Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
Andy and All,
Hi! I have not been researching much in the past two years. It
seems like my time has been at a premium and while I keep hoping to get
more time it has not come yet.
We are in the second year of the Christian school that I helped
start. It seems there is always more to do. We doubled our size this
year which meant hiring two more teachers and a secretary. Now I am
working on a scholarship committee. We want to make sure that any child
that wants to be at our school is able to be there.
I am still running our Wednesday night children's program. We have
grown quite a bit over the last 4 years. This year my friend who was
helping me run it moved to VA so I have had to keep up with everything.
I am also teaching an adult Sunday School class. For our church
this was a big move. They have never had any women in leadership rolls
outside of the children's or women's ministry areas. Leave it to me to
turn them upside down! LOL
I am still homeschooling both of my boys. They are in 6th and 10th
grades now. It has been a wonderful blessing to see how much they have
grown in the past couple of years. The oldest was called to the Youth
Ministry this summer. He is as active in the church as I am. He is
taking college level classes every chance he gets and is even able to
start getting some college credits.
To throw a wrench into everything we do Michael has been taking
classes on his time off the ship. If we want to see him we go with him.
We spent the whole month of September in Florida and have taken 3 trips
since then. In the last two years he has spent 155 days in school and
that does not include the travel time and personal trips. I find that I
am usually catching up from a trip (although I never seem to quite get
there!) or preparing for the next one.
My newest project is a mission trip for families. We found that the
seniors and youth seem to go on trips like that, but everyone else is
just kind of left out. I have organized a trip for June 2002 that is
economical enough for entire families. We will be working in the
mountains of Kentucky. I am looking forward to it!!
We still have about 65 chickens, but have decided to not get any
more chicks. The goats have all been having twins and are all expecting
now so we expect to get to watch them playing out in the fields soon.
We have been raising great pyranees (big dogs) and they are a lot of
fun. We got rid of the rabbits because it was too hard to keep them
when we were out of town during the winter. Cats, a hamster, and fish
round us out!
I know that I owe some of you e-mails and I am hoping to get to them
over the next two weeks. Right now I have my inbox down to about 400
messages (that is sure better than the 1,000 I usually have), but a lot
of them are ones I want to take some time with.
I hope you all have a wonderful Thanksgiving!!!
Cyndi

Chumbley Cousins--
On a recent visit to the DAR Library in nearby Wash. DC I found a "new" book
on the Lawrence Co., MO shelf: "World War I Draft Registration
Cards--Lawrence County, Missouri", Kansas NSDAR GRC, Series 2, Vol. 134
(2001). Of interest to us:
George Clinton CHUMBLEY, age 30, b. 14 Apr 1887 in Verona, MO; employed
as clerk in Kenady Gro. Co.; married with wife listed as dependent. Tall,
slender build, blue eyes, brown hair. Home addres: 207 W. Tyndall, Aurora,
MO.
Otto Alonzo CHUMBLEY, age 39, b. 15 Mar 1879, self-employed with monument
work; nearest relative--wife, Addie M. Chumbley, Aurora, MO. Medium height &
build, light blue eyes, light brown hair, slightly bald. Home address: 112
W. Myrtle, Aurora, MO.
Victor Artie CHUMBLEY, age 35, 6 Oct 1882; employed as cooper by Wm.
Barron of Republic, Green Co., MO; nearest relative--Vola [sic] Chumbley,
Marionville, MO. Medium height & build, blue eyes, brown hair. Home
address: Marionville, MO.
The above were sons of Samuel Chandler Chumbley & Mary Eliza Goodman. Also
listed are Goodman cousins:
Gustavus Adolphus GOODMAN, age 41, b. 10 May 1877, farmer; nearest
relative--Mrs. Emma Goodman, Hall Town. Medium height & build, brown eyes,
black hair. Home address: R#1 Hall Town, MO.
Homer Adelbert GOODMAN, age 22, b. 23 Jan 1895 in Lawrenceburg, employed
as mechanic helper in garage; married with wife and mother as dependents,
claims exemption because of weak eyes. Tall, stout build, blue eyes, light
hair. Home address: Mt. Vernon, MO.
In this book I found several instances where poor handwriting had caused
misinterpretation of names and a few dates that were off a bit, but otherwise
this is neat information.
I did not recognize this Chumbley; maybe someone will:
Ernest Claude CHUMBLEY, age 38, b. Sept. 15, 1880, self-employed as
grocery merchant; nearest relative - wife, Mrs. Ona Chumbley, Pierce City,
MO. Medium height, slender build, brown eyes & hair. Home address Pierce

To anyone who may be interested:
My name is Chuck Sweedler. I was born Charles Clayton Chumbley on August 13, 1961. My natural father and grandfather shared the same name. I do not know if any preceding generations had the same name.
When I was four years old, my parents separated and subsequently divorced. My mother remarried when I was six, and I was legally adopted by my mother's second husband, Moss Sweedler. I consider him my father in every meaningful sense, inasmuch as he raised me to adulthood purely out of his sense of decency and obligation, even after he and my mother divorced when I was 11 years old. I was raised in Ithaca, NY, where my father was a math professor at Cornell University. After high school, I attended Cornell, graduating in 1983 with a history major. For several years after this, I worked as a bartender in the Washington, DC area. In 1989, I received received a masters in education and began teaching middle school social studies in Montgomery County, MD. After teaching for five years, I entered law school at William & Mary. I graduated in 1997 and since then have practiced as a lawyer in Philadelphia, PA.
I have become curious about my origins. One of the first things I learned about my family when I began searching for information via the Internet is that my grandfather was murdered in Nashville, TN in 1979. Here is a link to the story I found:
http://www.police.nashville.org/get_involved/unsolved/charles_chumbley.htm
Naturally, I was shocked and saddened to learn of this tragedy, and that it happened to somebody so closely related by blood without my learning of it except by chance so many years later.
My parents lived in Nashville before they separated. My mother moved my brother and I back to Boston, where my parents had met when they were in college (she returned to school, where she met her second husband -- who I consider my real father -- who was a grad student at MIT). My natural father, like my grandfather was (and I assume still is) a dentist. I have not seen either my natural father or grandfather in nearly 35 years. Sadly, I no longer have a chance to meet my grandfather, who I am told was devoted to me and my brother.
This long introduction is intended to familiarize you with my particular branch of the Chumbley family. I would also like to ask for any assistance you can offer in my search for my heretofore unexamined past. I have no independent memory of my natural father or grandfather. Whatever you know about my branch of your family would be of great help to me.
Chuck Sweedler
