Eddie,
I do not have the files transcribed but Bill Chumbley and I corresponded and
collected the data from the Maryland Records.
Francis "CROMLEY" aged 16, servant of Henry Adames, 11 Jun 1669/70
CULLIS, Charles. (dec'd) Extx. Barbara CHUMBLY (widow), wife of Francis CHUMBLY.
(Charles Co. Acct. no 9.6 11 May 1685
CULLIS, James mentions eldest daughter, Barbara and youngest dau. Mary, wife
Barbara, extx. Test. Francis CHOMLY (will 4.128 28 Jan 1684)
Bill reports that Francis of CC died at age 32 but offers no source. The last
reference to this family was the above reference of 1684 and tends to support the
theory that they moved across the river into VA.

Where has it been established and how? Francis Chumbley of 1723
lived along the James River in VA. I would be interested in examining the
evidence that you have to support your claims.
John Chumley had an offspring named Frances. It was very common
in those days to name your siblings from family members.

Eddie,
I think it has been established the Francis Chumbley of 1723 was the Francis
Chumbley late of Charles Co MD with wife Barbara.

Cynthia Hi. Hope your doing ok? I've looked at the Census. That Martha
isn't old enough. Mine was born in 1838. Remember in the Macon co. alabama
census 1860 she and husband show up with three children. She states that
she was born in Georgia. eh, I got to look at the Georgia census when ever
I get off these dad gum seven days a week. Thanks very, very much for
helping me. Ross.
ps. I went to Montgomery alabama and found her civil war pension forms.
Wow ! what a thrill to hold papers that she herself held over 120 years
ago. I'm hoping I'll find her in the georgia census. William Summerford
was born in sc. How did they all get to Macon co. alabama by 1860 with
three kids?
I get so much email that I can't remember if I've sent you anything??? Let
me know, ok? Ross.

In the time period that our ancestors came to this country, this is
historically only two main reasons why they came:
#1) On a mission from the King of England
#2) To flee religous persecution
I have been only to track my direct line back to John and Martha
Chumley. John Chumley left a Will in Amelia County, VA in 1780.
At my website located at:
http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/2175/chumney.html
I show that there is a John Chumley who came to VA from England
in 1677. There are Chumley's in VA in the early 1700's. There was a
Frances Chumley who lives along the James River around 1723. There was
a William Chumney/Chumley who lives in VA in 1736. Very probably these
are the descendents of John and Martha Chumley. I have the ship
passenger info John Chumley who came to VA from England in 1677 at my
Website. Perhaps you can take this info and see if there is
corresponding info at the London Public Records office. Please let us
know if you search and find anything.

I would check into the possibiblity that Martha is the Martha who
is the daughter of William Y Chumley/Chumbley who lived in Dekalb Co,
Alabama. They are listed in the 1850 and 1860 Alababa Census. For more
info, see my Website:

Jo,
I know where this family connects also. Once again, Lunenburg
County, VA is the HUGE piece of the puzzle.
William M is in the 1850 and 1860 VA Census. In the 1850, VA Census
his father is Robert B Chumney.
William M had an older sister named Elizabeth and a younger sister
named Lucy. He had younger brothers named Grief, Thomas R and R.B.
The father of William M, Robert B Chumney according to the census
info was born in 1812.
There is STRONG circumstancial evidence that Robert B Chumney is
the son of Robert Chumley and Fanny Sadler. Robert died in 1815 in
Prince Edward County, VA. In the 1820, VA Census, Frances Chumleigh
is listed as living in Prince Edward County, VA and has a one son less
than 10 years of age (this would be Robert B).
Robert Chumley who married Fanny Sadler is the son of John and
Martha Chumley.
So, William Montrevale Chumney born in Lunenburg County, VA would
be the son of Robert B Chumney born in 1812 in Prince Edward County, VA
who is the son of Robert Chumley who married Fanny Sadler in Prince
Edward County, VA in 1796 who is the son of John and Martha Chumley.
It is interesting that William Montrevale Chumney married a Hamlin.
Willis Chumney the son of Robert Chumley and Fanny Sadler married an
Elizabeth Hamblem (Hamlin) in Prince Edward County in 1823. Robert B
Chumney would be a brother to Willis Chumney/Chumley. Seems like the
Chumney's/Chumley's and Hamblin's were still living near each other for
quite a few years.
Thanks for posting this info, Jo. This is another piece of the
puzzle that I didn't have. I will put this new info on my Website also.
Eddie

Cyndi,
The fact that the family came from Pulaski County, VA is a dead
give away of the family connection. He would be a descendent of
William Chumbley who married Lucy Harper. Their descendents lived
in Pulaski County from the early 1800's into the 1900's. I believe
very strongly that William Chumbley/Chumley is the brother of
John Chumbley who married Elizabeth Dickens and my Robert Chumley
who married Fanny Sadler. William was mentioned in the Will as a
son of John and Martha Chumley. For more info, please see the
1850 - 1920 VA Census info that I have at my Website:

to http://unchartedterritory.com/unchar13.html here you will find a
painting (converted to needle point or Cross Stitch) of the Cholmondeley
Ladies (pronounced Chumley) from the 1600's.
Enjoy,
