Dear Family History Friends:
As y'all already know, one of your (former) members and my grandfather, M.
Wayne Montgomery, passed away earlier this month. I just wanted to say thank
you for being part of my grandfather's love of family history. Never a week
went by that he wasn't sharing more tidbits with us about the Montgomery's,
Comley's, Colvin's, etc.
I apologize for having taken so long sending this message to you, but it was
not until this past weekend that AOL finally gave me access to his account so
that I could reply to y'all and let you know why he has not responded to
messages (almost 1000 of them!).
I have included an updated copy of the Modesto Bee article (a portion was
missing from earlier posts), which is relatively accurate. The major
corrections are that death was due to cardiomyopathy (heart failure, in
essence), he had not been in good health for the last few months and had been
under a doctor's care for the condition for several weeks.
Thanks again for being part of grandpa's fun and fact-finding. The
Montgomery Family research will be continued by the remaining family
historian, Roseanne Montgomery (grandpa's sister-in-law). If you wish to
contact her, she can be reached at Gaylemont(a)earthlink.net.
Sadly yours,
Melissa Miller-Henson
P.S. This account will remain open for the next 30 days and will then be
closed.
M. Wayne Montgomery
April 5, 1931 - June 2, 1999
Modesto actor, teacher Wayne Montgomery dies
by Lisa Millegan, Modesto Bee Staff Writer
Wayne Montgomery was always drawn to the spotlight.
When he wasn't teaching at Riverbank High School, he was acting in Modesto
community theater productions or in dramas at his church.
"Wayne was always performing," said friend Devona Degnan. "His life was a
performance."
Mr. Montgomery died abruptly last weekend at his Dry Creek home of an
apparent heart attack. He was 68.
His death came as a shock to his family and friends. He had attended a
barbecue on Saturday and appeared fine, said his brother, Gayle Montgomery,
of Concord.
Modesto police discovered Mr. Montgomery's body Wednesday in his bedroom
after neighbors reported seeing newspapers pile up on his porch.
Over the years, Mr. Montgomery had leading roles in productions at Modesto
and Riverbank Community Theatre.
Mr. Montgomery also was one of the first teachers hired at Riverbank High and
taught drama, English, journalism and speech 28 years before retiring in
1996. Among the honors he received was the California Teachers Association
School Bell Award for Stanislaus County.
"He truly cared about kids and their success," said Riverbank Principal
George Brown. "He was a very gentle man."
Mr. Montgomery was an integral part of the First Baptist Church music
ministry, said Kevin Friesen, the congregations' music pastor. He served as
a member of the church's drama team and performed in most of the church's
major productions.
Mr. Montgomery was born in Cordell, Okla., April 5, 1931, and moved with his
family to California in the 1940s. He graduated from Denair High School,
Modesto Junior College and San Jose State, where he earned a bachelor's
degree in English.
He served four years in the US Air Force during the Korean War.
Before becoming a teacher, he served as executive secretary of the San Jose
Junior Chamber of Commerce, national chapter consultant for the Lambda Chi
Alpha fraternity and vice president of the San Jose Light Opera Company.
He was also executive director of the Kern County Heart Association,
executive manager of the Pittsburg Chamber of commerce and a legislative
assistant in the California Assembly.
Mr. Montgomery was strongly affected by the death of his wife two years ago,
said Gayle Montgomery. But he continued his community work and briefly
returned to teach at Modesto Christian High School.
Wayne Montgomery is survived by his stepchildren Cheryl Miller Moore of
Crescent City, Larry Miller of Delhi and Daniel Miller of Atlanta; and
brothers Gayle and Charles Eugene Montgomery of Tennessee.
A memorial service is scheduled at 1:30 p.m. on Monday, June 7, 1999 at First
Baptist Church of Modesto, 12th and Needham Streets. Colonial Chapel-Franklin
& Downs is in charge of the arrangements.
Remembrances may be made to Medical Ambassadors International, 4048 Tully
Road, Modesto, CA 95356; Riverbank High School Montgomery Scholarship Fund,
6200 Claus Road, Riverbank, CA 95367; or Modesto Performing Arts Association,
P.O. Box 580299, Modesto, CA 95358.
Hi, All! I sent out three letters to the Chumbleys listed in the
Springfield phone book and have had a type of response from each! I was
surprised that so far none of them are descended from Samuel Chumbley
since I know he has descendants that will be buried in Republic (kind of
a suburb)!
One of the letters was returned because the forwarding notice has
expired. I will send it to the new address. It may be a Samuel
Chumbley descendant, who knows!
The first to respond was Kenneth Chumbley who has joined the list
and is a cousin to Grace as well as others of us, but further removed.
Tonight I received a call from the recipient of the third letter!
His father was Winton Chumbley who had a twin brother Wilbur Chumbley.
His father also had a brother Samuel who married ? Clary! His father
and his brothers would have been born in the late 1800s or early 1900s.
He thought that his family had moved to the Indeola, Iowa area about
1865 from Pulaski, Virginia. Does he tie to any of you???? Let me know
and I will put you in touch!
Keep on Plugging!

