Here is some more food for thought--
In a book "Loyalists in the Southern Campaign of the Rev. War" by M.
J. Clark in Capt. Thomas Hamlon's Company, Royal North Carolina Regiment, 25
Apr to 24 Jun 1783 was Private EDWARD LYNEGAR.
Then in "Records of the Revolutionary War" by S.T.R. Saffell, on March 24,
1777 EDWARD LINEGAR was sick at Pluckemin (he had changed sides! if it is the
same Edward) and appears to be part of Capt. Anthony Singleton's Company of
Artillery. Then in Col. Charles Harrison's Regt. of Artillery at Morristown
[NJ probably], Mar 10, 1780, EDWARD LENEGAR was furloughed to Virginia.
Sharon, thanks for the census listing. I agree that the Ohio listing must be
1850.

Forgive me, all you listees...
Oh man, when I typed the Census & A.I.S. information it definitely did not
look like this mess on my screen.. Just disregard it, because it is too
hard to figure out. I hate being so dumb about computers. Last night
someone was trying to teach me how to send attachments, but I was afraid to
try it. Bear with me, but I'm definitely going to try it after seeing this
mess!!!

Years ago I also found the same info in the "William and Mary College
Quarterly," Second Series, Vol. 8, No. 2, pg 184.
Over the years I have noted lots of individuals with the surname LINGER,
most of whom appear to have emigrated from England. However thought I'd
throw this into the pile for more "food for thought." I have an
abstraction of an Adams Co., Ohio U. S. Census by Nora Belle Lock [May 17,
1975] which was sent to me by Juanita Martin, but I never took the time to
look up the original records. I'm very confused about the date indicated on
the abstraction. Here is what I received:
U. S. Census of ADAMS Co., OHIO
19 JULY 1815 GREENE T.S. DIST. NO. 5
117-117 LINGER, GEORGE ---- 38 - M - Carpenter - France
MARGARET ---- 25 - F - - Ohio
HENRY ---- 1 - M - - Va.
FULKERSON, MARY ---- 15 - F
- Ohio
The date of 19 July 1815 really trips me up. It MUST be a typo if she is
referring to a U.S. Census, as the 1850 Census was the first US census to
list every name [no relationships] in the household. Also the format is
that of much later censuses. Because of the format, it looks like the
censuses taken between 1850 & 1870. I have found no reference anywhere
that there was any other US censuses taken in Ohio other than the usual
e.g. 1790, 1800, 1810, etc. Does anyone happen to have a copy of Ann
Lainhart's book on State Censuses on hand? Need to check to see if there
was a 1815 STATE census for Ohio. Will try to do so next week when I'm at
the LAFHC. There are printed indexes for Ohio for the 1850 Census [Ronald
Vern Jackson] and the 1860 Census [Lida Flint Harshman] and I'll try to
remember to check them for Lingar/Linger, etc.
Since the spelling of our surnames varied because they were spelled
phonetically [which was influenced by accents], I decided to list the
following info:
Index to the 1810 Census of North Carolina indicates the following:
Linegar, Issac Rch [Richmond] 204
also
Linger, Wm. Rwn [Rowan] 271
Linder, John, Junr. Rck [Rockingham] 210
John, Senr. Rck [Rockingham] 211

