth CHUMLY above is also
the Elizabeth CHUMLEY who appears in the 1830 Knox County, Tennessee
census as follows:
Elizabeth Chumley K-322 [00001-000110001]
1 white male 20-30
1 white female 15-20
1 white female 20-30
1 white female 60-70
I surmise she is living with one of her children or grandchildren and
his/her spouse.
Knox County, Tennessee is in eastern Tennessee not to far from Surry
County, NC.
=============================================
I have another theory that the John Chumney who married Elizabeth
Andrews was the same John Chumney who served in the Revolutionary War
from North Carolina per the following.
=============================================
On Eddie Chumney's Chumney/Chumley/Chumbley web site he has the
following on John Chumney and Robert Chumney who were in the
Revolutionary War from North Carolina.
In the Roster of North Carolina Soldiers in the American Revolution on
page 112 and 113, it lists Robt Chumney, Pt. and Jno Chumney, Pt.
enlisted on 27-JUN-1777 and serving for a period of 3 years. Under the
section titled, "Occurrences" Jno was Omtd in June 1778. On page 253, it
lists those who were granted land for their service. John Chumney is
listed as number 982 being a Sergt and was given 428 acres for serving 3
years. The date of warrant is May 21, 1784. He served under James Brown.
John Chumney was a recipient of lands allotted to the officers and
soldiers of the Continental Line, by Law, October 14, 1783.
Follow the link below for Eddie's web site that contains a wealth of
Chumney/Chumley/Chumbley family history information.
http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/2175/chumney.html
=======================================================
During my research, I found another small tidbit on this John
Chumney. The book, "North Carolina Land Grants in Tennessee, 1778-1791"
by Cartwright and Gardiner, includes the following:
William Johnston: III 186, assigned by John Chunney, private per grant
book (sergeant per Military Warrant Book), 428 Acres, 1786 on Red River
in Davison County, Tennessee.
=======================================================
Since the number of acres assigned by this John Chunney, match exactly
those granted to John Chumney and the Warrant book indicates John was a
sergeant, I'm convinced this is the same John Chumney. Too bad, because
I was hoping to determine John's whereabouts after the Revolutionary War
using the location of the land grant.

Shelia, I read your message about John Chumley who you believe lived
in Spartanburg, SC. My Chumley line is researching a Thompson Chumley who
owned land in that county. I also know of a Thomas and a William Chumley
during the same time period. I have several different pieces of information
about Chumleys who were in and out of court there. For example, Mary Chumley
and Betsy Chumley 3-22-1787; a case against John Roebuck and John Chumler
(spelled that way) 12-22-1789; John Chumler had charges brought against him
because a horse drowned 1794; John Chumlie brought bastardy charges against a
Thomas Huckeby 1794; John Grist's WILL proven by John Chumler and Thomas Tod
1794; William Chumley had slander charges brought against him in 1797.
In 1768, a Robert Cholmondeley paid some type of taxes for land in South
Carolina.(I believe the land was in Spartanburg area.) I'll have to go
back and look in the book where I found the information.
Anyhow, I do believe that John, Thomas, William, and Thompson were
related. I'm wondering if the Robert Cholmondeley is also. I am going to SC
this summer for research.
I live in Marietta, GA and am unable to look at your information. If
you or someone else decides to go through what you have and you turn up
something, please contact me. Connie Chumley