I am seeking information on John Chumbley, specifically on his forebears.
He was married on April 13, 1783 to Elizabeth Dickens in Prince Edward,
Virginia. Who was his father? Was he from England and if so, where? Is
anything further known about his time in England?
Thank you.
The Rev. Kenneth L. Chumbley
Hi, All! I wanted to let you all know that I got a response from one of
the Chumbley letters that I mailed out. He is not directly related to
Samuel Chumbley, but we connect further back (if I can ever solve these
problems with Robert and Betsy Ford Chumbley!) He just joined the list
and some of you all will be excited to learn of this new cousin! He is
the son of:
Gilbert Hurt Chumbley
son of: John and Gertrude Hurt Chumbley
son of: John and Alice Tibbs Chumbley
I think I got that right! :)

Hi, All! I hope everyone has been doing all right. I have been
busy as usual, but am finally trying to catch up! :) Joan Archibald
came to visit! It was so wonderful to meet another of my cousins! We
took a trip into MO for some research. Unfortunately I only had two
days, but boy did we make the most of them! Some of it I will post to
the Chumbley list, but since so many of you are not related to the
Goodman side I will only post the items that pertain to my Chumbley
research. Anyone who wants the info on our Goodman, Slatton, Lyngar,
etc... connections please send me an e-mail privately and I will post to
each of you. It looks like I have pretty close to 100 pages of records!
One of the highlights of the trip was standing at Sampson Goodman's
grave with Mary Lockhart (who we picked up along the way) who was a
descendant of Harvey Goodman, Joan who was a descendant of Newton Jasper
Goodman, and I am a descendant of Mary Eliza Goodman! We also found the
land Sampson lived on and took pictures. There was a house close to the
border of his land that I will have to research more. It is possible
that Sampson lived in it. If he did not his neighbors in that direction
were related to some of us! We also stumbled across a picture of
Sampson Goodman! If Joan had not been there I would not have found it!
She had heard of the book it was in! I sent off a letter to the writers
today in the hopes of getting a copy!!
The day Joan and I were to separate I finally got a copy of Samuel
Chumbley's COMPLETE Pension file! As I read through it I realized that
he was listed as a Photographer while he lived in Polk County, MO! He
most likely took the picture of Sampson Goodman that we had found!
We also got to meet some older members (94) of the Goodman family
that currently live in Lawrence County, MO. The best part of all was
getting to meet new cousins!!! :)
Talk To You All Soon,
Cyndi

hi,
I'm searching for my great grandmother's parents: Easter J. Chumley and
Robert Rash. I have found their marriage record dated July 31,1872 in San
Augustine, Texas. I know Nancy Elizabeth "Lizzie" Rash was their daughter.
Genie Rash, Frank Rash, Hampton Bell "Hamp" Rash, Abby Rash and William
"Bill" Rash were either full or half siblings to Lizzie. Lizzie Rash married
John Thompson Higginbotham.
I have corresponded with a couple of people who have a record of Easter J.
Chumley married to Richard "Dick" Rash. don't know if she married two
brothers or if there were two Easter J. Chumleys.
Any help would be appreciated.
Shirley