Some of the above entries are obviously ours. Difficulty in reading the
handwriting on the old documents may have caused some mispelling by the
abstracters.
I remember viewing an early 1800s will of a woman in Rockingham Co., NC. I
don't think that I printed it out. Her name was spelled very close to the
Lingear [which is ours] on the 1830 Claiborne Co. TN census. I'll see if I
copied the info. I do remember there were no names that rang a bell with
me.
A number of months ago I thought that I would use a couple of those search
engines to locate other Lingar people in the U.S. I was amazed at how many
there are. Couldn't find any E-mail addresses, so maybe sometime when I
have nothing to do [Ha Ha] I'll write to some of them:o)
Sharon
Hello all,
I know that there are list members who have connections to LINGAR/LYNGAR as
well as Chumbley, so I am offering the following for your speculation!
I recently became aware that a FTM marriage CD had an entry for John Lingar.
I went to a more direct source and found the following (of course, there's no
proof that he is "ours"):
Marriages of Norfolk County Virginia, Vol. 2. compl. Elizabeth B. Wingo--
1 Jan 1793. LINGAR, John and Isabella SMALLWOOD.
Sur. Edward ALLMOND.
There has been some discussion regarding the parents of Sarah, John and James
Harvey that Mary/Polly could be a second wife of John Lingar because of his
age, using his War of 1812 papers which indicate he was born about 1776 in
NC. If it is the same John, he would be a bit young (17) to be married if
the 1776 date is accurate. I looked at other records of Norfolk Co. and
found this:
Naturalizations and Declarations of Intention, Norfolk County Circuit Court
(now City of Chesapeake)--
LINGAR, John - France - oath of allegiance 10-22-1793
I can remember that someone has proposed that the name was French. That
could explain why some of the TN marriage records spell the name as Linguar.
Of course this doesn't correspond with the above-mentioned birthplace of NC
if it is the same John Lingar. Maybe he didn't want to record his connection
with France? I didn't find any other reference to Lingar in the Norfolk Co.
books at the DAR Library, but I found Isabella Smallwood's father:
Norfolk County Virginia Will Book II 1772-1788--
SMALLWOOD, CHARLES (Blacksmith) (Norfolk Co.)
2 November 1781 - CODICIL, 25 July 1783 - Pr'd. August Ct. 1783
EX'RS: Thomas RITSON or Norfolk Bor., Edmund ALMOND, of Norfolk County
CODICIL: My Son, JOSEPH SMALLWOOD, to be EX'R. also.
WIFE: ANN (for her life: the Brick dwelling house where I live now & the
Lot belonging to it, divided by stones anow standing; at her disposal & for
the rest of her life, the remainder of my Negroes named: ARMISTEAD, MATT,
ROSE, JIM & in case SARH returns from the Enemy, CESAR & BOB & my horse,
cows, hogs, all kitchen & household furniture & utensils, beds & bedding;
ARMISTEAD's hire due me from MR. THOMAS PLEASANTS & Co. for defraying funeral
charges, laying in winter provisions; the 2 Lots at Ferry Point that I
purchased lately of HENRY HERBERT's Estate & ARGYLL HERBERT's; anything left
after debt are paid & outstanding debts collected, to be divided among my
Wife & Children: JOSEPH, JOHN, ANN & ISABELL.
SON: JOSEPH (after the death of my Wife, the Brick house & Lot to be put in
trust for my eldest Son JOSEPH. Trustees: THOMAS RITSON, EDMUND ALMOND &
Son, JOHN SMALLWOOD, the Title to be made over to JOSEPH or his Heirs or
disposed of for his use whenever said JOSEPH requires it; if my Wife survives
my Son JOSEPH & his Heirs, the property to be sold after my Wife's death &
the money divided between my 2 Daughters: ANN & ISABELL. IN case my Son
JOSEPH & his Heirs are incapacitated by the Law of this State from owning
land & it cannot be sold for his or their benefit, then the sale money to be
divided between my said 2 Daughters; his share of the Negroes when his Mother
dies & the other property is divided)
SON: JOHN (the house lately occupied by MR. EDMUND ALMOND with the Smith's
tools, the lot they now stand upon, bounded by stones to my second Son JOHN;
the lot of land in Newton in Prin. Anne Co.; his share after the death of my
Wife, except the mentioned bequests during her life; a share of the Negroes)
DAUG: ANN SMALLWOOD (1 Negro wench JUDE; the reversions above mentioned;
her share in the division of the Estate after her Mother's death)
DAUG: ISABELL SMALLWOOD (wench SARAH in case she returns or can be brought
home from the enemy; if not, my Negro boy JIM; the reversions above
mentioned; her share after her Mother's death)
WIT: CALEB HERBERT, JAMES HERBERT, EDMUND ALMOND
CODICIL WIT: E. H. MOSELEY, RICHARD CARSON
Norfold County Virginia Tithables had several entries for Charles Smallwood
with listings of the Negroes.
Will Books I & II, Dec. 20 1784-Jul. 1810 indicate that John Smallwood died
before 22 Apr 1799.
Finally, of interest, Norfolk Co. Marriage Bonds--
24 Dec 1781. Edmund ALLMAND and Nancy SMALLWOOD
Could this be the Ann, sister of Isabell(a)? I've often seen Ann and Nancy
used interchangeably; this would differentiate mother and daughter. Since
Edmund Allmand (with various spellings) occurs so prominently in other
Smallwood records, Nancy must be very closely related.
Again, I'll say that while there is no proof that this family is "ours", it
is good for speculation!!!!
